Why Body Shops Buy Two-Post Instead of Four-Post
Collision shops sometimes assume a four-post is the safer purchase because it drives on and feels stable. For body work and mechanical work under the same roof, that instinct usually costs you money. A four-post keeps the wheels loaded, which is fine for storage, alignment, and detail work but terrible when you need suspension hanging free to pull a knuckle, or when you need clear access to rocker panels, frame rails, and pinch welds for a pull. A two-post picks the vehicle up by the frame or the unibody points and leaves the entire underside and both wheel wells open.
The second reason is floor space. A four-post runway eats a bay permanently. Two columns with the arms swung parallel give you a bay you can still roll a frame rack cart through, park a car under, or use for a paint-prep staging spot on a slow day. Shops we serve in eastern Iowa frequently run one four-post for alignment and two or three two-post bays for everything else, and that mix is not an accident — it is what happens after a decade of watching where the labor hours actually go. If your ticket mix leans toward suspension, exhaust, driveline, brakes, and structural access, the two-post wins on productivity per square foot every time.
Capacity: Match It to Your Ticket Mix, Not Your Ego
The most common capacity questions we field are 9,000, 10,000, 12,000, and 14,000 pounds. For a body shop working passenger cars, crossovers, half-ton pickups, and the occasional three-quarter-ton, a 10,000 lb unit is the workhorse and it is where the best value lives. Manufacturers build enormous volume at that rating, which means arms, pads, cables, cylinders, and lock assemblies are all easy to source years later. Step up to 12,000 or 14,000 only if you regularly take in dual-rear-wheel trucks, cutaway vans, or loaded work vehicles — and understand that heavier capacity brings a bigger anchor footprint, thicker concrete requirements, and a wider column stance that may not fit your existing bay.
Where shops get into trouble is the honest weight of a modern vehicle. A half-ton crew cab with a diesel option, a full tank, and a bed full of tools is not the 4,500 pounds people remember from the nineties. Add a full-size SUV or an EV with a battery pack under the floor and you are near 7,000 pounds before anyone loads a toolbox in the back. A 10,000 lb rating handles all of that with margin. What it does not handle is guessing. Weigh your heaviest regular customer vehicle if you have a scale, or look up the GVWR, and buy the tier above that number. Overbuying capacity by one tier is cheap insurance. Overbuying by three tiers just means a bigger freight bill and a harder install.
Transmission Service on a Two-Post: Clearance, Rise, and Jacks
Transmission and transaxle work is the job that exposes a badly chosen lift. You need three things: enough rise that a tech can stand upright under the tunnel, enough unobstructed floor to roll a telescoping transmission jack into position, and column geometry that lets the jack approach from the side without fighting an arm. That combination is why we steer transmission-heavy shops toward a clearfloor 2 post car lift whenever ceiling height allows. A baseplate model runs its plumbing across the floor between the columns, and a loaded transmission jack rolling over that plate at the wrong moment is a bad afternoon.
Rise matters more than people expect. Most 10,000 lb two-post units give a maximum pad height in the 69 to 79 inch range depending on column length. If your techs are six foot two, the taller column option is not a luxury, it is the difference between working and crouching. On the Marion shop’s replacement unit we specified the extended column because two of their four techs were tall, and the foreman told us later it was the single thing everyone commented on. Also plan the crossmember and support fixtures: a good transmission jack with a proper adapter saddle, a couple of tall jack stands rated for the load, and a hydraulic support for the engine when you drop a front-wheel-drive cradle. The lift holds the car. It is not a substitute for supporting the assembly you are removing.
Concrete, Anchors, and the Inspection Nobody Wants to Do
Every two-post buying conversation eventually lands on the slab, and it should. All of the overturning load from a lifted vehicle transfers through the column base plate into a small cluster of anchors. Typical manufacturer requirements for a 10,000 lb unit are four to four and a half inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured a minimum of 28 days, with specified minimum distance to slab edges, expansion joints, and saw cuts. Twelve-thousand-pound and larger units generally demand more depth. We have measured Iowa shop floors that came in under three inches with no reinforcement at all, and we have seen buyers describe their slab as “probably six to eight inches” when it was neither.
