An EV specialty shop owner along the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us last spring convinced his 2 post car lift warranty was worthless, because the manufacturer had just denied a power unit claim on a machine barely two years old. He wasn’t wrong to be frustrated — but he was wrong about why. The denial had nothing to do with the pump. It came down to a missing commissioning record and hydraulic fluid nobody could identify. We see this pattern constantly. Warranty coverage on lifting equipment is real, it’s usually generous, and it gets thrown away by paperwork and habits rather than by fine print. Here’s how coverage actually works, what the claim workflow looks like from our side of the desk, and the mistakes that cost shop owners money they didn’t have to spend.

Myth 1: “The Warranty Covers Everything For Five Years”

Almost every two-post warranty is tiered, and shop owners who don’t read the tiers get surprised. A typical commercial structure from Rotary or Challenger runs something like five years on the structural steel — columns, carriages, arms, welds — two to three years on the hydraulic cylinder, one to two years on the power unit assembly, and one year or less on wear items. The steel coverage is the headline number that gets printed in the brochure. The one-year items are the parts that actually fail first. That mismatch is where the frustration lives.

Wear items are almost never covered past the first year, and honestly they shouldn’t be. Lift pads, cable sheaves, safety latch springs, hydraulic hoses, arm restraint gears, and lock release cables all wear as a function of cycle count. A busy EV service bay running forty lift cycles a day is going to chew through pads and lock cables faster than a two-bay independent doing twelve. When a shop in the corridor tells us their arm restraint gear stripped at eighteen months, we can usually tell them the part cost is modest and the labor is the real expense — and that arguing coverage on it wastes more time than just replacing it. Knowing which category a failure falls into before you pick up the phone changes the whole conversation.

Myth 2: “Nobody Checks Whether It Was Installed Right”

They check. Every structural claim we’ve ever filed on a two-post has included a question about installation: who set it, what anchors were used, what the concrete slab thickness and cure age were, and whether the columns were shimmed plumb. Manufacturers ask because the overwhelming majority of column and carriage failures trace back to anchoring and slab issues rather than steel defects. A column that’s out of plumb loads the carriage rollers unevenly, and eighteen months later you’ve got a binding carriage and a warranty adjuster asking for photos of your shim stack.

Slab thickness is the single most common problem we run into. We’ve had homeowners and small shops tell us their concrete is “about five inches, maybe less,” which is a coin flip on whether the anchors will hold rated load. Most 10,000 lb two-post lifts specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete cured at least 28 days, and several require more. If the slab doesn’t meet spec and you anchor anyway, you have voided your structural coverage before the first vehicle goes up. When we install, we core-test or at minimum drill-test the slab and document it, then hand the customer a commissioning sheet with anchor torque values. That single sheet of paper has saved claims for us more than once.

Myth 3: “Any Hydraulic Fluid Is Fine”

This one costs people real money. Two-post power units are specified for a particular viscosity grade — usually ISO 32 or AW-32 hydraulic oil, sometimes ATF on older Rotary units. Pour in something heavier because it’s what was on the shelf, and the pump cavitates, runs hot, and dies early. When the pump comes apart and the fluid gets sampled or even just looked at, the claim is done. We have pulled brake fluid, chainsaw bar oil, and generic “tractor fluid” out of two-post reservoirs on service calls. None of that is covered.

The EV shop we mentioned earlier had a mystery blend in the tank because a part-time tech topped it off from an unlabeled jug. The pump seized, the manufacturer asked what fluid was in it, and nobody could answer. Denied. The fix is boring: keep one labeled pail of the correct fluid in the shop, write the spec on a sticker stuck to the power unit itself, and check the level monthly rather than only when the lift starts acting strange. Low fluid is the other half of this problem — a reservoir running near the bottom aerates, and aerated oil chews up seals and valves. Both failure modes are avoidable with about ninety seconds of attention a month.

