A third-generation family garage on the west side of West Des Moines called us last spring because their oldest bay had become the differential bay by default, and the drive-on ramps they were using made a simple 2 post car lift look like a luxury they should have bought fifteen years ago. Diff and transfer case fluid work is knuckle-and-forearm work — you need the vehicle at chest height, both wheels free, and enough room under the rear axle to catch a pan of gear oil without lying in it. That is the exact job a two-post is built for. We walked their bay with a tape measure, checked the slab, and put together a package they financed over 36 months. Why Differential Work Rewards a Two-Post Over a Four-Post

Gear oil service sounds trivial until you do six of them in a week. You are working at the pumpkin, reaching up and behind, and you need the vehicle high enough that your shoulders are not at axle height. On a four-post the wheels sit on runways, which is fine for fluid drop and fill on a solid rear axle, but the moment the job grows — a leaking pinion seal, a wheel bearing, an axle shaft that needs to come out — the runways are in your way. Wheels-free work is the whole point, and a two-post gives it to you every single time without a rolling jack, without repositioning, without a second thought.

The shop in West Des Moines had been splitting diff work between a floor jack and a set of tall stands. That works, and their grandfather did it that way for thirty years, but it is slow and it is hard on a tech’s back. Once we ran the numbers on labor hours saved per month, the lift stopped looking like a purchase and started looking like a tool that pays for itself. We told them what we tell everybody: a two-post is the highest-utilization lift in almost any general repair shop. It handles diff service, brakes, exhaust, suspension, transmissions and half the electrical diagnosis you will ever do. A four-post is a better alignment rack and a better storage device. For hands-on axle and driveline work, the two-post wins.

The Real Dimensions: Bay Width, Column Spacing, Drive-Through

Their bay measured 21 feet wide and 26 feet deep with a 12-foot ceiling and a 10-foot overhead door. That is a normal Iowa shop bay and it is workable, but the numbers matter. A typical 10,000 lb clearfloor two-post needs roughly 12 feet of overall width including columns and the floor plate or overhead beam, with drive-through clearance somewhere between 92 and 106 inches depending on the model and whether the top beam is expandable. On an asymmetric configuration you get a wider door-opening swing at the cost of a slightly tighter approach for long-wheelbase vehicles.

Ceiling height is where people get burned. A clearfloor overhead-beam design usually wants 12 feet minimum, and the shutoff bar hangs below that beam. We measured their true ceiling at 11 feet 9 inches at the low joist, which pushed us toward a baseplate style — the same call we made for a customer in North Dakota who had a hard 139-inch ceiling limit and could not run an overhead. Baseplate lifts move the hydraulic and equalizer lines across the floor in a low cover, so you trade a little floor smoothness for the ability to lift a tall truck to full height. For a shop doing differential and driveline work under 6,000 lb vehicles all day, baseplate is not a compromise at all. We also confirmed the door swing cleared the driver-side column by 14 inches with the arms swung in.

Concrete: What We Actually Test Before Anchoring

Every two-post anchors into concrete, and concrete is the single most common reason an install turns into a two-visit job. The manufacturers publish minimums — commonly 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI or better for a 10,000 lb unit, more for higher capacities — and those minimums assume the slab is continuous, cured, and not sitting on soft fill. We drill a small test hole and measure. On the West Des Moines job the slab came back at 5.5 inches with no rebar we hit, which was plenty.

We have seen the other side of this too. A customer in northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less,” which in our experience usually means four. When the number comes back short, the fix is a cutout and pour: saw a pad at each column footprint, dig out the fill, tie in rebar, and pour 3,500 PSI concrete at least 8 inches deep and 4 feet square. Cure a minimum of 28 days before torquing anchors. Nobody wants to hear that, but the alternative is anchor pullout under load, and there is no version of that story that ends well. We also look for control joints — you do not want a column footprint straddling one — and for any radiant tubing or conduit in the slab. A concrete scan costs a fraction of a repour.

