A farm shop owner northwest of Storm Lake called us last spring because he was two weekends into replacing an oil pan gasket on a three-quarter-ton pickup, still on jack stands, and still not able to get a wrench square on the rear pan bolts. He wanted a 2 post car lift and he wanted it before harvest. That conversation is one we have a dozen times a year across northwest Iowa, and it almost always starts in the middle — with a vehicle in the air on the wrong equipment. Before you spend money, there is a short list of things to measure and verify. We put this checklist together from the site surveys we actually run, in the order we actually run them.

Why Oil Pan Work Punishes the Wrong Lift Choice

Oil pan gasket replacement is one of the most demanding jobs a home or farm shop takes on, and it is a genuinely good test of whether a lift is right for you. You need the vehicle high enough to stand under with a torque wrench, you need the crossmember clear, and on a lot of pickups you need room to drop a subframe or unbolt a motor mount and jack the engine up an inch. That means clear undercarriage access from bumper to bumper. A four-post with runways under the tires puts steel exactly where you need to work, and a scissor unit puts a platform under the middle of the vehicle. Neither one is wrong for other jobs — they are just wrong for this one.

That is why the two-post format keeps winning for shops that do driveline, exhaust, transmission, and pan work. The arms grab the pinch welds or frame rails and everything between them is open air. On the pickup that started this article, the owner needed to loosen the rear pan bolts that sit behind the crossmember; with a four-post he would have been fighting a runway the whole time. We told him plainly that a 2 post car lift was the right tool, and then we started asking the questions that determine whether his building could actually take one. That order matters. Picking the lift before checking the site is how people end up with a pallet in the driveway and a problem they cannot solve.

Concrete: The One Thing You Cannot Fake

Every conversation we have about a two-post starts with concrete, because it is the only item on the list that is expensive to fix after the fact. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb clear-floor model, and several want more than that under a baseplate design where all the load funnels into fewer anchor points. Northwest Iowa farm shops are all over the map. We have seen beautiful six-inch pours with rebar on a machine shed built in 2015, and we have seen three-and-a-half inches of unreinforced slab poured over sand in 1978 with a nice smooth finish that looks identical from above.

Do not guess. Drill a test hole in the area where a column would land and measure the depth with a piece of welding rod bent at a right angle. If you have a saw cut or a broken edge somewhere in the shop, measure there. Also look for control joints, expansion joints, and floor drains — anchors need to sit a minimum distance from any edge or joint, usually several inches, and a column that lands on a joint is a column that will loosen. If the slab is thin, the fix is a cut-out and a reinforced pad poured to spec, typically four feet by four feet and eight to twelve inches deep per the manufacturer’s drawing. It is not a cheap afternoon, but it is far cheaper than discovering the problem with a vehicle overhead. When customers tell us the concrete “is probably four inches, maybe less,” we treat that as thin until proven otherwise.

Ceiling Height and the Overhead vs. Baseplate Decision

The second measurement is ceiling height, and it drives the biggest configuration decision you will make. A clear-floor overhead model runs a beam across the top between the columns, which keeps the floor completely open but adds roughly 12 to 14 inches above the column height. Most overhead units want somewhere around 12 to 13 feet of clear ceiling to reach full rise. A baseplate model runs the hoses and equalizer cables through a low channel at floor level instead, so the overall height drops significantly and you can often work under a 10-foot ceiling.

Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. In a machine shed that means the bottom of the trusses, the bottom of any light fixture, the garage door track, and the door opener rail. We had a customer in northwest Iowa with a 139-inch clear height who was set on an overhead until we walked him through the numbers and moved him to a baseplate; he lost nothing but a small floor ramp he steps over twice a day. Also plan where the door travels. If your overhead door rolls back on a track, the columns need to clear that track and the open door panel, which usually means setting the lift farther back into the bay than you first sketched. Bring us a tape measure reading and we will tell you which configuration actually fits your building, not just which one we have on the shelf.

Vehicle Weight, Capacity, and Honest Math

Capacity is where people either overspend or, more dangerously, underspend. A 10,000 lb two-post handles nearly everything a farm shop sees: half-tons, three-quarter-tons, SUVs, cars, and most one-ton single-rear-wheel pickups empty. The number to check is not curb weight from a spec sheet — it is the actual weight of the heaviest thing you plan to lift, with a full fuel tank, a toolbox, and whatever lives in the bed. A loaded three-quarter-ton diesel with a flatbed and a service body can surprise you.

