Why Alignment Work Is Harder on a Rotary Lift Arm

A standard oil change or brake job puts a vehicle up, holds it steady, and brings it back down within twenty minutes. Alignment work is different. The vehicle stays elevated for much longer while a technician cycles the steering, adjusts tie rods, and re-checks camber and toe repeatedly. Every one of those adjustments transfers side-load and vibration through the arm and into the pivot pin and restraint mechanism.

That repeated cycling is exactly why arm restraints and safety-cam systems matter more in an alignment bay than almost anywhere else in the shop. A rotary lift arm that would hold fine under a static oil change load can start showing play under the repeated shifting of alignment work if the safety cam isn’t fully engaged or the restraint pin has worn loose. We tell northeast Iowa alignment shops to treat their lift arms as a wear item tied directly to how the bay is used, not just how old the lift is.

How Safety-Cam Engagement Is Supposed to Work

Every properly functioning two-post lift uses a mechanical safety-cam or ratchet system on each arm that locks the arm rotation in place once the vehicle is raised to height. This is separate from the hydraulic lock — it’s a physical, mechanical backup that keeps the arm from swinging out from under the vehicle even if hydraulic pressure is lost. On most Rotary and Challenger-brand two-post lifts, this cam engages audibly, and a technician should hear and feel it click into place during the raise.

If your team can raise a vehicle and never hear that engagement sound, or if the arm swings freely with any resistance at all once locked, that’s not a minor issue — that’s the primary fall-prevention system on the lift not doing its job. We’ve found worn cam pins, stripped detents, and bent restraint linkages during routine inspections at shops that had no idea the mechanism had stopped functioning correctly, because visually everything still looked normal from across the bay.

Daily Checks Every Alignment Shop Should Run

Before the first vehicle goes up each day, someone on your team should physically check that each rotary lift arm swings smoothly through its full range without binding, that the restraint pin drops fully into its slot, and that the safety cam engages with an audible click at the first locking height. This takes under a minute per arm and it’s the single cheapest insurance policy against a dropped vehicle in your bay.

We also recommend a monthly deeper check specifically for alignment lifts, given how much more cycling they see compared to a general service lift. That means inspecting the cam teeth for rounding, checking the restraint pin for wear grooves, and confirming the arm’s pivot bushings aren’t letting the arm rock side to side under load. A rotary lift arm that rocks laterally even slightly is transferring that play into the safety-cam engagement, which reduces how securely it locks. Catching that early is a five-minute fix; catching it late is a liability claim.

What Worn Restraints Actually Look Like in the Field

We’ve seen a range of failure signs across northeast Iowa shops: arms that drag or feel heavier than they should when swinging into position, mounting bolts that have worked loose from repeated vibration, and safety-cam mechanisms that engage on some teeth but skip others depending on where the arm happens to stop. None of these look dramatic. They look like a slightly stiff arm or a lift that’s just gotten old.

The reality is that a rotary lift arm showing any of these signs has already started failing its restraint function, even if the lift still appears to hold vehicles fine on the surface. Loose mounting bolts in particular are common on lifts that see heavy alignment traffic, because the constant side-loading works bolts loose faster than straight vertical loading does. We check torque on arm mounting hardware as a standard part of our service visits precisely because this failure mode is so common and so easy to miss during a quick visual walk-around.

Two-Stage Arms and Alignment-Specific Considerations

Many alignment bays run two-stage swing arms to get the reach needed for a wider range of vehicle wheelbases, and those arms have an extra pivot point compared to a single-stage arm. That second pivot is another point where wear, looseness, or restraint failure can develop, and it’s one more thing to check during your daily and monthly inspections. A two-stage rotary lift arm needs both pivot points confirmed tight and both restraint points confirmed engaged before you trust it with a vehicle mid-alignment.

If your alignment bay runs two-stage arms, build that second pivot point into your inspection routine explicitly — it’s easy to check the main arm mount and forget the extension joint entirely, and that’s often where the real wear shows up first.