Choosing Capacity: 9,000, 10,000 or 12,000 lb

The shop’s heaviest regular customer vehicle was a three-quarter-ton pickup around 7,800 lb loaded. Their instinct was to buy 9,000 lb and save money. We pushed them to 10,000, and we would push you the same way. Capacity is not just about the sticker weight — it is about arm reach, pad height range, column strength and how the lift feels at year eight instead of year one. A 10,000 lb 2 post car lift with a 12-foot column and telescoping arms will handle everything from a Civic to an F-250 without arguing.

If your shop sees one-tons, duallies, or Sprinter and Transit vans regularly, jump to 12,000 or 15,000. The taller columns give you more lift height for the same rise, and the wider arm spread reaches lifting points on long-wheelbase chassis that a 9,000 lb unit simply cannot get to safely. On the other end, if you are a hobbyist working on one classic and a daily driver, a 9,000 lb baseplate unit is honest value — that is roughly what a customer in upstate New York needed for restoration work in a 14-foot barn bay. But for a commercial shop billing hours, the gap between 9,000 and 10,000 is small and the difference in usable life is not. Financing Terms and Payment Schedule, Plainly Stated

Here is the part most equipment sites bury. A commercial-grade two-post from Rotary or Challenger, installed, sits in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on capacity and configuration. Home-grade BendPak and Atlas units land lower. Most shops we work with do not write a check for the whole thing — they finance through an equipment lease or an installment plan, typically 24, 36, 48 or 60 months.

The structure we see most often on a 2 post car lift purchase is a small documentation fee up front, first payment at delivery, then level monthly payments. A 36-month term on a 10,000 lb installed package usually lands in a monthly figure comparable to two or three billed labor hours — which is the whole argument. If the lift adds five hours of billable capacity a month, it pays for itself and then some. Section 179 depreciation is worth a conversation with your accountant; many of our shop customers write the full purchase off in the year they place it in service, which changes the real cost meaningfully. Terms vary by credit profile, and we do not pretend otherwise. What we do promise is that we will quote the installed number — lift, freight, install labor, and any concrete work — before you sign anything, so the payment schedule you approve is the payment schedule you get. No surprise adders after the truck shows up.

Installation Day: What Two Techs and Six Hours Look Like

A standard two-post install in a prepped bay runs about five to seven hours with two techs. We lay out the column footprints with a chalk line and confirm squareness diagonally, drill the anchor holes with a rotary hammer, vacuum them clean, set the wedge anchors, and torque to spec — that torque number is not a suggestion. Columns get shimmed plumb, and we check plumb on both axes before final torque because a column that leans a quarter inch at the base leans an inch and a half at the top.

Then the hydraulics: power unit mounted, lines run and routed, cylinders bled, equalizer cables tensioned and matched. Cable tension is the most-skipped step on DIY installs and it is why so many lifts arrive at our shop with one side sitting low. After that we cycle the lift a dozen times empty, check the safety locks engage on every notch on both columns, then load-test with a vehicle. We walk the shop owner through daily and monthly checks, show them the lock release, and leave the manual on the wall. The West Des Moines shop was doing diff service on it that same afternoon. Keeping It Alive: Service Intervals and the Calls We Get

A well-installed two-post is a twenty-year machine, and the maintenance is genuinely simple. Grease the arm pivots and the column slide blocks, check equalizer cable tension quarterly, inspect the cables for broken strands and the arm restraints for wear, keep the reservoir topped with the correct hydraulic fluid, and get an annual inspection. That is it. The lifts that die early are the ones nobody looked at.

The most common failure call we field sounds like this: a Challenger two-post where the motor runs, there is fluid in the reservoir, nothing is leaking, and the carriages will not rise. Nine times out of ten that is air in the system, a stuck check valve, or a lowering valve that is not fully seating — not a dead pump. We can usually talk a shop owner through the diagnosis on the phone in ten minutes and ship the valve or seal kit the same day.
