Choosing a 2 post car lift for a collision shop is a different problem than choosing one for a general repair bay, and the foreman who called us from eastern Nebraska last fall understood that immediately. His shop was adding two bays, and the estimator kept pushing four-posts because they’re easy to load. The foreman wanted two-posts because his techs need doors open, rockers accessible, and nothing under the car blocking a pull or a panel replacement. He was right, and we spent an hour on the phone working through capacity, column style, and slab prep before anybody quoted anything. This guide is that conversation, written out. Start With Capacity, Not Price

Every shop we talk to guesses low on capacity. The foreman in Nebraska initially said 10,000 pounds was plenty because his heaviest regular customer vehicle was a three-quarter-ton pickup around 7,000 pounds curb weight. Then we asked about EVs and half-ton crew cabs with a full bed, and about the wrecked vehicles that come in on a rollback with water in the carpet and a full tank. Curb weight on a spec sheet is not what rolls into a collision bay.

For a body shop we recommend 12,000 pounds as the practical floor and 15,000 for shops that see fleet trucks, heavy-duty pickups, or electric vehicles with skateboard battery packs. The cost difference between a 10,000 and a 12,000 lb column set is a fraction of what you’ll pay for a single bay’s worth of downtime when a tech has to refuse a job. Capacity also isn’t just a total number — check the per-arm rating and the maximum load distribution. A 12,000 lb lift with a 3,000 lb per-arm limit gets awkward fast under a truck with a heavy front axle and an engine hanging out past the front wheels. We size the equipment to the worst vehicle you’ll ever see, not the average one, because the worst vehicle is the one that will be sitting in your lot on a Friday afternoon.

Asymmetric, Symmetric, and Why Body Shops Care

This is the spec that matters most in collision work and the one most commonly gotten wrong. On a symmetric two-post, the columns face each other directly and the vehicle sits centered between them, roughly half in front of the columns and half behind. On an asymmetric setup, the columns are rotated and the arms are different lengths, which pushes the vehicle rearward so the doors clear the columns.

If your techs need to open doors on a raised vehicle — and in a body shop they always do, for wiring, trim, glass, and interior access — asymmetric is the answer. Symmetric handles long wheelbase trucks better and centers heavy loads more evenly, which is why heavy-duty shops favor it. A lot of modern lifts split the difference with a versymmetric arm design that can be configured either way, and that’s typically what we spec for a mixed shop. The foreman went versymmetric on both bays. His techs run door-open on unibody sedans and crossovers most of the week, then flip arm configuration when a long-bed pickup comes in for a frame-adjacent repair. One more thing on arms: three-stage front arms are worth the upgrade. They reach further forward on long-nose vehicles and retract tighter on short ones, and in a shop where a different vehicle is on the 2 post car lift every two hours, arm flexibility is time saved every single cycle.

The Site Survey: Four Numbers That Decide Everything

Before we quote a 2 post car lift we want four numbers from your building. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — not the peak, and not the truss bottom if there’s conduit or a sprinkler head hanging below it. Slab thickness, verified by core or by drilling a test hole, not by what the contractor said in 1998. Slab compressive strength if you have the pour records, or at minimum the age and visible condition. And overhead door height, because that determines whether an overhead-crossbar model is even possible.

In the Nebraska shop, the ceiling was 14 feet clear but there was an air line and a light fixture run at 11 feet 8 inches over one of the new bays. That single detail moved one lift to a baseplate model and kept the other on overhead. Nobody would have caught it from a phone conversation without asking. Slab was 6 inches, which is comfortable for a 12,000 lb unit — most manufacturers want a minimum of 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb lift, and more as capacity climbs. If your slab is thin, cracked, or you genuinely don’t know, the fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad under each column. It’s a day of work and some concrete, and it’s dramatically cheaper than what happens when an anchor pulls out of a four-inch slab with a car in the air.