Test before you buy. Drill a small hole at each column location, measure the depth, and note whether you hit anything you should not have — radiant tubing, post-tension cable, conduit, or drain line. If the slab is short, cut and pour footing pads at each column: roughly four feet square, twelve inches deep, tied with rebar and cured a full 28 days. It is not glamorous and it is not expensive relative to the cost of a dropped vehicle and a totaled repair. After install, keep the paperwork. ANSI/ALI standards call for periodic inspection of a 2 post car lift by a qualified inspector, and more insurers and manufacturers now ask for that record when a claim shows up. Brand Tiers and What You Are Actually Paying For
We stock and install across the tiers because different shops need different things. On the commercial side, Rotary and Challenger are what we put in dealership and high-cycle production bays. You are paying for column steel, carriage geometry that stays true after ten thousand cycles, lock mechanisms that engage crisply when they are cold, and a parts pipeline that will still have your cable set and cylinder in stock a decade out. For a body shop running three techs hard five days a week, that longevity math works out even though the purchase price is higher.
BendPak and Atlas serve the value and light-commercial end, and they serve it well. A BendPak XPR-10S with an expandable top beam, telescoping arms, drop-end arms, and single-piece columns is a legitimately good machine for a shop with moderate volume or a serious home and hobby setup. The features overlap heavily with premium units; what differs is duty cycle expectation and how deep the parts bench runs in year twelve. Our honest guidance: if a bay will see more than a dozen vehicles a day, buy the commercial tier. If it will see a handful, buy the value tier and put the difference toward a second bay. What we will not do is sell you a bargain 2 post car lift from a brand whose replacement cables we cannot source, because that call always comes back to us and it is never a good one.
Financing Terms and a Payment Schedule Body Shops Can Live With
Very few of the shops we work with pay cash for lifts, and the ones that do usually shouldn’t. Equipment financing on a two-post typically runs 36 to 60 months with a modest down payment, fixed monthly payments, and the equipment serving as collateral, which keeps the paperwork simple. A dollar-buyout lease behaves almost identically at the end and often approves faster for shops with under two years of operating history. Some buyers prefer to draw on an existing line of credit and pay it down through the busy season — that suits collision work well, because insurance-driven volume tends to spike after the first ice storm and again in spring hail season.
Our own payment schedule is deliberately boring. A deposit at order locks the unit, the rated freight, and your delivery window. The balance is due before or at delivery. Installation, if we are doing it, is quoted separately and billed after we commission the lift and walk you through the safety functions. If a lender is funding the purchase, we send the invoice, serial number, and spec sheet directly to them so nothing stalls at the dock. The number we tell every foreman to run is simple: divide the monthly payment by your effective labor rate. If a new bay adds even three billable hours a week, the note is covered. Install, Training, and the First Year of Ownership
Delivery is not the finish line. A proper install means setting both columns plumb and shimming to spec, torquing anchors in the specified sequence and pattern, balancing equalizer cable tension so both carriages rise and lock together, plumbing and bleeding the hydraulics, verifying the overhead shutoff or baseplate routing, and cycling the safety locks under load before a customer car ever goes up. We do that in a few hours and document it. If you install it yourself, budget a full day, have a forklift or telehandler and a second person, and do not skip the anchor torque wrench.
Then train everybody, including the tech who has used two-posts for twenty years. Correct lift point selection on modern unibody vehicles is not obvious, pad height matters, and the habit of lowering onto the locks instead of holding on hydraulic pressure is the single most important thing to enforce. In the first year, plan a quick monthly walkaround: check hydraulic fluid, look at cable condition and tension, verify both locks engage audibly, wipe and inspect the arm pins, and check anchor torque at the six-month mark. We schedule an annual service visit for most of our Iowa accounts, and it usually takes an hour and catches something small before it becomes a Friday-afternoon phone call.
