A crew chief for a dirt-track team out near Marion called us in February with a problem that had nothing to do with horsepower: his 2 post car lift had a slow-drifting column and he was three weeks from the first points race with alignment work still on the list. He wanted to know two things — was the drift a warranty item, and if he had to replace the whole unit, what should he buy so this didn’t happen again mid-season. Those two questions are more connected than most buyers realize. The configuration you pick determines which parts wear first, which parts are covered, and how fast a claim gets settled. Start With Budget, Because Budget Decides Everything Downstream
We ask teams for a number before we ask for a ceiling height. Not because money matters more than fit, but because the honest budget eliminates two-thirds of the catalog immediately and keeps the conversation from wandering. Under the entry tier — think low four figures — you are shopping baseplate units with narrower columns, thinner carriage plates, and one- or two-year coverage on structure. In the mid tier you get clearfloor overhead designs, better arm geometry, and three-to-five-year structural terms. At the top you get Rotary and Challenger commercial iron with the longest structural warranties in the business and a parts pipeline that actually exists ten years from now.
For a race team the mid tier is usually the sweet spot, and here’s why: you are not lifting for eight hours a day like a dealership, but the lifts you own get abused in bursts. Twelve cycles on a Thursday night before a Friday haul, then nothing for two weeks. That duty pattern punishes cheap cylinders and cheap cables far more than steady use does, because seals dry out and cables sit under static load. Spending mid-tier money on a two-post buys you a cylinder and cable set rated for the abuse, and it buys you a warranty document that a manufacturer will actually honor without arguing about “commercial use in a residential unit.” That single clause has cost more teams more money than any other line in the fine print.
Ceiling, Door, and Concrete: The Three Hard Limits
Once we have a budget we go to the shop dimensions, and we go in a fixed order. Ceiling first. A clearfloor overhead two-post needs roughly 12 feet minimum for a 10,000 lb unit, and the overhead beam is the tallest point — not the columns. If you are at 11 feet or under, or you have a 139-inch max like a customer we quoted in North Dakota last year, you are shopping baseplate. Baseplate designs run the equalization cables and hoses through a floor-mounted plate, which frees the ceiling entirely but leaves you stepping over a plate for the life of the shop.
Door height matters second, and it catches race teams specifically because you’re rolling trailers and haulers through. A 16-foot door with a 12-foot ceiling means the columns clear the opening but the overhead beam may not clear a lifted vehicle on the way out. Third is concrete. Manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and we want more than that when the number is a guess. “About five inches, maybe less” is a phrase we hear constantly, and it’s the phrase that turns into a core sample or a cut-and-pour pad. If the slab fails, the anchors move, the columns rack, and the manufacturer denies the claim — because inadequate foundation is an exclusion in every warranty we have ever read. Spend the money on concrete verification before you spend it on the lift.
Symmetric or Asymmetric: The Alignment Work Question
For a team doing alignment work, arm configuration is not a preference — it changes what you can measure. Symmetric two-posts put the columns directly across from each other and split the vehicle roughly 50/50, which centers the mass and gives you even loading. Asymmetric rotates the columns and moves the arms so the vehicle sits back about 30/70, giving the driver door room to open. Nice in a customer-facing shop. Less relevant when the car has no door and a five-point harness.
What we push race teams toward is a symmetric unit with a wide, expandable top beam and telescoping arms with drop-end pad options. Symmetric loading keeps the chassis square while you’re chasing camber and toe on a car with almost no suspension travel, and it lets you swing a set of turnplates or slip plates under the tires without the arms fighting you. Drop-end arms get pad height down to around three and a half inches, which matters enormously on a lowered street-stock or a modified with a full belly pan. We had a team in eastern Iowa buy an asymmetric because it was in stock, then spend the next season shimming and re-blocking every time they set an alignment. They ended up selling it. Configuration is cheaper to get right the first time than to fix later, and a well-chosen 2 post car lift will outlive three or four sets of tooling.
What a 2 Post Car Lift Warranty Actually Covers
Warranty language on two-post lifts breaks into three buckets, and buyers routinely assume all three are the same length. Structure — columns, carriages, arms, top beam — usually carries the longest term, five years on commercial-grade units from the brands we stock, sometimes longer. Hydraulic and mechanical components — cylinders, power units, locks, sheaves — typically get one to two years. Wear items — cables, pads, slider blocks, hoses, seals — get either 90 days or nothing at all, because they are consumables by definition.
That structure explains the two calls we get most often. Call one: “the motor runs, there’s fluid, nothing’s leaking, and it won’t lift.” That’s almost always a hydraulic component — a failed pump cartridge, a stuck check valve, or air trapped in the cylinder — and whether it’s covered depends entirely on whether you’re inside the one-to-two-year window. Call two: “one column drifts down overnight.” That’s a cylinder seal or a lowering valve, same bucket. Neither is a structural claim, so the five-year number on the brochure doesn’t help. The practical takeaway: when you compare quotes on a two-post, compare the hydraulic term, not the headline structural term. A unit with three years on the power unit is worth real money over one with twelve months, and it is the number sales sheets bury deepest.
How a Claim Actually Moves — Step by Step
Here is the workflow, honestly, without the marketing gloss. Step one, you call us and describe the symptom. We ask for the serial plate photo, the install date, and a short video of the failure if you can get one. Step two, we diagnose remotely or send a tech. Roughly half the calls we take resolve without a part — air in the system, a bad anchor torque, a lock dog out of adjustment, a low-voltage supply making the motor sound healthy while it starves. Step three, if a component failed, we file with the manufacturer using the serial and the install documentation.
Step four is where teams get frustrated, so plan for it. Manufacturers ship the replacement part; they generally do not pay the labor to install it unless the unit is inside the first year and the installation was done by an authorized installer. If you bought a two-post online, uncrated it yourself, and anchored it yourself, expect the labor conversation to go badly. That’s not us being difficult — it’s the manufacturer protecting themselves against unknown installs. The single best thing a race team can do to make future claims painless is keep a folder: purchase invoice, install date, anchor torque values, annual inspection records, and dates of every cable and pad replacement. We have settled claims in four days with that folder and watched identical claims drag six weeks without it. A 2 post car lift is a ten-to-twenty-year asset and the paperwork is part of the asset.
The Maintenance That Keeps Coverage Alive
Every warranty we have read includes some version of “failure due to lack of maintenance is excluded.” On a two-post that language points at four specific things. Equalization cables need tension checked and adjusted — loose cables let carriages run out of level, which side-loads the columns and chews slider blocks. Locks need to be exercised and the release mechanism kept free; a lock that doesn’t engage cleanly is both a safety issue and a claim denial waiting to happen. Fluid needs to be at level and clean, and it needs to be the right fluid, not whatever was on the shelf. Anchors need re-torque, especially in the first six months.
ANSI/ALI guidance calls for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and for a race team that inspection is the cheapest insurance on the property. The failures we find most often are boring: cables at the sheave showing broken strands, arm restraint gears worn round, pads compressed to nothing so the vehicle sits on steel. All four are wear items, all four are on you, and all four cause secondary failures that manufacturers will absolutely try to classify as abuse. Replace a set of cables at year six and you’re spending a few hundred dollars. Let them fail and you’re replacing a cylinder, a carriage, and possibly a car.
Buying, Installing, and Who to Call in Marion

Unknown concrete sends you to a core sample before anything else. And the warranty column you should actually compare is the hydraulic term, not the structural headline. Work that tree in order and you land on one or two models, not forty.
On install — some buyers genuinely don’t need us. But understand the tradeoff: self-install shifts labor risk and some warranty leverage onto you.
