Last February a collector in southwest Iowa called us about putting a 2 post car lift in the back half of a pole building where he keeps eight vehicles — a couple of pre-war cars, three muscle-era coupes, a farm truck he refuses to sell, and two drivers. He was not running a business. He wanted to do his own brake work, chase down leaks, and get every vehicle through annual inspection without renting bay time from a shop an hour away. Twelve months later we went back out for his first real service call. This is the whole arc of that first year, told honestly, because nobody publishes the boring middle part of lift ownership and that is where most of the lessons live.

Why a collector chose two posts over four
Most people storing vehicles assume they want a four-post, and for pure stacking they are right. A four-post rolls a car up on runways, holds it there indefinitely, and lets you park something underneath. But this collector’s actual need was different: he wanted wheels-off access. Brake jobs, wheel bearings, suspension bushings, exhaust hangers, floor pan inspection on the older cars — all of that is miserable on runways and easy with the wheels hanging free.
He also had a stubborn constraint. His building had 13 feet of clear height in the working half, plenty for an overhead model, but the concrete in the storage half was an unknown pour from the 1980s. Putting a lift in the good half made the decision for him. We talked through a mid-rise scissor as a compromise and he ruled it out because he wanted full stand-up height under the car for exhaust work. So a 10,000 lb symmetric clearfloor two-post it was, mounted in the working bay, with storage staying on the floor where it always had been. If you genuinely need both — service access and parking density — the honest answer is usually a two-post in one bay and a four-post in another, not one machine trying to do both jobs badly.
Install day, and the thing we found under the slab
We showed up on a cold morning with the columns on a flatbed, and the customer had a skid loader with forks to help unload — which saved everyone an hour and a lot of grunting. Before a single anchor went in, we drilled test holes at both column locations. The east side came back a clean six inches of hard, well-cured concrete. The west side hit six inches too, but the drill dropped through into what turned out to be a void where a floor drain trench had been backfilled and never properly compacted.
That is exactly the kind of discovery that ruins a self-install. Anchoring a column over a void looks fine on install day and fails months later under load. We shifted the layout 14 inches south, re-drilled, confirmed solid material under both locations, and set the columns there. The revised position cost him a little door-swing room on the passenger side and nothing else. Total install ran about six hours including anchor torque, cable equalization, lock synchronization, and a full function test with a car on the arms. We also ran through the lowering procedure with him twice, made him do it himself, and left the manual and the ALI safety materials on his bench. Install day is not just bolting steel down; it is the training session that determines whether the next ten years go smoothly.
The ALI Gold label and why a hobbyist should care
He asked us straight out whether ALI Gold certification mattered for someone who was not a commercial shop. Our answer was yes, and not for regulatory reasons. ALI Gold means an independent laboratory tested that specific model against the ANSI/ALI safety standard — structural load capacity, lock system function, overload behavior, and the honesty of the capacity rating. The factory also submits to ongoing audits to keep the label.
For a collector, the practical value is that the capacity number on the column is a number you can trust. Uncertified imports frequently advertise a 9,000 or 10,000 lb rating that was never verified by anyone outside the factory. When you are putting an irreplaceable car six feet in the air over your own body, verified is worth the modest premium. There is a second angle too: homeowner insurance. We have had customers whose carrier asked whether the shop equipment in the outbuilding was certified, and having a straight answer with a model number and a certification label attached made the conversation short. The ALI documentation also spells out the annual inspection expectation, which gives a hobbyist a real maintenance calendar instead of guessing. Inspection season: eight vehicles, one weekend
The real test came in the fall when he ran his whole fleet through annual inspection prep. Eight vehicles in two weekends, each one going up for a look at brake lines, fuel lines, exhaust, steering components, and the underbody rust that Iowa winters guarantee. He told us the workflow surprised him: the slow part was not the lifting, it was the setup. Older cars with unibody rockers and no factory lift points needed careful pad placement every time, and a couple of the pre-war chassis needed tall pad adapters to reach frame rails without contacting anything else.
That is a standing lesson for collectors. A modern car has published lift points and the standard rubber pads land right on them. A 1930s frame, a fiberglass-bodied coupe, or a car with aftermarket rocker panels needs adapters, and buying a set of stackable adapters and truck adapters up front is cheaper than improvising with blocks of wood, which is how people bend arms. He also found the drop-end arms on his unit paid for themselves — the low-profile front arms slid under two cars that a standard arm would not have cleared without ramps. By the end of that second weekend he had found a cracked brake line on one car and a rotted exhaust hanger on another, both of which would have been invisible from a creeper on the floor.
What went wrong in month nine
The first service call came in September. He phoned and said the motor was running, there was fluid in the reservoir, nothing was leaking, and the lift would not go up. That exact description shows up in our inbox several times a month, and nine times out of ten it is not the motor. We walked him through it on the phone before dispatching anyone.
First check: fluid level with the carriages fully down, because a reservoir that looks full with the lift partway up can be low. Second check: the lowering valve, which on most designs is held closed electrically or by a manual lever and can stick open if debris gets past the filter — in which case the pump pushes fluid straight back to the tank and the lift sits still. Third check: air in the system after any hose or cylinder work, which causes a spongy no-lift condition. In his case it was a contaminated lowering valve, and the culprit was fluid he had topped off from a partially used jug that had been sitting open in a dusty building for a year. We cleaned the valve, flushed and refilled with clean fluid, replaced the suction filter, and were done in under two hours. Total cost was a fraction of what he had braced for. The lesson he took away: buy the right hydraulic fluid in a sealed container, keep it capped, and change it on the schedule in the manual rather than topping off forever.
Maintenance a 2 post car lift actually needs
The maintenance list for a home or collector installation is genuinely short, and skipping it is what turns a cheap fix into an expensive one. Weekly, when you use it: listen for both safety locks clicking evenly as the carriages rise, and confirm the arm restraints engage when you swing an arm into position. Monthly: eyeball the equalization cables at the sheaves for broken strands or fraying, check hydraulic fittings for weeping, and look at the rubber pads for cracking or compression.
Quarterly: grease the sheaves and slider blocks per the manual, wipe the inside of the columns where the carriages ride, and verify anchor torque with a wrench. Annually: a qualified inspection, which for our Iowa customers we bundle with whatever else needs doing in the area. Cables are the wear item people ignore longest. They stretch, they need adjusting so both carriages rise together, and eventually they need replacing — in a low-use collector setting that might be a decade or more, but in a damp or salty building it comes sooner. Pads are cheap and get replaced far too rarely; a compressed, oil-soaked pad is a slip hazard. Year one verdict, and what we would tell the next collector
Twelve months in, the collector’s honest assessment was that the lift changed what projects he was willing to start. Jobs he used to defer — dropping a fuel tank, replacing a rear main seal, chasing a rattle in an exhaust system — became weekend work instead of shop work. First, do not guess at your concrete; a test hole costs nothing compared to a failed anchor, and pole buildings in particular hide voids, trenches, and thin pours. Second, budget for adapters and a second set of pads up front, especially if your fleet includes anything older than about 1975 — the arms and pads that come in the crate are designed around modern lift points.