How A 2 Post Car Lift Warranty Claim Actually Moves

Here’s the workflow from our side. The shop calls, we get the model and serial off the column data plate and the approximate install date. That serial is what unlocks everything — without it, we’re guessing at your build year and parts revision. Then we diagnose, because manufacturers do not accept “it won’t lift” as a claim description. They want a failed component identified. A motor that runs, fluid that’s full, no visible leak, and no lifting motion is almost always a lowering valve stuck open, a bypass in the pump, or a plugged suction screen — three different parts with three different coverage answers.

Once we’ve identified the part, we submit the serial, failure description, photos, and installation documentation. Approved claims ship the part; most manufacturers cover the component and not the labor to install it, which surprises people. Turnaround on a stocked part is usually days, and on an obsolete or built-to-order component it can be weeks. That’s the practical argument for buying from a distributor who stocks parts: if the covered part is backordered, we can often put a non-warranty equivalent in the bay today and sort out the credit later. A bay that’s down for three weeks costs far more than the part ever did, and we’d rather keep you working.

What EV Work Does To Your Coverage Assumptions

EV service changed how the equipment gets loaded, and the warranty language hasn’t fully caught up. Battery packs push curb weights up — plenty of electric crossovers and trucks land between 5,500 and 7,000 pounds, and full-size electric pickups go well past that. A 10,000 lb capacity two-post is still adequate on paper for most of those vehicles, but the weight distribution isn’t what the arms were designed around. Electric vehicles carry mass low and centered, which is actually kind to the structure, but they also concentrate load on specific pinch-weld points that manufacturers spec tightly.

The practical consequence is adapter and pad wear. Shops doing high-volume EV maintenance in the corridor go through stack adapters and truck adapters at a pace that surprises them, and none of that is covered past year one. Overloading is the other risk: put an 8,000 lb electric SUV plus a tech’s toolbox weight on a machine rated at 9,000 and you’re outside spec, which voids everything if something bends. We tell EV shops to spec 12,000 lb capacity when the budget allows, not because the extra capacity gets used daily but because the margin keeps you comfortably inside the rated envelope and inside your coverage. Annual Inspection: The Requirement Most Shops Skip

Nearly every commercial lift warranty conditions coverage on documented periodic inspection, and ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards call for annual inspection by a qualified inspector. Most independent shops we visit have never had one. When a structural claim goes to an adjuster and there’s no inspection history, the claim gets harder — not automatically denied, but harder. And the inspection itself catches the things that turn into claims: frayed lock release cables, worn arm restraint teeth, anchor bolts that have loosened, a carriage slide block that’s down to nothing.

We do these inspections across Iowa and the surrounding states, and the findings are remarkably consistent. Loose anchors show up on maybe a third of the lifts we look at. Missing or illegible capacity labels and safety instructions show up nearly as often, which is its own OSHA problem separate from warranty. Lock mechanisms that don’t engage on every notch are the finding that scares us most, because that’s the difference between a controlled failure and a car on the floor. Budget an annual inspection the way you budget a fire extinguisher check — it’s cheap, it’s fast, and it produces the paper trail that makes a warranty conversation go your way. Buying Decisions That Protect Your 2 Post Car Lift Warranty

The purchase itself determines how easy your coverage is to use. Buying gray-market or secondhand equipment usually means no transferable warranty at all, and it often means parts that are hard to source. We get calls monthly from people who bought a used two-post off a marketplace listing, discovered the manufacturer no longer supports that build, and now need a cylinder nobody stocks. Sometimes we can help with a cross-reference; sometimes the honest answer is that the lift isn’t worth restoring. Baseplate versus overhead matters too, and not just for ceiling clearance. Shops with 11 to 12 foot ceilings usually need a baseplate model, and shops working tall vans or lifted trucks under a 14 foot ceiling can go overhead. Getting that wrong leads to modifications, and modifications void coverage faster than anything else on this list. Same goes for cutting arms, drilling columns for shelving, or splicing the power unit into a different voltage than it was built for. Pick the configuration that fits the building, buy from someone who stocks the parts, keep the commissioning sheet and inspection records in a folder, and use the specified fluid.
