A heavy-duty truck shop owner outside Dubuque called us last spring with a straightforward question that turned into a two-hour conversation: what does a 2 post car lift actually cost him, all-in, once the freight truck leaves and the anchors are torqued? He had been pricing a used unit off a farm auction listing against a new symmetric column setup, and the sticker gap looked enormous. It usually does. What the sticker never shows is freight, rigging, anchors, concrete work, electrical, and the hours a technician loses fighting a lift that never quite holds level. What the Dubuque Truck Shop Was Really Buying

The shop in question runs medium-duty trucks, dually pickups, and a steady flow of tire rotation and wheel work. That mix matters more than any spec sheet number. A tire and wheel operation means the vehicle goes up, the wheels come off, and a tech spends fifteen to forty minutes with the vehicle in the air while torque loads shift around the arms. A lift that creeps down half an inch in that window is not an annoyance, it is a safety problem and a comeback generator.

He had settled on 14,000 lb capacity, which is the right call for his fleet even though his heaviest regular vehicle is closer to 9,000 lb. Capacity headroom on a 2 post car lift buys you arm strength and column rigidity, not just a bigger number. The used unit he found was a 12,000 lb asymmetric with unknown cable history and no data plate legible enough to identify the manufacturer. New, he was looking at a clearfloor Rotary or Challenger in the 14,000 lb class with documented ALI certification, a parts catalog that still exists, and a warranty that means something. Before we talked dollars, we talked about which of those two things he could actually put a truck on for the next fifteen years.

Line Item One: The Equipment Itself

New two-post pricing in 2024 and 2025 has settled into fairly predictable tiers. A 10,000 lb clearfloor unit from a reputable brand sits in the lower tier. Step up to 12,000 lb and you are in the middle tier. A 14,000 to 18,000 lb heavy-duty column with three-stage arms and taller lift height lands in the upper tier, and 30,000 lb-plus PKS-style setups are a separate conversation entirely. Those ranges move with steel prices and freight surcharges, so we quote live rather than publishing numbers that go stale.

Used equipment is where the spread gets wild. We have seen solid Rotary SPO-series columns come out of a closing dealership for a fraction of new pricing, and we have seen unbranded imports listed for nearly the same money as a new BendPak. The variable is not age, it is documentation. A used unit with a legible serial plate, an intact ALI label, known cable replacement history, and an owner who can tell you the last time it was inspected is a real asset. A unit that was cut loose from a slab with a torch and left outside for two winters is scrap with hydraulic fluid in it. When somebody sends us auction photos, the first thing we look for is the carriage slide blocks and the cable sheaves, because those tell the truth about how the lift was maintained.

Line Item Two: Freight, Rigging, and Getting It Off the Truck

This is the cost people forget. Two-post columns ship on a flatbed or in a dry van at roughly 1,400 to 2,200 lb per crate depending on capacity. Residential and small-shop deliveries frequently need a liftgate or a rigging service, and in northeast Iowa that is not always a same-week booking. One of the smartest things a buyer can tell us is what we heard from a customer near Grand Forks: he had a forklift on site and did not need install. That single sentence took hundreds of dollars off his delivered cost.

If you do not have a forklift, a telehandler, or a friendly neighbor with a skid loader and forks, budget for it. We have unloaded columns with everything from a rough-terrain forklift to a tractor with pallet forks, and we have also watched a crate get dropped because somebody tried to muscle it off a tailgate. Freight damage claims are a paperwork nightmare and they cost you weeks of downtime. For the Dubuque shop, freight to the eastern edge of the state was manageable, and he already ran a forklift for tire deliveries, so this line item stayed small. Buyers in rural areas without equipment should assume this is a meaningful percentage of the total, not a rounding error.

Line Item Three: Concrete, Anchors, and the Slab Nobody Measured

Every 2 post car lift lives or dies on the concrete under it. Manufacturers typically specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb unit, and heavier capacities push that to five or six inches with defined cure time and edge distance from control joints. We hear “about five inches, maybe less” a lot, and “maybe less” is the phrase that costs money.

Coring a test hole is cheap. Ripping out and repouring a 6×6 footing pad after an anchor pulls is not. We have cut in footing pads for shops in Dubuque, Waterloo, and the Quad Cities where the original slab was a 1960s pour with rebar in unpredictable places, and the correct move was always to cut, dig, and pour a proper pad rather than gamble on wedge anchors in thin concrete. Figure a footing repour into the mid hundreds to low thousands depending on access and how far the concrete truck has to reach. Also plan for anchor hardware, because used lifts almost never come with reusable anchors. New anchors, correct length, correct diameter, torqued to the manufacturer’s spec with a calibrated wrench. That is not optional and it is not the place to save forty dollars.

Line Item Four: Electrical, Air, and Overhead Clearance

Most two-post power units run 220V single-phase, though three-phase options exist and are common in commercial buildings. If your bay only has 110V available, an electrician run is coming, and in older Iowa shop buildings that can mean a panel upgrade rather than just a dedicated circuit. Get an electrician to look at the panel before you order the lift, not after the crate is sitting in the bay.

Overhead clearance drives the clearfloor versus baseplate decision. A clearfloor unit puts the crossbeam overhead and gives you a clean floor, which is what you want for tire and wheel work because nothing trips a tech carrying a wheel. But it needs ceiling height, generally 12 feet minimum and more for taller capacities. We had a buyer with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit who correctly landed on a baseplate configuration instead. Baseplate lifts run the hoses and equalizer cables through a floor plate, which is a mild nuisance and a great compromise when the roof structure will not cooperate. The Dubuque shop had 16-foot clear height, so overhead was the obvious answer. Air supply matters too if you want air-line-fed pad accessories or an air-release safety system, and adding a drop later always costs more than doing it during install.

Line Item Five: Installation Labor and What It Buys You

A competent two-post installation is roughly a one-day job for a two-person crew on good concrete with power already run: unpack, set columns, plumb and square, set arms, hang cables and hoses, fill and bleed the hydraulics, verify equalization, load-test, and walk the owner through the daily and monthly checks. Add time for coring, cutting a floor channel on a baseplate unit, or working around an existing lift that has to come out first.

Some buyers self-install and do it well. We have handed off crates to shop owners who read the manual twice, own a rotary hammer and a transit level, and called us once with a bleeding question. Others discover halfway through that squaring two columns to each other and to the drive-through path is fussier than it looks, and that a lift set out of square wears cable sheaves and slide blocks unevenly for the rest of its life. Professional install also usually comes with a documented ALI-style inspection and a first-year service relationship, which matters when a Challenger two-post starts running the motor without lifting. That exact complaint came to us from a shop last year, and the fix was a cylinder and check-valve issue that a technician diagnosed in under an hour because he had seen it fifty times.

The Used vs New Decision Framework We Actually Use

Here is the framework we gave the Dubuque owner. Buy used if three things are true: the unit is a major brand with a live parts catalog, you can see it operate under load before money changes hands, and you have already priced cables, slide blocks, arm pins, and a full hydraulic service into your total. Cables alone on a 14,000 lb unit can run into four figures, and they are a wear item with a real service life. If a used lift needs cables, a cylinder, and anchors, you are often within a few hundred dollars of a new mid-tier unit with a warranty.

Buy new if your bay is a revenue center. A 2 post car lift that goes down for two weeks waiting on a discontinued part costs a busy shop far more than the price gap between used and new. For a hobbyist working on one old car in a 20-foot-wide garage with 14-foot ceilings, used is often the smart, honest answer, and we have quoted plenty of those.
