Why transmission work changes the specification
Most people shop by capacity and stop there. If your main job is pulling and reinstalling transmissions, the number that actually matters is how much clear working space you get under the vehicle and how stable the load is when you’ve removed 150 pounds of driveline from the middle of the car. A transmission jack needs floor room to roll in, tip, and come back out without fighting a column base or a floorplate. That’s the first argument for a clearfloor overhead-beam design over a baseplate model — nothing crosses the bay floor, so the jack rolls straight through from either side.
Height matters just as much. When you drop a transmission you want the vehicle high enough that you’re standing, not crouching, and you want the case to clear the crossmember with the jack at a workable extension. A full-rise setup that tops out around 70 to 72 inches of pad height gives most hobbyists true stand-up room under a truck. On the 12-foot ceiling this Ames customer had, an overhead-beam unit fit fine — the shutoff bar sits well under the joists. Under about 11 feet, or where a garage door opener rail runs down the center, we usually steer people to a baseplate or an asymmetric low-ceiling configuration instead. Getting this decision right is the difference between a lift you use every weekend and one you resent.
Concrete: the line item people forget
We have never once had a customer regret spending money on concrete, and we’ve had plenty regret skipping it. Two-post equipment transfers the entire vehicle weight into a handful of anchor bolts per column, and those bolts need real depth in real, cured, unreinforced-crack-free slab. The general requirement most manufacturers publish for a 10,000 lb unit is four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, and honestly four inches is a floor, not a target. Six inches is where we stop worrying. We hear “about five inches, but maybe less” from callers constantly — one Missouri customer told us exactly that — and “maybe less” is how a column walks.
Here’s the practical checklist item: before you buy anything, drill a test hole with a masonry bit in the area where the columns will land and measure the actual depth. If you find three inches over gravel, you’re not out of the game, you just need to plan a pair of pads. Cutting out and pouring two four-by-four-foot sections at six to eight inches with rebar is a weekend of work and a modest materials bill, and it turns a marginal garage into a safe one permanently. Compare that against the cost of a bent column or a dropped vehicle and it stops being a debate. Also check for radiant heat tubing and post-tension cable before you drill anything — we’ve had homeowners find both the hard way.
The twenty-year math on a 2 post car lift
People compare purchase prices because that’s the number on the page. The number that actually matters is cost per year of dependable use. A budget import column set in the low four-figure range and a name-brand unit in the mid-to-upper four figures look far apart in the shopping cart. Spread across twenty years, the difference is a couple hundred dollars a year — less than a set of tires — and that spread buys you a parts pipeline that still exists in 2045. That’s the whole argument for buying a 2 post car lift from a brand with a service network behind it.
Here’s what we see over two decades of real ownership: cables and sheaves are wear items on any equalized two-post design and eventually need replacement. Hydraulic cylinders develop seal weep. Lock dogs and latch springs wear. Power units run for a very long time but not forever. Every one of those is a routine, affordable repair — if the parts exist. Capacity, and why 10,000 lb is usually the honest answer
The Ankeny homeowner who called us said his heaviest vehicle was “under three tons” and wondered whether he could get away with a smaller-capacity unit to save money. Technically yes. Practically, no, and here’s why: capacity ratings assume balanced loading, and hobbyists don’t always load balanced. Add a truck you didn’t own when you bought the equipment, add a friend’s diesel, add a project car with the engine still in the nose and the tail hollowed out, and your margin evaporates. A 10,000 lb unit costs very little more than a 9,000 lb unit and covers essentially every half-ton pickup and SUV a home shop will ever see.
Where we do push people up to 12,000 or 15,000 lb is when three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks are in the mix, or when the vehicles are long enough that arm reach becomes the limiting factor before weight does. Capacity and geometry are separate problems. A short-arm asymmetric configuration is fantastic for opening car doors in a tight bay but gets awkward under a crew cab. Symmetric arms handle long wheelbases better but put the vehicle centered between the columns, which means climbing out before you raise it. What installation actually involves — and when to DIY
We get calls from people who specifically don’t want install, and that’s a legitimate choice. A capable person with a forklift or a telehandler, a rotary hammer, a torque wrench, and a patient afternoon can set columns, plumb them, run hydraulic lines, bleed the system, and anchor to spec. The manual is not a mystery novel. We’ve shipped plenty of units to buyers who did exactly that and never needed us again except for a set of cables eight years later.
What we’d ask you to be honest about is the three parts people get wrong. First, unloading — these come on a semi trailer, the columns are heavy and awkward, and “my neighbor has a tractor” has ended badly more than once. Second, anchor torque and shimming; columns must be plumb within manufacturer tolerance or the carriages bind and the cables wear unevenly. Third, the initial safety check — cycling the locks, verifying equal lock engagement side to side, and confirming the overhead shutoff functions before a vehicle ever goes up. Maintenance you can do yourself for the next two decades
Ownership cost drops dramatically when the owner does the fifteen-minute stuff. Monthly: look at both lifting cables end to end for broken strands, particularly where they run over sheaves, and check that the locks click audibly and engage on both columns at the same height. Wipe the columns and hit the carriage slide surfaces with a light lubricant. Look at the arm pins and pad screws for wear. Check hydraulic fluid level with the carriages fully down, and look for weep at the cylinder rod seals and every hose fitting.
Annually: cycle to full height empty and listen for anything that changes pitch, verify anchor bolt torque with a torque wrench rather than a guess, and inspect the concrete around each anchor for hairline cracks radiating outward — that’s your earliest warning of a slab problem. Grease the sheave bearings if your model has serviceable ones. Replace cables on the schedule the manufacturer publishes or the moment you see a broken strand, whichever comes first; cables are one of the least expensive parts on the machine and the most consequential. A hobbyist who does that list will get twenty years out of a 2 post car lift with nothing but a cable set, a seal kit, and maybe a power unit swap. Putting the checklist together before you buy
Run these in order and you won’t have regrets. Measure your true ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Measure bay width and confirm you have room for columns plus door swing plus a walkway. Drill and measure your actual concrete depth and note anything embedded in the slab. Identify the heaviest and longest vehicle you’ll ever put on it, then add a margin for the vehicle you don’t own yet. Decide whether a transmission jack, an engine hoist, or a welding cart needs to cross the bay floor — if yes, clearfloor overhead beam; if your ceiling is short, baseplate.
Then, and only then, shop brands. Ask one question of any seller: can I still get carriage parts, cables, and a power unit for this model in fifteen years? If the answer is vague, walk.
