A four-post is a wonderful storage lift and a great place to do exhaust or oil changes, but the runways sit under the vehicle exactly where you need to swing a transmission jack, and the wheels stay loaded, so you can’t drop a driveshaft and rotate an axle by hand. A frame-engaging two-post gives you a clear floor under the car and free-spinning wheels. That’s the whole ballgame for drivetrain work.
The practical difference shows up the first time you try to get a transmission jack under a car. On a two-post you roll straight in, position under the pan, and lower the unit onto the jack with room to angle it out. On a four-post you’re working around runways and cross rails and usually end up building a stack of blocks. Features worth paying for and features that are marketing
Worth paying for: three-stage or drop-end front arms, because they reach low unibody pinch welds and also stretch out to a truck frame. Two-stage telescoping screw pads with a range of adapter heights. A single-point lock release so you’re not walking around to trip two columns. Padded overhead shutoff on clear-floor models. Arm restraints that actually engage. And ALI certification, which means an independent lab load-tested the design rather than the factory certifying itself.
Less important than the brochure suggests: extreme capacity. Homeowners routinely buy 12,000 or 15,000 lb units to lift a 5,500-pound truck, which mostly buys taller columns you don’t have headroom for and a wider footprint you don’t have floor for. If your heaviest vehicle is under three tons, a 10,000 lb rating is a comfortable margin. Also somewhat oversold: powder-coat color options and fancy control boxes.
