An RV and trailer service shop in southwest Iowa called us in late winter with a problem we hear constantly: they had plenty of room for a coach, but every time a customer’s tow vehicle needed a transmission service, the job went on jack stands on the floor. They wanted a 2 post car lift that could handle pickups and SUVs, give a technician clean access to a pan and crossmember, and fit under an existing truss without a building modification. What follows is that whole first year, from the site survey through the first transmission that came down on a jack — including the things we got right and the one we nearly missed.

The Site Survey That Changed the Spec

The shop’s initial plan was a 12,000 lb clear-floor unit. Reasonable on paper. We drove down, put a tape on the building, and the plan changed within twenty minutes. Their usable ceiling was just over eleven feet to the bottom of a truss chord, and the sprinkler main ran directly across the intended bay. A clear-floor overhead model needs the top beam and the padded shutoff bar to live above the highest vehicle, and there simply wasn’t room without cutting into a fire suppression line — which is not a conversation anyone wants to have with an insurer.

So we looked at baseplate. Baseplate two-post lifts route the equalizer cables and hydraulic line through a low channel across the floor between the columns, which means no overhead structure at all and full lifting height under a lower ceiling. The tradeoff is a crossover on the floor that people trip over and equipment rolls across. For a shop doing drivetrain work with a rolling transmission jack, that mattered, so we specced a low-profile floor channel and set the columns so the crossover sat behind where the jack would travel. That decision came out of walking the actual bay, not reading a drawing. It’s why we don’t quote a 2 post car lift off a phone call when we can get to the site instead.

Coring the Slab Before Anything Shipped

The shop owner told us the slab was “probably six inches.” Almost everyone says a number like that, and it’s almost never measured. We cored it. Two of the three test points came back a little over five inches of decent concrete on compacted base; the third, near an old expansion joint, was closer to four and sitting on fill that had clearly settled. That third point was within a foot of where one column wanted to go.

The fix was a cut-and-pour footing — saw a pad roughly four feet square, dig out the soft base, compact, and place new concrete tied to the existing slab, then let it cure a full week before anchoring. About a day of labor and a week of waiting, and it moved the install date back. Nobody enjoys that call. But wedge anchors in a two-post carry the entire load path, and an anchor in four inches of concrete over settled fill is a failure waiting for a loaded pickup. We also checked edge distance from the expansion joint, because an anchor set too close to a joint or slab edge loses a large fraction of its rated pullout. Choosing Arms and Adapters for Drivetrain Work

Transmission service is a specific kind of job, and it shapes the arm package. The technician needs the vehicle high enough to roll a transmission jack under it and drop a case straight down without dragging, and the pickup points have to be solid enough that nothing shifts when the crossmember bolts break loose. That points toward long-reach arms with three-stage telescoping on the rear pair and double-telescoping screw pads that can stack up to reach a frame rail on a lifted pickup.

We went asymmetric-leaning geometry on this install: short front arms, long rear arms, columns rotated slightly. The shop’s mix was mostly half-ton and three-quarter-ton tow vehicles plus the occasional mid-size SUV, and rotating the columns let the doors clear so a tech could reach in and put it in neutral without gymnastics. Then we specced adapters: a set of frame cradles for body-on-frame trucks, low-profile drop-end pads for the few unibody crossovers they see, and a stack of screw-pad extensions. Adapters are where a lot of shops try to save money and end up improvising with lumber, which is exactly how a vehicle comes off the pads. We’d rather sell the right adapter set up front. Combine that with a proper telescoping transmission jack rated for the heaviest case they’d handle, and the bay was actually configured for the work instead of just tall enough to do it.

Install Week: Columns, Cables, and Commissioning

Install itself was a single long day with a two-person crew, once the new footing had cured. We chalked the column layout and had the owner walk it and pull a tow vehicle into the marked position before a single hole was drilled — cheap insurance against discovering the air drop or the parts cart is in the wrong place. Then columns up, plumbed with a level in two planes, anchors drilled, cleaned, set, and torqued to the manufacturer’s published value with a calibrated wrench.

