Why Ankeny Garages Keep Asking Us About Both Configurations

We recently worked with a homeowner near NW Greenwood St in Ankeny who had an 11 to 12 foot ceiling, 4-plus inch concrete, and a daily driver under 3 tons that he mainly wanted to maintain himself — oil changes, brake jobs, and exhaust work rather than heavy collision repair. That’s a textbook case for a 2-post clear-floor lift. The open design under the vehicle is exactly what you want for exhaust and driveline access because there’s no crossbar or ramp system blocking your path to the muffler, cat, or driveshaft.

But just a few miles away, we quoted a different Ankeny homeowner who wanted an 8,000 to 9,000 pound 4-post, mobile if possible, in a 3.5 car garage with roughly 4 inch standard concrete and an 11 foot ceiling. He wanted to work on cars and store them — two different goals layered into one residential automotive lift. That combination pushes you toward a 4-post platform even though the 2-post gives cleaner underbody access, because the 4-post lets him park a second vehicle on the deck while still using the garage floor below. The site survey is what separates these two outcomes, not a spec sheet.

2-Post Clear Floor: Best for Pure Exhaust and Driveline Work

A 2-post residential automotive lift, like a BendPak XPR-10S or similar 10,000 lb symmetric unit, gives you completely unobstructed access to the underside of the car. There’s no deck, no ramps, nothing between you and the exhaust system, transmission, or rear differential. If your primary use case is exhaust and driveline access — welding in a new resonator, dropping a driveshaft, swapping u-joints — this is the more efficient layout every time.

The tradeoff is that a 2-post needs adequate anchoring into the slab, which means your concrete thickness and rebar matter a lot. We’ve had leads come in wanting a 2-post on 4 inch standard residential slab with no reinforcement, and depending on the lift’s capacity and anchor pattern, that can be a problem. A 10,000 lb 2-post typically wants a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, sometimes more depending on the model, and installers should be checking that before anything gets ordered. This is also where clear floor design shines for smaller garages — since there’s no wide footprint on the ground, you can walk completely around the vehicle when it’s in the air, which matters when you’re chasing an exhaust leak from bumper to bumper.

4-Post Mobile Platform: Best for Storage Plus Occasional Maintenance

A 4-post residential automotive lift solves a different problem entirely — it’s a parking platform first, a service lift second. If your garage does double duty as storage for a project car, motorcycle, or seasonal vehicle, the deck surface lets you drive a car up onto the platform and leave it there indefinitely while the floor space underneath stays usable. We see this constantly in Iowa garages that are 3 or 3.5 cars wide, where owners want to store one vehicle in the air and still park two more underneath and beside it.

Underbody access on a 4-post is more limited than a 2-post because the ramps and deck rails are in the way, but many 4-post lifts come with a rolling jack bridge or sliding tray for driveline and exhaust work. If exhaust and driveline access is only an occasional need rather than the main event, a 4-post with a jack bridge gets you 80 percent of the utility of a 2-post while adding real storage capacity. Mobile, non-bolted 4-post units are also worth asking about — we’ve installed several in central Iowa for customers with lighter-duty trucks around 3.25 tons who wanted flexibility to reposition the lift later without drilling into a 4.5 inch slab.

Ceiling Height Changes the Math

Ceiling height is the single most common reason a residential automotive lift order gets revised after the site survey. An 11 foot ceiling is workable for most 2-post and 4-post lifts at full rise, but you lose margin fast once you add a raised vehicle plus the lift’s own height. We always measure to the lowest obstruction — garage door tracks, light fixtures, HVAC ductwork — not just the flat ceiling height, because that’s what actually determines whether you can run the lift to full height safely.

For Ankeny customers specifically, we’ve seen 11 to 12 foot ceilings support both 2-post and 4-post options comfortably, but anything closer to 10 feet starts limiting you to lower-profile 4-post units or forces a compromise on full-rise clearance. If you’re planning driveline work that requires the vehicle at full height for extended periods, don’t guess on ceiling clearance — have it measured before you commit to a configuration.

Concrete and Anchoring: The Part Nobody Budgets For

Every residential automotive lift install depends on the slab underneath it, and this is where DIY research online falls short. A 2-post lift concentrates load through four anchor points, so thin or cracked concrete without rebar is a real limiting factor. A 4-post spreads weight across a larger footprint and, if it’s a mobile non-bolted design, may not need anchoring into the slab at all — which is exactly why customers with older or thinner concrete often lean that direction.
