Start With the Budget Tier, Not the Brochure

Every decision tree has to start somewhere, and for most restoration shops it starts with money. We break two-post equipment into three honest tiers. The entry tier is a 9,000 to 10,000 lb import-built unit — usually a baseplate or basic clear-floor model, adequate for a hobby shop or a one-bay operation that lifts a few cars a week. The middle tier is where most working restoration shops land: a well-built 10,000 lb clear-floor unit from a name you’ll still be able to buy parts for in fifteen years. The top tier is Rotary or Challenger commercial iron, the stuff that runs eight hours a day in a dealership and doesn’t blink.

We had a restoration guy in southeast Iowa tell us flat out he didn’t want to spend ten grand. Fair enough. But he was also a high-mileage driver who worked on his own vehicles constantly, and the cheapest option on the market wasn’t going to survive that. We put him in the middle tier and he’s still running it years later. The math that matters isn’t the sticker — it’s cost per year over the life of the equipment plus the price of downtime when something fails. A cheap cylinder that leaks after eighteen months costs you two days of shop time and a service call. Spend where it counts and skip the chrome.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric: The Question Nobody Explains Well

Here’s the part of the decision tree that trips up more restoration shops than any other. A symmetric lift has columns that face each other straight on, with four arms of roughly equal length. The vehicle sits centered between the posts, weight split about 50/50, and the doors open into the columns. An asymmetric lift rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and pairs short front arms with long rear arms, so the car sits back in the bay — about 30 percent of the vehicle ahead of the posts, 70 percent behind. That lets the driver’s door swing clear of the column.

For restoration work, this matters more than it does for a general repair shop. If you’re mostly working on full-frame classics, trucks, and long-wheelbase sedans, symmetric arms give you better pickup point access and a more balanced load. If your floor is full of unibody muscle cars and you’re constantly climbing in and out of the car during a build, asymmetric buys you door clearance you’ll appreciate every single day. Plenty of modern units are versymmetric — an adjustable or expandable top beam and telescoping arms that let you run either configuration depending on what’s in the bay. That’s typically the right answer for a shop that sees everything from a Model A to a dually. Tell us what’s on your floor and we’ll tell you honestly which way to go.

Suspension and Shock Work Demands Real Arm Reach

Suspension jobs are where a poorly specced lift shows its weakness. When you’re pulling coil springs, replacing shocks, swapping bushings, or dropping a rear axle, you need the arms out of your way and you need stable pickup points that aren’t anywhere near the components you’re removing. On a lot of older restoration projects the factory lift points are rusted, modified, or gone entirely, so you’re setting pads on frame rails and reinforced pinch weld areas that may not be where the manufacturer intended.

That’s why we push telescoping arms with a wide adjustment range and screw pads with real height travel. Double-telescoping screw pads let you reach up into a deep rocker or down to a low frame rail without stacking a pile of blocks. Drop-end arms — arms that step down at the pad end — get you under low classics and lowered street rods that would otherwise high-center on a standard arm. On a restoration build where the body is off, or the interior is stripped and the weight balance is nothing like factory, arm flexibility isn’t a luxury. We’ve seen shops fight a mismatched lift for years because they bought on price and got fixed-length arms. Order the arm package that matches the work, not the one that comes standard in the box.

Ceiling Height and Overhead vs Baseplate

Measure your ceiling before you shop. Not the peak — the lowest obstruction across the bay, including light fixtures, garage door tracks, heaters, and any loft or mezzanine. A clear-floor overhead unit puts the equalization cables and the shutoff bar in a crossbeam up top, which keeps the floor completely open. Those typically want 12 feet minimum, and 13 to 14 is comfortable. A baseplate unit routes everything through a low channel across the floor, which means you can install it under a 10-foot ceiling — the tradeoff is a bump you’ll roll a jack over a thousand times a year.

We worked with a customer in a shop with a 16-foot door but a loft on one side and a hard wall on the other. He had the height for overhead but not the side clearance for a standard bay layout, so we walked the bay dimensions with him before anything shipped. Another had a hard 139-inch maximum and had to go baseplate — no way around it. Neither of those is a bad outcome; they’re just constraints. A restoration shop with a 14-foot ceiling should almost always take the clear-floor overhead configuration, because you’ll be rolling transmission jacks, engine hoists, and parts carts through that bay constantly. Know your number before you pick a model.

Concrete: The Foundation Everyone Skips

We won’t set anchors in concrete we don’t trust, and neither should you. Most two-post manufacturers call for a minimum of 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with the anchor location a safe distance from any expansion joint or slab edge. Older Iowa shop floors are all over the map. We’ve cored slabs that measured a nominal four inches and came back at three and a half in the middle of the bay. We’ve also found rebar exactly where an anchor needed to go.

If you’re unsure, drill a test hole or core a plug. It costs an afternoon and saves you from the worst outcome in this business — a column that walks under load. When the existing slab doesn’t make the grade, the fix is straightforward: cut out a pad section under each column, dig it deeper, tie in rebar, and pour a proper footing. Typically that’s a 4×4 or 5×5 foot pad at 8 to 12 inches deep per column. Yes, it’s a weekend and some concrete money. It’s also the difference between a lift you trust with a customer’s numbers-matching restoration on it and one you don’t. Capacity, Power, and the Rest of the Spec Sheet

Capacity is usually the easiest branch of the tree. Most restoration shops are lifting vehicles well under 6,000 pounds, so a 10,000 lb unit has plenty of margin. If you regularly work on three-quarter-ton trucks, big-block wagons, or you’re pulling a full drivetrain and setting a body back on a chassis, step up to 12,000 or 15,000. Capacity headroom costs less than you’d think and it buys you confidence. We generally tell people not to buy a 9,000 lb unit unless the ceiling or the budget forces it.

Power is next. Most units ship with a 220V single-phase motor, which means a dedicated circuit and probably an electrician. Some shops have three-phase available and should use it. Check that before delivery day, because nothing stalls an install like discovering the panel is full. Then the details: single-point safety release beats reaching around both columns; padded overhead shutoff bars save windshields; and single-piece columns are stiffer than welded sections. Ask about arm restraints, pad kits, and truck adapters up front. Installation, Delivery, and What Happens After

A two-post ships as a heavy freight pallet — two columns, a carton of arms, a power unit, and hardware. Total weight is usually 1,500 to 2,500 pounds. If you have a forklift or a skid steer with forks, you can unload it yourself; plenty of shops do. If you don’t, tell us before the truck rolls, because a liftgate isn’t going to handle a column. Some customers install their own and do a fine job. Others want us to set it, plumb it, wire it, anchor it, and certify it. Both are legitimate paths and we’ll support either.

What we’d ask you not to skip is the follow-through. A 2 post car lift wants an annual inspection: cables checked for broken strands and correct tension, safety locks cycled at every position, arm restraint pins verified, anchor torque re-checked, hydraulic fluid level and condition inspected, and the columns checked for plumb.
