A 2 post car lift is usually sold on capacity and column height, but the thing that stalls the most installations we handle in Marion and the rest of Linn County is electrical. A restoration shop owner called us last spring after his hoist had been sitting crated in the corner of the shop for eleven weeks. The concrete was right, the ceiling was right, the anchors were in the truck. What he did not have was a dedicated circuit, and the panel in his 1960s block building was already maxed out. That single unknown cost him almost three months of billable CV axle and half-shaft work. This article walks the whole decision tree — budget first, then power, then configuration — so you do not repeat it.

Start With Budget, Not With Brand

Every decision tree we walk with a customer starts at money, because money determines how many other doors stay open. In rough tiers: entry-level imported hoists in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range sit at the bottom, mid-tier domestic-assembled units with better arm hardware and longer warranties sit in the middle, and Rotary or Challenger commercial iron sits at the top. A hobbyist in eastern Iowa restoring one car at a time is genuinely well served at the bottom or middle of that range. A shop that turns half-shafts and CV axles all week is not, and we say so even when it costs us the faster sale.

What surprises people is how much the electrical decision is really a budget decision in disguise. A single-phase 220V power unit is standard on most residential and light-commercial hoists, and if you already have 220 in the building you are done. If you do not, running a new circuit from the panel to a column can add several hundred to well over a thousand dollars depending on distance, conduit, and whether the panel needs a subpanel added. We have seen a customer save fifteen hundred on the hoist and spend two thousand on the electrician. Budget the power first, then shop, and the rest of the tree gets much easier to walk.

Single-Phase Versus Three-Phase: What Actually Matters

Most of the confusion we field about a 2 post car lift comes down to phase. Single-phase 208-230V is what nearly every home garage and small independent shop in Marion has available, and it is what ships standard on the overwhelming majority of hoists we sell. Three-phase 208-230V or 460V is a commercial-building feature. If you are in a newer industrial condo or a converted dealership bay, you may already have it, and if you do, use it — three-phase motors run cooler, draw less current per leg, and generally last longer under heavy duty cycles.

Here is the part people get wrong: the power unit is not universal. A single-phase motor cannot be rewired to three-phase, and a three-phase motor will not run on single-phase without a rotary phase converter or a VFD, both of which add cost and complexity. If you buy used equipment off an auction site, check the motor plate before the truck leaves. We have swapped more mismatched power units than we care to count, and while a replacement single-phase unit is not catastrophically expensive, it is an avoidable line item. Breaker Sizing, Wire Gauge, and the 25-Foot Rule

For a typical 10,000 lb single-phase hoist, plan on a dedicated 30-amp two-pole breaker feeding a disconnect near the column. Some 220V units are fine on 20 amps, and some larger 12,000 to 15,000 lb machines want more, but 30 amps is the number we quote to most Marion customers as a safe planning figure. The circuit should be dedicated. Sharing it with a compressor is one of the fastest ways to nuisance-trip your breaker in the middle of a lift cycle, and that is genuinely unsettling when a car is in the air.

Wire gauge depends on run length. Inside about 25 feet, 10 AWG copper is typically adequate for a 30-amp circuit. Beyond that, voltage drop starts costing you motor performance, and we tell people to step up to 8 AWG on longer pulls. A motor fed sagging voltage runs hot, lifts slowly, and dies early — and the symptom looks exactly like a failing power unit, so you end up buying a part you did not need. Have your electrician measure voltage at the disconnect under load, not at rest. If you see more than a few volts of drop, fix the feed before you blame the hoist.

Clear-Floor Overhead Versus Baseplate: The Ceiling Question

Once power is settled, the configuration branch opens. Clear-floor overhead models run the equalization cables and hydraulic lines through a top beam, which keeps the floor between the columns completely open. That is the configuration most shops want, because you can roll a transmission jack, a creeper, or a drain pan straight through without stepping over anything. The tradeoff is height. An overhead hoist typically needs somewhere in the 12 to 14 foot range of clear ceiling, and the shutoff bar eats into your maximum vehicle height.

Baseplate models route everything through a low channel across the floor. They fit under ceilings as low as roughly 11 feet and are the right answer in older Iowa buildings with joists, ductwork, or a loft on one side. We had a customer in a converted farm shop with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit and a mezzanine over one bay — baseplate was the only workable choice, and it has served him fine for years. The floor channel is a minor nuisance you stop noticing in a week. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak, before you commit to either configuration.

Why CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work Rewards the Right 2 Post Car Lift

Restoration and driveline work is the use case that makes a two-post worth the electrical hassle. Pulling a CV axle means you need the suspension hanging free, full access to the inner joint at the transmission, and enough room under the car to swing a pry bar and get a slide hammer set up. A drive-on rack fights you on all three. Hanging the vehicle by its frame or pinch welds gives you the drooping suspension geometry that lets a half-shaft come out without a wrestling match.

Arm configuration matters more here than people expect. Asymmetric hoists rotate the vehicle rearward so the doors clear the columns, which is great for interior work but can put the front arms in an awkward spot for driveline access. Symmetric hoists center the car and give you cleaner reach to both inner joints. Three-stage front arms let you get short on a compact and long on a body-on-frame truck without swapping adapters. Concrete, Anchors, and the Thing That Ruins Installs

Electrical stops installs, but concrete ruins them. The published minimum for most 10,000 lb hoists is four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with adequate distance to any expansion joint or slab edge. In practice we want more than the minimum, especially in older Marion shops where the original pour may be three and a half inches of who-knows-what over questionable base. We have cored slabs that measured five inches at the door and barely three in the middle of the bay.

Get it verified before delivery. A hammer drill test hole in the anchor location costs nothing and tells you everything. If the slab is thin, the fix is a cut-out and a reinforced pad — a couple of square yards of new concrete, poured properly, cured properly, and then you anchor with confidence. That is a manageable expense compared to a column that pulls its anchors with a customer’s car overhead. Putting the Decision Tree Together

Here is the whole thing in order. One: set your budget, including electrical work and any concrete remediation, not just the hardware. Two: confirm what power you have — voltage, phase, available panel capacity, and distance to the bay. Three: measure your lowest ceiling obstruction and decide overhead versus baseplate. Four: match capacity to your heaviest vehicle with real margin, not to the number on the window sticker. Five: choose symmetric or asymmetric based on the work you actually do. Six: verify the slab. Then buy.