Baseplate vs. Overhead in a Production Bay

Overhead models put the hydraulic hose, the equalization cable, and the safety shutoff bar in a crossbar above the vehicle, leaving the floor completely clear. Baseplate models run everything through a low cover across the floor between the columns. In a body shop, both have real arguments.

Clear floor is the obvious win for overhead — nothing to sweep around, nothing for a floor jack or a parts cart to hang up on, no cover plate to work loose. But overhead crossbars limit vehicle height, and in a collision shop you occasionally lift a tall van or a box truck. The shutoff bar helps, but if a tall vehicle is a weekly reality, the overhead model becomes a constraint. Baseplate models have no upper limit on vehicle height and often come in a bit cheaper, at the cost of that floor crossover. We generally tell shops: overhead if your ceiling supports it and your vehicle mix is cars and pickups, baseplate if you have low ceilings, low doors, or tall vehicles. Both configurations are equally safe and equally serviceable when installed correctly. And for a shop running four or five bays, mixing them intentionally — a couple of overheads for volume work and one baseplate for the tall stuff — is a smarter layout than forcing everything into one style.

Oil Changes and Fluid Service Workflow

Body shops do more fluid service than the industry gives them credit for. Every vehicle that comes out of a collision repair gets checked over, and plenty of them need coolant service, a transmission fluid top-off after a radiator or cooler replacement, or an oil change because it’s sat for three weeks with the front clip off. Setting up a bay for that work is a small investment that pays back constantly.

Put the drain and the fluid caddy on the same side as the tech’s tool cart, and put a bulk oil reel on a swing arm if you’re running any volume at all. The specific advantage of a two-post here is that the underside of the vehicle is entirely open — no runways, no crossmembers, no bridge jacks in the way of the drain plug or the filter housing. A tech can stand upright under the car, hit the plug, swing the caddy, and pull the filter without contorting. On a four-post the same job means reaching around runways or laying on a creeper. We’ve timed it in customer shops: a standard oil-and-filter service runs roughly a third faster on a two-post than on a four-post with the same tech. Multiply that by however many vehicles pass through your shop in a month and the equipment choice starts looking like a labor decision rather than a capital one. Installation, Anchoring, and Certification

We install every 2 post car lift we sell inside our service footprint, and for shops we strongly recommend it even if you have the equipment and the manpower. The reason isn’t the lifting — a forklift and three people can stand columns. The reason is the anchor layout, the shim-and-level step, and the initial lock synchronization, which are the three places DIY installs go wrong in ways that don’t show up for a year.

Anchors get torqued to the manufacturer’s spec with a calibrated wrench, and the columns get plumbed with shims until both carriages engage the same lock tooth at the same moment. If a column is out of plumb by even a small amount, the carriage binds slightly on every travel, wearing slide blocks unevenly and putting a side load on the cylinder rod seal. Get it right on day one and the lift runs for twenty years on routine maintenance. Get it wrong and you’re chasing symptoms forever. Budget Tiers and What Actually Drives Cost

Shops always want a number, so here’s the honest framing. Entry-level two-posts in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range from value brands land in the low four figures. Mid-tier units with better arm designs, thicker column steel, and real parts support run roughly double that. Commercial-grade 12,000 to 15,000 lb lifts from the brands we install for production shops sit in the upper single-digit thousands and climb from there with capacity and options. Installation, concrete work if needed, and accessories are separate line items.

What drives cost isn’t marketing. It’s steel thickness, cylinder quality, cable and sheave engineering, lock mechanism design, and whether the manufacturer will still have your part number in fifteen years. That last one is the whole ballgame in a production environment. A cheap lift that’s down for three weeks waiting on an overseas lock pawl costs more in lost bay hours than the price difference ever saved. We’ve pulled out plenty of five-year-old bargain units for exactly that reason, and the shops that replaced them with a commercial-grade 2 post car lift never asked us about the price again. Buy the lift your bay volume justifies, verify your slab, and spec the capacity for the worst vehicle you’ll ever see. Do those three things and the equipment decision is basically solved.