Also think about distribution. A two-post carries the load on four arms, and a long-wheelbase pickup puts more weight forward than a car does. Symmetric models place the columns so the vehicle sits centered with roughly half the weight on each pair of arms and the doors opening between the columns. Asymmetric models rotate the columns and shift the vehicle back so the driver’s door clears the post — better for cars, slightly more particular about where you set the pads on a pickup. Versymmetric designs from Rotary and Challenger let you do both by repositioning the arms. If your shop is mostly pickups and tractors’ support vehicles, we usually steer northwest Iowa customers toward a 10,000 or 12,000 lb versymmetric unit. If you are lifting a one-ton dually or a medium-duty truck, we move you up to a 15,000 lb frame and a wider column spread, because loading a lift to 98 percent of its rating every week is not a plan.

Power, Air, and the Utility Run You Forgot

Almost every site survey turns up an electrical surprise. Most two-post power units ship as 208-230V single-phase, and they want a dedicated 30-amp circuit within reach of the column. A lot of older farm shops have a single 20-amp 120V circuit feeding the whole building through a long run of undersized wire. That will not run a lift motor well, and voltage drop over 150 feet of small-gauge wire will cook a motor over time. Have an electrician verify the panel capacity and pull a proper circuit before delivery day, and put the disconnect somewhere you can actually reach it.

Air matters too. The safety locks on almost every modern two-post release pneumatically, so you need a shop air line reaching the columns — typically 30 PSI minimum, though most compressors handle that without thinking. If you do not have air plumbed to that corner of the building, add it to the same project. Also decide which side the power unit lives on before install, because moving it later means new hose routing and possibly a longer cable run. We generally mount it on the side with the electrical service and away from the walking path. One more small thing that saves grief: leave yourself three feet of clear floor behind each column. You will need it for anchor drilling, for shimming the columns plumb, and forever after for getting a floor jack and a transmission stand into position.

Site Survey Walkthrough for a 2 Post Car Lift

Here is the actual sequence we use when we walk a shop. First, we sketch the bay with real dimensions — width, depth, door opening, and any obstruction like a loft, workbench, or wall-mounted air line. The Iowa shops that give us trouble are usually the ones with a loft on one side; you can still fit a 2 post car lift, but the column placement has to respect the loft edge and the arm swing has to clear the posts holding it up. Second, we confirm concrete depth and locate joints. Third, ceiling height at the lowest point. Fourth, power and air. Fifth, how the vehicle drives in and out.

That last one gets skipped constantly. A two-post needs a straight approach so you can center the vehicle between the columns without a twelve-point turn, and it needs somewhere for the doors to open when the vehicle is up. If your only entry is a 16-foot door on the short wall and the far wall is stacked with shelving, the lift may fit dimensionally but be miserable to use. We would rather tell you that on the phone than after you have paid freight. For most farm shops in northwest Iowa, a 12-by-24-foot clear working footprint with a 12-foot ceiling handles a 10,000 lb clear-floor unit comfortably. Tighter than that and we start looking at baseplate models or asymmetric column placement to buy back the room you need.

Freight, Unloading, and Whether to Self-Install

Two-post lifts ship on a flatbed or a dropdeck trailer, and the columns are heavy — a 10,000 lb model runs roughly 1,500 to 1,800 pounds crated. Freight carriers deliver curbside, and unloading is on you unless you buy a liftgate service that most two-post crates are too heavy for anyway. If you have a skid loader or a forklift on the farm, you are in good shape; a tractor with forks works too. Tell us what you have when you order and we will match the freight arrangement to it, because a driver showing up with no way to get the crate off the deck ruins everybody’s day.

On installation: plenty of capable people set their own lifts, and a lot of the leads we get specifically say they do not want install. That is fine, and we sell that way. What we ask is that you commit to doing it correctly — hammer-drill the anchors to full depth, torque them to the manufacturer’s spec with an actual torque wrench, shim the columns plumb within the tolerance in the manual, and bleed the cylinder properly before the first load. Then check the equalizer cable tension and confirm both locks engage at every position.
