A crew chief for a dirt-track team in southeast Iowa called us last spring with a problem we hear constantly: he needed a 2 post car lift in the team shop before the season opened, he had a number in his head that was about sixty percent of what he actually needed to spend, and he had no idea whether the ceiling in his rented building would even allow a clearfloor model. His crew was pulling differential fluid out of a stock car by jacking one corner at a time on a cracked slab. We drove down, measured, and built him a decision tree instead of a sales pitch. That tree is what this article is — budget first, then configuration, then how the payment schedule actually works so the equipment doesn’t eat the whole season’s parts money.

Start With the Real Budget, Not the Wish Number

Almost every conversation opens with a wish number. We had a hobby customer in Ankeny tell us five thousand dollars, and a mail-route driver in northern Missouri say he didn’t feel the need to spend ten grand. Both numbers were sincere and both were incomplete, because neither included freight, installation labor, concrete work, or the power drop. The honest way to budget is to break the project into four buckets: the equipment itself, delivery to your door, installation and anchoring, and electrical. On a residential-grade 10,000 lb unit those last three buckets often add thirty to forty percent on top of the equipment price. On a commercial 12,000 lb Rotary or Challenger with a heavier column and a certified install, the ratio shifts but the total climbs.

Once you know the real all-in number, you can decide where to compromise without compromising safety. Compromising on cosmetics, on optional drip trays, on a second set of adapter pads — fine. Compromising on capacity or on anchor depth is not a compromise, it’s a future incident report. The crew chief’s original number wouldn’t cover a commercial-duty setup, so we mapped two paths: a home-shop-tier unit he could buy outright, or a commercial unit financed over thirty-six months with monthly payments that landed under what his team spent on tires in a single month. He picked the second path, and the reason was simple: he wanted the equipment to still be right in year eight.

Capacity: Size for the Heaviest Thing You’ll Ever Roll In

We ask one question above all others: what is the heaviest vehicle that will ever go on this? Not the average, not the usual — the heaviest. A shop in North Dakota told us his heaviest was 6,000 lbs and he wanted a 9,000 lb unit. That’s technically fine, but it leaves almost no margin once you factor in awkward loading, an unbalanced pickup with a full bed, or the day a customer’s three-quarter-ton shows up unannounced. Our default recommendation for any mixed-use shop is 10,000 lbs minimum, and 12,000 lbs if trucks are more than an occasional thing.

Capacity ratings assume balanced loading across all four arms, which real life rarely delivers. A stock car with the engine set back and ballast on the left side loads asymmetrically no matter how carefully you spot it. Front-engine trucks put roughly sixty percent of their weight forward. That’s why we’d rather sell a customer more capacity than he thinks he needs than get a call about arms deflecting under a load that was technically within spec. Stepping from 10,000 to 12,000 lbs typically costs less than a set of good wheels, and the heavier unit usually comes with thicker columns, better carriage bearings, and higher-rated cables. If you’re financing anyway, the capacity upgrade adds only a few dollars to the monthly payment — that’s the single best value decision in the whole tree.

Overhead or Baseplate: Let the Building Decide

This is where the decision tree branches hardest, and the building makes the call, not preference. Overhead-style units run the equalizer cables and the hydraulic line through a top beam, which keeps the floor completely clear but requires ceiling height — typically twelve feet minimum for a full-rise unit, more if you want to raise a tall van or a truck with a roof rack. Baseplate units route everything through a low channel across the floor, so they work in buildings with ten- or eleven-foot ceilings, but you’re stepping over that channel forever and dragging floor jacks across it.

The North Dakota shop had a hard ceiling limit of 139 inches and correctly concluded he needed a baseplate design. The crew chief in southeast Iowa had fourteen feet of clear height, so we put him on a clearfloor overhead unit and he’ll never regret it. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak — that means trusses, light fixtures, garage door tracks, and the open door itself. A sixteen-foot door in a building with a low header still limits you. Also check what’s beside the lift: one customer had a loft on the left and a wall on the right, which ruled out a wide-drive-thru configuration and pushed us toward a symmetric layout with tighter column spacing. Sort out the building before you shop for a 2 post car lift, because the building isn’t going to move.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric for a Race Shop

Symmetric means the columns face each other directly and the four arms are roughly the same length, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses shorter front arms and longer rear arms, moving the vehicle rearward so the doors clear the columns. For a general repair shop that sees daily door swings, asymmetric is a quality-of-life upgrade nobody regrets. For a race shop, the calculus changes.

