Last fall we surveyed and installed one for a builder who had been doing coilover swaps, long-travel arms, and shock rebuilds on ramps and jack stands in a 24-by-32 shop. He was tired of crawling. What follows is the actual sequence we walked through with him — the site survey, the concrete question, the ceiling math, the power drop, and the arm configuration that made suspension work practical instead of miserable. Why Off-Road Builds Change the Lift Conversation
Most lift buyers describe a car and a capacity and stop there. Off-road builders have a different problem set. A lifted Tacoma or a 4Runner on 35s already sits high, so the vehicle’s frame is farther off the ground before the arms ever touch it. That means overall rise matters less than you would think and drive-under clearance matters more. It also means the pad height at its lowest setting has to be tall enough to reach a lifted frame rail without stacking three adapters, which is where cheap import arms start to feel sketchy.
The West Des Moines shop we worked with builds mid-travel front ends and swaps rear shock packs, so the vehicle spends long stretches at working height with the suspension unloaded and hanging. That is a very different duty cycle than a quick oil change. We steered him toward a heavier column set and a symmetric arm layout so the truck sits centered and stable while wheels come off. The takeaway: tell whoever you are buying from what you actually do, not just what you drive. The right specification for a builder doing 40-hour projects is not the same as a lube-rack machine.
The Site Survey: What We Measure Before Quoting
We do not quote a lift off a phone call alone if we can help it. On this job the survey took about forty minutes and covered six things: usable ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, bay width from wall to wall, door header height, concrete thickness and age, panel capacity and available breaker space, and floor slope. Every one of those has bitten somebody who skipped it. The most common surprise in Iowa shops is a sprinkler line, gas heater, or garage door track hanging six to ten inches below the true ceiling.
His measured height was 12 feet 4 inches to the joists but only 11 feet 2 inches under the heater. That single number decided the whole configuration. We also chalked the column locations and had him park his truck and open both doors, because a 2 post car lift that fits on paper can still leave you squeezing past a fender to get to the toolbox. Ten minutes of chalk saved a redo. We photograph everything, mark the anchor pattern, and note where the power feed will run so the electrician is not guessing on install day.
Concrete: The Number That Ends More Projects Than Price
Concrete is where enthusiasm meets reality. Manufacturers generally want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb two-post, and many spec closer to four and a quarter or more depending on anchor embedment. We routinely talk to folks in Missouri, North Dakota, and rural Iowa who have five inches in the middle of the slab and three at the edges because the pour was done by whoever had the truck that day.
On the West Des Moines job we core-drilled two test holes near the planned column bases. We got 5.5 inches of clean, cured slab with no vapor barrier voids underneath — better than expected. Where that test comes back thin, the fix is a pair of engineered pads: saw-cut a section, dig, and pour footings sized to the manufacturer’s drawing. It is not cheap, but it is far cheaper than an anchor pulling under load with a truck in the air. We will always tell you when a slab is not ready, even when it kills the sale. A 2 post car lift is only as safe as the four square feet of concrete under each column, and no bolt torque spec compensates for a bad pour.
Clearfloor vs. Baseplate for a Suspension Shop
This is the fork in the road for almost every buyer. A clearfloor design runs the equalization cables and hoses through the overhead beam, giving you a completely open floor. A baseplate design routes them through a low channel at floor level, which lets the columns stand alone with no overhead structure at all. For low-ceiling buildings, baseplate is often the only option — we quote them constantly for garages under about eleven feet.
For suspension and shock work, though, we lean clearfloor when the ceiling allows. Rolling a transmission jack, a coil spring compressor cart, or a floor jack straight across the bay without hopping a bump matters when you do it fifty times a day. The overhead bar also gives you a natural shutoff for tall trucks. His 11-foot-2 obstruction was tight but workable with a clearfloor unit rated for that installed height, so that is what we set. If your ceiling had been ten feet, we would have gone baseplate without hesitation and just accepted the floor channel. Neither choice is wrong; the building decides. Arms, Adapters, and Getting Under a Lifted Truck
Arm geometry is where a 2 post car lift either works for off-road builds or fights you. Three-stage front arms reach farther for long-wheelbase pickups; drop-end or telescoping-screw pads let you get low on a unibody and tall on a lifted frame. We spec’d a set of tall stack adapters plus a truck adapter kit on this install, and honestly the adapter kit was one of the smartest few hundred dollars he spent.
What builders underestimate is how much time gets lost hunting for the right pad. If you work on the same four platforms, buy the adapters for those platforms once and hang them on the column. We also went through pickup point identification with him on his own truck, because aftermarket sliders and skid plates change where you can safely set an arm. Setting a pad on a rock slider bracket instead of the pinch weld or frame boxing is how vehicles get bent. Finally, we torqued and re-checked all arm restraint gear, because with a truck at working height and a 200 lb axle assembly being wrestled loose, the last thing you want is an arm swinging. Small details, big consequences.
Power, Air, and the Boring Infrastructure Nobody Budgets For
Every install we do has a moment where somebody realizes the power situation is not what they assumed. Most single-phase two-post power units run 208-240V single phase and want a dedicated 20 or 30 amp circuit depending on motor size. If your shop has a 100 amp panel already feeding a compressor, a welder, and a heater, you may need a subpanel or a load calculation before an inspector signs off. We are not electricians, but we tell you exactly what the unit needs so your electrician quotes it right the first time.
Air is the other one. Most two-post lifts use a shot of shop air to release the mechanical safety locks — usually a small line teed off your existing system. If you do not have air near the column, plan the run before the lift goes in, not after. On this job we routed both power and a quarter-inch air line along the same wall in conduit and strut, which took an extra hour and looked ten times better than a cord across the floor. The other item people forget is fluid: a new power unit needs hydraulic oil, typically AW-32 or a compatible ATF depending on the manufacturer, and it does not ship with the lift.
Install Day, Commissioning, and What Happens After
Install on a straightforward two-post in a prepped building is usually a single day for our crew. We set and plumb the columns, drill and set anchors to the manufacturer’s embedment and torque spec, hang the overhead assembly, route cables and hoses, fill and bleed the power unit, then run the lift through its full travel several times empty. After that we equalize the carriages, verify the safety locks engage on every notch, and cycle it with a vehicle at partial and full height.
Then we do the part that matters most: we teach whoever is going to use it. Where the lock release is, what the overhead shutoff does, how to spot a frayed cable, and what the daily and monthly checks are. We left a laminated card on the column and logged the anchor torque values. Six months later he sent us a photo of a long-travel front end hanging in the air and said the shop finally felt like a real shop. That is the whole point.
