If you are a weekend mechanic in Council Bluffs shopping for a 2 post car lift so you can finally stop laying on a creeper under a jack stand, the single most important thing on the spec sheet is not lifting capacity. It is the arm restraint system and how positively the safety cams engage under load. We install, service, and stock parts for lifts all over Iowa and Nebraska out of our shop in Ames, and when we get called to look at a hobby-garage lift that scared somebody, the problem is almost never the hydraulics. It is worn arm restraint gears, a bent pin, or a lock ladder that never fully seated because the columns were shimmed crooked on day one. Why Arm Restraints Matter More on a Restoration Lift

A commercial shop puts a vehicle in the air, does a brake job, and brings it down inside forty minutes. A restoration guy puts a 1968 project up and leaves it there for three weeks while he cuts rusted rockers out, grinds, welds, and hangs off the rocker panel with a body hammer. Those are completely different duty cycles for the same machine. The arm restraint is the mechanism that keeps the swing arm from rotating out from under the pickup point when you push sideways on the car. On a short quick job, sideways load barely registers. On a metal-work job, you are leaning, prying, and hammering laterally for hours.

That is why we tell hobbyists to look at the restraint design first. The good ones use a hardened gear and pin that mesh whenever the arm carries load, and they release only when the arm is fully lowered. The cheap ones use a spring-loaded plunger dropping into a shallow notch, and after a few hundred cycles with dirt in the mechanism, that plunger sits high and the arm can creep. We have pulled restraint gears off a hobby lift where the teeth were rounded like an old bike sprocket. The owner had no idea, because it never failed while he was watching. Before buying any lift, ask what the restraint is, whether replacement gears are stocked, and whether you can inspect it without disassembling the arm. If the answer to the last one is no, keep shopping.

Reading the Safety Cam and Lock Ladder Before You Buy

Every two post design uses a mechanical lock ladder in the column and a spring-loaded cam or dog that drops into the rungs. Hydraulics lift the carriage. The locks are what hold it there. On a well-built unit, you hear a firm, evenly spaced click as the carriage passes each rung, and when you lower the lift onto the locks, both sides settle with a solid clunk at the same height. On a poorly assembled or badly worn unit, one side clicks softly, or you hear a scrape instead of a click, which usually means the cam is not swinging its full travel.

When you shop, look at how the cam is actuated. Most designs use an air cylinder or a cable to pull the dogs clear for descent. Air release is simple to diagnose and cheap to fix; you can hear a leak and you can replace a solenoid in twenty minutes. Cable release systems work fine but need periodic adjustment, and if one cable stretches more than the other, the lift will drop unevenly onto the locks. Ask the seller what the lock adjustment procedure is. If nobody can describe it in plain language, that is a signal about how much support you will get later. We keep lock dogs, springs, air cylinders, and release cables on the shelf for the brands we sell precisely because these are the wear items that come up two and five years in, long after the sale.

Concrete Is the Part of a 2 Post Car Lift Nobody Inspects

We have measured hobby-garage slabs in western Iowa that ranged from a genuine six inches of well-cured concrete down to three and a half inches over gravel with a crack running the length of the bay. That difference decides whether you can safely own a two post at all. A ten thousand pound clearfloor unit concentrates enormous tension at the anchor bolts, and the anchors are only as good as the concrete gripping them. Thin or crumbly concrete lets an anchor cone out, the column leans a few degrees, and now your lock ladder is no longer plumb. Uneven lock engagement almost always traces back to a foundation problem, not a manufacturing defect.

Before ordering, drill a test hole in an inconspicuous corner of the bay and measure actual thickness. Note whether there is a control joint or crack within a couple feet of where a column would land. Most manufacturers want four inches minimum of 3,000 psi concrete for a ten thousand pound baseplate model, and more for higher capacities, but minimums are minimums. If you come up short, the fix is a saw-cut footing pour, typically four feet by four feet and a foot deep under each column, tied into the existing slab. That is a Saturday with a rented saw and a couple yards of mix, and it is far cheaper than the alternative. Call us with your measurements and we will tell you honestly whether your slab passes.