Hydraulics came next: power unit mounted, hose routed through the floor channel, system filled and bled until the cylinders moved without sponginess. Then the equalizer cables, which is the step that separates a good install from a rough one. Cable tension has to be even so both carriages rise together and the mechanical locks engage in the same position on each column. We cycle the unit empty several times, then under load, listening for lock engagement at every notch and checking carriage sync at full height. Before we left we walked their crew through the daily visual check, the correct single-point lock release sequence, and what a fraying cable looks like before it becomes a problem. The ALI sticker and the manual went on the column, not in a drawer. A properly commissioned 2 post car lift should feel boring on day one — that’s the goal.

The First Transmission Service and What We Learned

Their first real job on it was a fluid-and-filter service plus a valve body on a half-ton with 190,000 miles. It went fine, and the one thing they flagged afterward was something we’d expected: at full lift height, the crossmember cleared the jack beautifully, but the tech had to duck under the floor channel path once while walking a torque wrench around. He got used to it inside a week. That’s the honest baseplate tradeoff, and it’s still better than the alternative of no lift at all or a building modification.

The second thing they learned was about adapters. On a lifted three-quarter-ton with aftermarket rock sliders, the standard pads wanted to contact the slider instead of the frame. The stack extensions we’d included handled it, but the shop hadn’t practiced setting them and it cost them fifteen minutes the first time. We now spend an extra ten minutes on adapter training during commissioning because of that. By month three, drivetrain jobs that used to eat a full day on stands were coming through in a couple of hours, and they’d started taking tow-vehicle work they previously turned away. That throughput change is usually the real return on a 2 post car lift — not the hourly rate, but the jobs you stop declining.

Maintenance Through Iowa’s First Winter

Southwest Iowa shops deal with road salt and temperature swings, and a lift in an unheated or intermittently heated bay feels both. The first cold snap brought a slow-lift complaint: the unit rose fine once warm but crawled for the first cycle each morning. That’s almost always hydraulic fluid viscosity, not a failing pump. We swapped to a lower-viscosity ISO 22 hydraulic oil suited to cold ambient temperatures and the symptom disappeared. It’s a twenty-minute fix that gets misdiagnosed as a bad power unit more often than you’d believe.

The rest of the maintenance schedule is simple and non-negotiable. Weekly: visual check on cables, sheaves, arm restraints, and pad condition, plus a look under the power unit for weeping. Monthly: lubricate the carriage slide blocks and the arm pivot pins, check fluid level with the carriages fully down, and test the lock engagement at multiple heights. Annually: an ALI-certified inspection, an anchor re-torque, and a hard look at cable end fittings and cylinder rods for pitting from salt-laden runoff. Salt is the quiet killer here — vehicles drip brine onto the floor and it wicks onto column bases and anchor heads. A pressure rinse and a wire-brush-and-paint touch-up on column feet each spring adds years. What We’d Tell the Next Shop Weighing This

If you’re an RV, trailer, or general repair shop in southwest Iowa thinking about drivetrain work, three things matter more than the price on the sticker. First, measure the building honestly — to the lowest obstruction in the travel path, including sprinkler heads, heaters, and door tracks in the open position. That single measurement decides overhead versus baseplate and it decides it for you. Second, verify the slab instead of estimating it. A core test costs a fraction of a failed anchor and it either confirms your plan or saves your equipment.

Third, buy something we can get parts for. There is a real market in off-brand imports at attractive numbers, and we’ve watched shops idle a bay for a month waiting on a cable set from a company that stopped answering email. A mainstream Rotary or Challenger column with an ALI/ETL certification and a parts pipeline is worth the difference, and on a 12,000 lb unit that difference is smaller than most people assume once you factor freight and install. Beyond that, spec your adapters for the vehicles you actually see, budget for a transmission jack that matches your heaviest case, and put the annual inspection on the calendar the week the lift is commissioned.
