A restoration shop owner up in the Iowa Great Lakes region called us in the middle of a CV axle job on a customer’s AWD wagon, wedged under the car on ramps with a half-shaft he could not get clearance on, and asked what it would take to get a 2 post car lift standing in his bay by the end of the month. Fair question, and the honest answer has almost nothing to do with the lift itself. Capacity and configuration are the easy part. What actually delays projects is freight: a 2,000-pound crated shipment on a 53-foot trailer, a gravel approach, no dock, and a driver who is not paid to help you unload. Here is the decision tree we walk through with every buyer.

Step One: Set a Real Budget Before You Shop Models
Budget drives everything downstream, so name the number first. Restoration shops tend to land in one of three places. Under roughly five thousand dollars, you are shopping value-brand 9,000 to 10,000 lb columns — functional steel, simpler locks, generic hydraulics, and parts support that depends on whether the importer is still around in a decade. In the middle band you get better cable and sheave quality, real telescoping arms with usable reach, and dealer parts you can actually order. At the top, commercial Rotary and Challenger units cost noticeably more and are the equipment we can still supply every seal, sheave, lock dog, and arm restraint for twenty years out.
What restoration work does to that math is interesting. You are not turning bays like a quick-lube — you might have one car up for three weeks. That argues for spending less on cycle-rated durability. But you are also doing long, awkward jobs where the vehicle needs to sit high and stable while you fight seized subframe bolts, and you want arms that reach unusual pickup points on a 1968 chassis with no modern pinch welds. That argues for spending more on arm versatility and lock quality. Our usual advice: buy mid-tier or better and put the savings into good stands, a transmission jack, and a decent air setup. A 2 post car lift is a fifteen-to-twenty-five-year purchase, and the difference between tiers is a rounding error spread across that timeline.
Step Two: Ceiling and Slab Narrow the Field Fast
Once the budget is set, two measurements eliminate most of the catalog. Measure your true clear ceiling height to the lowest obstruction — opener rail, light fixture, sprinkler, truss bottom chord — and measure or verify your slab thickness. Fourteen feet of clear ceiling opens up any clear-floor overhead model with full rise, which is what you want for a restoration bay where you will be standing upright under a body all day. Around eleven to twelve feet, you can still run most overhead 10,000 lb units but you lose some top-end travel on tall vehicles. Below that, baseplate is the answer.
Slab is the harder one because nobody knows for sure. Manufacturers typically want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, sometimes more for heavier capacities. We have talked to buyers who said their pour was six to eight inches and others who guessed five and turned out to have less at the edges. Drill a test hole in the column footprint and measure it — that is fifteen minutes of work that prevents a very bad afternoon. If you come up thin, cut and pour footing pads to spec. Keep anchors the required distance from slab edges and control joints, torque them with a wrench rather than an impact, and re-check them after the first several cycles. Old shop buildings in the lakes region often have a good original pour with a thin later topping, and that topping does not count toward anchor depth.
Step Three: Symmetric, Asymmetric, or Versymmetric
Configuration is where restoration work diverges from general repair. Symmetric geometry puts the columns directly across from each other with four roughly equal arms, centering the vehicle between the posts. That balances load well and gives you long forward reach, which matters on full-frame classics, trucks, and anything with a long wheelbase and widely spaced frame points. The cost is door access — the driver’s door opens into the column, which is annoying if you are constantly climbing in to check a steering column or run wiring.
Asymmetric rotates the columns about thirty degrees and uses shorter front arms so the vehicle sits rearward, clearing the doors. Great for sedans and unibody work, less ideal for very heavy long vehicles. Versymmetric designs with an adjustable top beam and swing arms let you run either way, and for a shop with a mixed pipeline — a unibody wagon in for half-shafts this week, a body-on-frame pickup next week — that flexibility earns its keep. For CV axle and half-shaft work specifically, what you care about most is getting the suspension hanging free at a comfortable working height with unobstructed access to the inner joint and the hub. Any of these configurations does that; the arms and pad adapters are what determine whether you can set up in two minutes or twenty. Ask about screw pads, drop-end arms, and stackable adapters when you are comparing a 2 post car lift against another model.
Step Four: How Freight Actually Works
A crated two-post ships as one or two heavy skids, typically 1,600 to 2,400 pounds total, moving LTL on a 48- or 53-foot van trailer. The carrier’s obligation ends at the back of the trailer. They will not carry it into your building, they will not hand-unload it, and if the driver cannot physically reach your address, the shipment goes back to a terminal and you pay redelivery. That is the single most common surprise we see.
Before we quote freight, we want to know four things: can a semi turn around at your address, is your approach paved or gravel and how does it hold up in spring thaw, do you have a dock or a level area for a liftgate, and what equipment do you own for unloading. If your driveway is a quarter mile of soft gravel with a tight turn at the shop, we will tell you plainly and plan around it. Sometimes the smart move is a terminal pickup — you bring a trailer to the freight terminal in Sioux Falls, Sioux City, or Des Moines and haul it the last leg yourself. That often saves money and removes all the residential-delivery risk. Also inspect the crate before you sign. Note any damage on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery, photograph it, and count the boxes against the packing list. A signature with no exceptions noted makes a damage claim very difficult, no matter how obvious the forklift hole in the crate is.
Step Five: Forklift, Skid Steer, or Liftgate
Unloading is where buyers either look like heroes or spend an evening on the phone. A forklift with 4,000 pounds of capacity and long forks handles a two-post crate easily — that is the best case, and a lot of shops have one or can borrow one from a neighbor for an hour. A skid steer with pallet forks works if the capacity is honest and the ground is firm; a compact machine at the edge of its rating with a tall load on soft gravel is how crates get dropped. A tractor with a loader and forks is workable for the lighter boxes but marginal for the column skid.
If you have none of that, order a liftgate. It costs extra and it needs firm, level ground behind the trailer, and the gate capacity has to exceed the heaviest single piece — which is why we sometimes split a shipment so no one skid exceeds the gate rating. The other option is a rollback or a local wrecker service; an hour of their time is cheap compared to a refused delivery. However you unload, plan where the crate lands. Columns are eight to ten feet long, heavy, and want to be staged near their final position, not across the shop from it. Step Six: Install Day and Commissioning
Whether you do it yourself or we do it, the sequence is the same. Snap chalk lines for column locations off a square reference, verify the drive-through width and the distance from walls, then drill anchor holes through the base plates. Set both columns, shim only within the allowed stack, and torque anchors to the manual’s number with a torque wrench. Raise the top beam or lay the baseplate cover, run the hydraulic line and the equalizer cables, wire the power unit, then fill and bleed the system. Cycle the lift empty several times, verify both carriages rise together and lock in the same notch, and adjust the cable equalization until they do.
Commissioning is the part people rush. Check the overhead safety shutoff bar if the model has one. Confirm the single-point lock release works from both columns and that the locks audibly engage on the way up. Test the arm restraints — they should engage automatically and hold. Then load-test with a real vehicle at a low height, shake it, and only then go to working height. Write the install date and anchor torque on the column with a marker so the next person knows.
