On a four-post, the runways sit exactly where you want a drain pan and a filter wrench. He’d used a friend’s four-post twice and came away frustrated.
The other factor was footprint. Six vehicles in a shed means the floor is precious. A four-post parked permanently in the middle of the bay eats a stall whether a car is on it or not. Capacity, Ceiling Height, and Not Overbuying
We get asked constantly whether a collector should buy 10,000 lb or step up to 12,000 or 15,000. Honest answer: for a collection of cars and half-ton trucks, 10,000 lb is right, and the extra money is better spent on a certified unit with good arms than on capacity you’ll never use. The heaviest vehicle in this customer’s shed was a crew cab at roughly 6,200 pounds. That’s 62% of rated capacity, which is exactly where you want to live.
Ceiling height drives configuration more than capacity does. With fourteen feet you can run a clear-floor overhead unit and lift a tall SUV to full height without touching the shutoff bar. Between about eleven and twelve feet, you’re usually looking at a baseplate model — the hydraulic and cable runs cross the floor in a low channel instead of overhead — which works fine and is what we spec for a lot of shorter shops and residential garages. Below eleven feet, we start talking about a mid-rise scissor instead, because a two-post you can only raise halfway is a compromise nobody enjoys. Also check your door: a fourteen-foot ceiling with a nine-foot opening still limits what you can drive in. Measure the whole path, not just the bay.
Year One Maintenance and What We’d Tell the Next Collector
Twelve months in, we did his first annual inspection.
