Why Wheel Bearing Work Is Harder on a Lift Than Most People Think

Pulling a wheel bearing means loosening axle nuts torqued to several hundred foot-pounds, sometimes with an impact gun while the vehicle is ten feet in the air on the arms. That force doesn’t stay contained in the hub — it transfers straight down through the arm, into the pin, into the carriage, and into the locking mechanism holding that carriage on the column. On a lift with worn arm pins or a stretched slider arm weld, that repeated shock is exactly what turns a small amount of play into a real safety issue. We’ve been called out to shops in the Waukee and greater Des Moines area where a tech noticed the vehicle rock slightly during an impact gun session — that’s not normal, and it’s usually a sign the rotary lift parts holding the arm assembly together have worn past spec.

The other stress point is the carriage pin and slider arm interface itself, since that’s what lets the arm extend and swing to the right contact point under a hub or subframe. If that pin is worn oval instead of round, the arm can shift slightly mid-job right when you’re applying the most torque. Arms and pins take the brunt of it, but they’re not alone. Shops running bearing and brake work constantly also burn through cables on the safety latch mechanism faster than a general repair shop would, because every cycle up and down under load flexes that cable a little more. We get calls regularly from shops that don’t even know the brand or model number of the lift they inherited — just that it’s a used lift, roughly nine thousand pounds capacity, and the safety latch cable or the button on the electrical switch has quit working. We can usually still track down the right part once we know the general lift family and take a few measurements over the phone or from photos.

Base plate shims are another item people don’t think about until the lift starts sitting unevenly on the shop floor, which throws off how square the arms sit under a vehicle — not ideal when you’re trying to keep a hub level while pressing a bearing in. What a Safety-First Inspection Actually Checks

When we come out to inspect a lift for a shop doing heavy wheel bearing volume, we’re not just glancing at the arms. We check the arm restraint pins for wear, the locking mechanism engagement on both columns, the cables and pulleys for fraying or flat spots, and the slide contact points where the carriage rides the column — those outer slides need grease, but the rollers on the inside of the runway should never be greased, because grease on those actually causes flat spots and makes them quit rolling smoothly. That’s a mistake we see more often than you’d expect, even from experienced techs who assume more lubrication is always better.

We also check for equal loading side to side, especially on lifts that see a lot of impact gun use, because that’s where uneven arm wear shows up first. And we take a close look at the sticker on the lift itself — many current Rotary units are manufactured overseas as the brand has shifted some production, and knowing exactly which generation of lift you have helps us order the correct rotary lift parts on the first try instead of guessing and waiting on a return.
