If you run a small fleet out of a shop in Ames and you’re pricing a 2 post car lift, the first real decision isn’t brand or capacity — it’s whether the crossbar runs over the top of the vehicle or across the floor between the columns. We install both configurations across central Iowa every month, and we’ve watched plenty of owners pick the wrong one because a salesperson never asked about their ceiling, their door header, or what they actually drive through the bay. A fleet of service vans, plow trucks, and a couple of dually pickups puts different demands on a lift than a two-bay repair shop turning brake jobs. Here’s the honest side-by-side, based on what we see in the field.

What Actually Separates the Two Configurations

An overhead lift carries the equalizer cables and hydraulic hose through a crossbeam that spans the top of the columns, usually somewhere between 11 and 12 feet off the floor depending on the model and how the beam is set. That beam also carries the automatic shutoff bar that stops the lift before a tall roof contacts it. A baseplate design routes those same cables and lines through a low channel bolted to the concrete between the posts, which frees the airspace above the vehicle entirely.

The trade is straightforward. Overhead gives you a clean floor and, for most technicians, a more comfortable working area under the car. Baseplate gives you unlimited overhead clearance but puts a low crossover in the drive-through path. On paper that crossover is only two or three inches tall, and every manufacturer builds a ramp into it. In practice, we’ve had shops tell us they trip over it, that a floor jack catches on it, and that low-clearance vehicles scrape. We’ve also had shops tell us they forgot it was there within a week. The honest answer is that it depends on your traffic and your habits, not on which brochure you read. When a fleet operator calls us about a 2 post car lift, the crossover question is usually the second thing we talk about after ceiling height.

Ceiling Height Is the Deciding Factor More Often Than Not

We took a call from a small delivery operation whose building topped out at a hair under 139 inches — call it 11 feet 7. They wanted a clear-floor overhead model, and the number looked close enough on paper. It wasn’t. Once you account for the beam depth, the shutoff bar hanging below it, and the fact that a cargo van roof is already over seven feet, that shop was going to be limited to lifting maybe 30 inches before something touched. That’s not a lift, that’s a stool.

Our rule of thumb: a standard overhead configuration wants 12 feet of true clear height, measured to the lowest obstruction — not to the peak of the truss, not to the underside of a light fixture you plan to move someday. If you have 12 feet or better and nothing hanging in the way, overhead is usually the better daily-driver setup. Below 12 feet, baseplate stops being a compromise and starts being the correct engineering choice. Some manufacturers offer low-ceiling adapters and shortened columns for overhead frames, and those work, but they cut your maximum rise. For a fleet that services tall vans and box trucks, a baseplate 2 post car lift with full column travel will always beat a shortened overhead unit. Measure before you buy. Measure twice if the building is older than you are.

Choosing Between Overhead and Baseplate for a Small Fleet

Fleet work is different from retail service work, and it changes the calculus. A retail shop cycles ten or fifteen unrelated vehicles a day; a fleet shop might see the same six trucks over and over, plus a handful of company cars. That repetition means you can spec around known dimensions instead of guessing at every possible customer vehicle.

If your heaviest unit is a three-quarter-ton pickup at around 7,000 pounds, a 10,000 lb capacity machine covers you with margin. If you’re running duallys, service bodies with tool boxes and a welder, or anything with a utility bed, jump to 12,000 or 15,000. We tell people to spec to the heaviest vehicle they’ll ever own, not the heaviest they own today. On the layout side, fleets tend to favor overhead when the ceiling allows, because technicians roll transmission jacks, oil drains, and creeper carts across that bay constantly and a baseplate crossover becomes a daily annoyance. But if you’re storing seasonal equipment overhead, running a jib crane, or working under a low mezzanine, baseplate wins outright. There is no universally correct answer here — there’s only the answer that matches your building. We’ve specced both configurations into shops on the same block in Ames.