Ceiling Height, Door Height, and the Baseplate Decision

Clearfloor two post lifts run an overhead beam with the hydraulic hose and equalization cables up top, which gives you a completely open floor to roll a transmission jack or an engine hoist under. They also need roughly twelve feet of clearance, and the overhead safety shutoff bar eats a few inches more. Baseplate designs move all that plumbing into a channel across the floor, so you can install one under a ten or eleven foot ceiling, but you live with a small ramp at the drive-in point forever.

Most of the hobby garages we work in around Council Bluffs and the Missouri River bottoms are eleven to twelve feet at the truss, sometimes with a loft on one side. That usually points to baseplate. Do not forget your overhead door height either. A sixteen foot wide door in a twelve foot tall building is common, but if the door track hangs low when open, that track can be the real limit on how high you can raise a car, not the ceiling. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Also think about lights, wiring runs, and any garage door opener rail that will end up directly over the lift. We have relocated more than one opener during an install because nobody checked. Ten minutes with a tape measure before you order saves a return freight bill that will ruin your month.

Symmetric, Asymmetric, and What You Actually Restore

Symmetric two post lifts put the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms, and the vehicle sits centered between them. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns roughly thirty degrees and use shorter front arms, letting you set the car back so the door opens between the columns. If you are restoring a car with long doors, a two-door coupe or an old pickup, asymmetric geometry means you can actually get in and out while it is in the air. If you work on trucks, duallies, and vans, symmetric loading handles the longer wheelbase and heavier front weight bias better.

A lot of the units on the market now are versymmetric, meaning the arms and top beam are configured to do a reasonable job of both. In practice, for restoration work, what matters more is arm reach and pad height. Drop-end or three-stage front arms reach in under a low unibody pinch weld and get down under a lowered car. Telescoping screw pads with a stack of adapters handle a frame-on truck. If your project is a fifties car with a full perimeter frame, you want tall adapters. If it is a modern unibody, you want low-profile pads that reach far forward. Tell whoever you buy from exactly what is going up in the air first, and let them spec the arms around that. Guessing on arm reach is the most common regret we hear.

The Weekly Inspection Routine We Teach Hobby Owners

Commercial shops are required to have their lifts inspected annually, and most do it because their insurance carrier asks. Hobby owners have nobody looking over their shoulder, which is exactly why a habit matters. Ours is short. Before the first lift of the day, look at both equalization cables where they turn over the sheaves at the top of the columns for broken strands or fraying, run the carriage up a few feet and listen for even lock clicks, and physically wiggle each arm to confirm the restraint has engaged. That is under two minutes.

Once a month, get a wrench on the anchor bolts and confirm torque, because concrete relaxes around anchors over the first year and a loose anchor is invisible until the column moves. Check the fluid level in the power unit with the carriage all the way down. Look under the lift for hydraulic weep at the cylinder rod seals and at every hose fitting. Grease the lock cams and the arm restraint gears with a light spray, since dry restraint gears are the failure we see most. Twice a year, look hard at the arm pins and the pad threads. Bent pins and stripped pad threads are cheap to replace and expensive to ignore. What We Would Tell You to Buy, and Why New Usually Wins

A used two post out of a closing shop looks like a bargain until you total up the freight, a crane to unload, replacement cables, new anchors, and the fact that the lock ladder wear is unknown. We have inspected plenty of used lifts that were fine and plenty that we told the buyer to walk away from. If a used unit is truly local, has documented service history, and you can watch it cycle under load before money changes hands, it can work. Absent all three, we generally steer hobbyists toward new.

Budget expectations matter here: a realistic new install in the low-to-mid four figures for equipment is achievable in baseplate configuration, and clearfloor runs somewhat higher. If your bay needs a footing pour or an opener relocated, add for that.
