Overhead Rotary Lifts and Oil Pan Access
Overhead-style two-post lifts, like a lot of the SPOA and SPO-series Rotary units we service, put the cross beam and overhead cable routing above the vehicle rather than at floor level. For oil pan gasket work, that’s actually a nice setup — nothing runs across the front of the bay to trip over, and technicians get a clean shot underneath without dodging a baseplate. But the tradeoff shows up in the parts bin. Overhead configurations route their equalizer cables up and over the top, which means those cables see more flex cycles and more exposure to grease, grit, and heat kicked up from the shop floor. We replace overhead cables more often than baseplate cables on lifts doing high daily cycle counts.
The other wear point unique to overhead units is the sheave and pulley system at the top of the columns. If a shop calls us about a lift that’s suddenly sitting unlevel during an oil change, nine times out of ten it’s a worn sheave or a cable that’s jumped its groove — not the arms. We always tell shops on the Iowa-Nebraska border to have us check sheave wear during their annual inspection rather than waiting for a cable to snap. Baseplate Rotary Lifts and Floor-Level Wear
Baseplate configurations anchor everything at ground level, which is great for overall stability and for shops running mixed-height vehicles, but it changes where the wear happens. The runways on a baseplate unit have those outer slides that need grease and inner rollers that specifically should not be greased — a distinction we run into constantly with shops who grease everything the same way and end up with a flat-spotted roller that won’t roll smoothly anymore. That’s a small maintenance detail, but it’s one of the most common reasons we get calls about a baseplate lift feeling rough or uneven during a job like an oil pan drop, where the vehicle needs to sit dead level.
Baseplate lifts also put more direct load on the anchor bolts and the plate itself, so if a shop is on older concrete near the Iowa-Nebraska border, we usually recommend a slab inspection before reinstalling on baseplate. Arms, Pins, and the Parts That Fail First
Regardless of configuration, arms are the component we replace most for shops doing steady oil pan and undercarriage work. Repetitive positioning under the pan rails puts stress on the arm restraint pins and the carriage pins long before the arm itself gives out. We’ve handled more than one call from a shop where a swing arm broke clean at the pivot after years of drop-in cycles, and in almost every case the restraint pin had already been showing play for months. Stocking spare carriage pins and slider arm hardware is cheap insurance compared to an emergency arm swap that takes a bay out of service for a day.
