A body shop foreman in Cedar Rapids called us last spring with a problem we hear constantly: he wanted a 2 post car lift for the restoration bay, but the building had a low header over the door, a mezzanine on one side, and a run of conduit crossing right where an overhead beam would sit. He had already been told by two salespeople to “just buy the clearfloor” without anyone asking about the ceiling. We drove up, measured, and put a baseplate unit in instead. That single decision saved him a structural modification and about three weeks of downtime. This guide walks through the same questions we ask every buyer, in the same order, so you can make that call before you spend money.

What Overhead and Baseplate Actually Mean

Every two-post lift has to route hydraulic hoses and equalization cables from one column to the other. There are only two places to put them: over your head or under your tires. An overhead (clearfloor) design runs everything through a crossbeam that bridges the tops of the columns, and that beam usually carries the shutoff bar that stops the lift before a tall roof hits it. A baseplate design runs the hose and cables through a low steel channel bolted to the floor between the columns, so the space above the vehicle is completely open.

Neither one is inherently better. The overhead style is the default in most commercial shops because the floor stays flat and nothing gets run over by a floor jack, a transmission jack, or a parts cart. The baseplate style exists because plenty of real buildings have a ceiling that will not accept a beam at 12 or 13 feet. In restoration and metal work specifically, the baseplate has a second advantage that people forget: you can lift a body shell high and still swing an engine hoist or a boom over the top of it without fighting a crossbeam. We have installed both styles in shops within a mile of each other in Cedar Rapids and both owners were right for their own buildings.

Measuring Your Building Before You Shop

Before we quote anything, we want four numbers. First, the true ceiling height at the lift location, measured to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak of the roof. Lights, sprinkler heads, radiant tube heaters, and door tracks all count as ceiling. Second, the overhead door height, because you need to drive a vehicle in before you can lift it. Third, the bay width from wall to wall or column to column. Fourth, the concrete thickness and age.

A common trap: a shop measures 12 feet to the joists and orders a clearfloor model rated for a 12-foot installation, then discovers the shutoff bar sits at 11 feet 8 inches and the crossbeam needs anchor clearance above that. Overhead two-post lifts generally want somewhere in the 12 to 14 foot range depending on model, and some can be ordered with a low-ceiling adapter kit that drops the beam. If you are under about 11 feet 6 inches, a baseplate configuration is usually the honest answer. We had a customer in North Dakota with a hard 139-inch maximum height who went baseplate for exactly this reason, and his heaviest vehicle was only 6,000 pounds so a 9,000 or 10,000 lb column was plenty.

Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Hear

The single most common reason we tell someone to slow down is concrete. A 2 post car lift concentrates the entire weight of a vehicle into eight or twelve anchor bolts. Most manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb unit, and many want more like four and a quarter to five inches with the anchors set a minimum distance from any joint, crack, or slab edge.

We get calls from people who say their slab is “about five inches, maybe less.” That “maybe less” is the whole problem. A garage floor poured in the 1970s over questionable base can be six inches at the door and three inches in the middle. Coring the slab in two spots costs very little compared to a lift that pulls anchors under load. If the concrete does not measure up, the fix is straightforward: cut out pads roughly four feet square under each column, dig down, pour new reinforced concrete to the manufacturer’s spec, and let it cure the full 28 days before anchoring. A restoration shop doing metal work is holding cars in the air for days or weeks at a time, not minutes, so the margin matters more than it does in a quick-lube bay. Symmetric, Asymmetric, and Why It Matters for Restoration

The second configuration question after overhead versus baseplate is arm geometry. A symmetric lift has columns facing each other directly with equal-length arms, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts. That is ideal for heavy trucks and for anything where you want balanced load distribution. The downside is that the doors open into the columns, which is annoying if you are getting in and out constantly.

An asymmetric lift rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and pairs short front arms with long rear arms, pushing the vehicle back so the doors clear. For a restoration bay where you are in and out of the cabin pulling trim, dash components, and wiring, that door clearance is worth real money in daily frustration. Many current models from Rotary and Challenger are versymmetric, meaning the arm set lets you configure either way depending on what rolls in. If your shop in Cedar Rapids sees a 1968 Mustang on Monday and a three-quarter-ton pickup on Thursday, that flexibility is the right buy. We generally steer restoration and metal-work shops toward a versymmetric 10,000 or 12,000 lb unit rather than a dedicated symmetric truck lift, unless the heavy stuff is the majority of the work.

Capacity, Arms, and Adapters

Most independent shops are well served by 10,000 pounds. That covers essentially every passenger car, crossover, half-ton pickup, and most three-quarter-ton trucks. Step up to 12,000 or 15,000 if you regularly see one-ton duallies, loaded service vans, or ambulances. Going bigger than you need is not free: the columns are taller and heavier, the footprint grows, and the price climbs.

What actually determines whether a 2 post car lift is useful day to day is the arm and adapter package. Telescoping three-stage front arms reach unibody pinch welds on short-wheelbase cars. Drop-end or low-profile arms get under sports cars and lowered vehicles without a set of ramps. Screw-up pad extensions in two and four inch heights let you reach frame rails on lifted trucks. For restoration work we push people toward a full set of stackable adapters and a pair of frame cradle pads, because an unrestored car frequently has rotten rockers where the factory lift point used to be. Installation, Power, and What We Actually Do On Site

A standard two-post install in a building that is ready takes our crew most of a day. We uncrate, stand the columns, square and shim them to the manufacturer’s tolerance, hammer-drill and set the anchors to spec torque, route the hoses and cables, fill and bleed the hydraulics, cycle the lift under load, and test every safety lock position. Then we walk the owner and the techs through the operation and the daily inspection.

Power is where jobs stall. Most 10,000 lb units ship with a 220V single-phase motor that needs a dedicated 30-amp circuit within reach of the power column. If your shop only has 110V at that wall, get an electrician scheduled before the lift arrives, not after. Three-phase is common in older commercial buildings and is generally the better motor if you have it. We also see people who buy a unit online, unload it with a forklift, and set it themselves. That is legal and plenty of capable people do it, but read the manual cover to cover, and if you are not confident with an anchor torque wrench or a shim stack, hire it out. A 2 post car lift that is out of plumb by a quarter inch over the column height will chatter in the locks and wear the slide blocks unevenly within a year.

Getting the Buying Decision Right the First Time

Here is the short version of everything above. Measure your lowest obstruction, not your peak. If you are above roughly 12 feet with a clean run across the bay, an overhead model gives you a flat floor and a built-in shutoff bar. If you are under that, or you have a mezzanine, a beam, ductwork, or a crane you need to swing over the vehicle, go baseplate and accept the low channel on the floor. Core your concrete before you commit. Choose versymmetric arms if your work mix varies. Buy the adapter kit.