The crew chief’s cars have no doors worth speaking of, but they do have wide bodies, long overhangs, and pickup points that don’t match a passenger car at all. Symmetric arms with a wider spread gave him more room to place pads on the frame rails and better access to the differential and rear suspension with the car centered. He also wanted to put the team’s trailer tow vehicle up occasionally, and a symmetric unit with expandable top beam width handled both. Some BendPak and Challenger models split the difference with telescoping arms that can be set up either way, which is the flexible answer if your fleet is genuinely mixed. What we tell people is this: if your day is mostly doors — brake jobs, interiors, general service — go asymmetric. If your day is mostly underside work on odd-shaped vehicles, symmetric with long-reach arms wins. A 2 post car lift is a ten-to-twenty-year purchase, so pick for the work you’ll actually be doing, not the work you did last month.

Concrete: The Cheapest Way to Fail an Install

Nothing kills more installs than a slab that won’t hold anchors. Most two-post manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many commercial units call for more depending on capacity and column reaction loads. “About five inches but may be less” — which is exactly what one Missouri customer told us — is not a spec, it’s a hope. We core-drill or use a rebar/depth scanner before we anchor anything, and we’ve walked away from more than one job until the customer poured proper pads.

The fix isn’t complicated: cut out the footprint under each column, dig down, tie in rebar, and pour a pad sized to the manufacturer’s drawing. On a two-post that’s usually two pads, each a few feet square and eight to twelve inches deep, then a proper cure before anchoring. Budget it as a separate line item and get it done before your equipment ships, because a lift sitting on the floor in crates while you wait on concrete to cure is a frustrating month. Also think about slope and drainage — a slab that pitches toward a drain will make the columns out of plumb, and shimming a column is fine within limits but not a substitute for a level base. If you’re building new, tell your concrete contractor where the lift is going and have them thicken that area during the original pour. Financing Terms and How the Payment Schedule Works

Here’s the part most sites won’t discuss plainly. Equipment financing for a 2 post car lift generally comes in three shapes: a straight equipment loan through a lender, a capital lease with a nominal buyout at the end, or a fair-market-value lease that behaves more like a rental with an option. Terms typically run twenty-four to sixty months. Shorter terms mean higher payments and less total interest; longer terms flatten the monthly number but you pay more overall and you may still be paying on a unit that’s out of warranty. For most shops we see, thirty-six months is the sweet spot on a commercial two-post.

The payment schedule usually starts thirty days after the equipment ships or is accepted, not thirty days after you place the order. That matters, because it means you can often order in the off-season, get the install done, and have the first payment land after the equipment is already earning. Most lenders want a modest down payment or first-and-last payment up front, and approval on a small ticket like a two-post is often same-day with a simple application. A few things that improve terms: two or more years in business, a clean business credit file, and buying new rather than used — lenders are much friendlier on new equipment because the collateral value is predictable. Installation, Commissioning, and What Happens in Year Two

Some customers want us to install; others, like the North Dakota shop and the Missouri mail-route driver, have a forklift and a weekend and want to do it themselves. Both are legitimate. If you’re self-installing, read the manual twice, dry-fit the columns before anchoring, torque anchors to spec with a calibrated wrench, and don’t skip the cable tensioning and safety-lock synchronization steps — that’s where DIY installs most often go sideways. Then plan for maintenance, because a two-post is not a fixture, it’s a machine. Grease the carriage slide blocks, inspect equalizer cables for broken strands and proper tension, check the arm restraint gears for wear, and cycle the safety locks to confirm they engage audibly at every position. We got a call from one shop with a Challenger unit whose motor ran and had fluid but wouldn’t lift — that turned out to be a simple pump issue, not a catastrophic failure, and a five-minute diagnostic saved them a needless replacement. Annual inspection is required by ANSI/ALI standards for commercial shops and it’s just good sense for a home garage. Keep the manual, note the serial number, and keep a wear-parts list handy.