Concrete, Anchoring, and the Part Nobody Wants to Hear

Every two post design — overhead or baseplate — transfers its entire load into the floor through the column base plates. That means concrete depth and cure strength matter more than the brand badge on the column. Most manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for 10,000 lb models, and many want more for higher capacities. A man in northern Missouri called us about a 10,000 lb unit and told us straight out that his slab was “about five inches, maybe less.” That honesty saved him money, because we could tell him upfront what a saw-cut-and-pour footing pad would cost instead of letting him find out after delivery.

Baseplate designs actually have a small advantage here in one specific way: the base channel ties the two columns together mechanically, which shares some of the tipping moment between them. Overhead designs tie the columns together at the top through the beam, which works fine but puts more of the peak stress at the anchor bolts during off-center loads. Neither is unsafe when installed correctly on proper concrete. Both are dangerous on a cracked, thin, or uncured slab. If you don’t know your slab depth, we can core-test it or you can drill a small hole in an out-of-the-way spot and measure. Do not guess. A dropped vehicle is not a warranty claim, it’s a lawsuit.

Arm Geometry, Symmetric vs Asymmetric, and Door Swing

Once you’ve settled on overhead or baseplate, arm configuration is the next decision, and it’s one people skip. Symmetric models set the columns directly across from each other and place the vehicle’s center of gravity between them, with equal-length arms front and rear. Asymmetric models rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use short front arms and long rear arms, which shifts the vehicle rearward so the driver’s door clears the column. If your fleet techs are climbing in and out of cabs to release parking brakes or pull codes, asymmetric saves a lot of swearing.

The catch is that asymmetric geometry assumes a certain vehicle balance. Load a long-wheelbase van or a truck with a heavy rear service body onto an asymmetric machine and you can end up with poor weight distribution. Many current models are marketed as versymmetric or adjustable — the arms and column rotation let you run either way. Those are genuinely useful for mixed fleets. We also look at pad reach: telescoping three-stage arms with screw-up pads and stackable adapters let you reach frame rails on a body-on-frame truck and pinch welds on a compact car with the same equipment. What Installation Actually Involves in Central Iowa

People assume the install is the easy part. It’s the part where problems surface. A typical two post installation runs most of a day for a two-person crew: layout and chalk lines, drilling anchor holes, setting and shimming columns to plumb, running the equalizer cables or the baseplate channel, mounting the power unit, filling and bleeding hydraulics, wiring, then cycling and testing. Shimming is where the craftsmanship lives — a column that’s out of plumb by a small amount will wear carriage slide blocks unevenly and eventually make noise you’ll chase for years.

Electrical is the item that delays the most jobs. Most single-phase power units in this class want a dedicated 220V, 30-amp circuit. If your shop only has 110V at the wall, budget for an electrician before delivery day, not after. Three-phase units are common in commercial buildings and are generally cheaper to run, but confirm what your service actually is instead of assuming. We also check door header clearance for overhead models — that beam can clear your ceiling and still block your overhead door track. Some customers handle installation themselves, and we’re fine with that; we’ve shipped plenty of units to people with a forklift and a weekend. But we’ll always say the same thing: read the manufacturer’s torque specs on the anchors and don’t skip the drop test.

Budget, Lead Time, and What We’d Tell a Neighbor

Entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 lb models from the value brands land in the low-to-mid four figures. Mid-tier commercial units with better carriage bearings, thicker steel, and real parts support run substantially higher. Premium American-built machines from Rotary and Challenger sit above that, and for a shop that lifts vehicles forty times a day, the difference pays for itself in downtime you never experience. Baseplate and overhead versions of the same model typically price within a few hundred dollars of each other, so configuration should be driven by your building, not your budget.

What we’d tell a neighbor: buy the capacity you’ll need in five years, buy from a brand that still stocks cables and cylinders in a decade, and let your ceiling pick your configuration. If you have the height, take the overhead. If you don’t, take the baseplate and stop worrying about it — thousands of shops run baseplate machines every day without incident.
