A dirt-track crew chief in southeast Iowa reached out to us the week before their season opener because their 2 post car lift had started clicking unevenly — one column dropping into the lock a half-second behind the other. They had a hauler full of parts, a car that needed annual state inspection work on the tow vehicle, and no interest in a surprise. What they had was a stretched equalizer cable, which is one of the most common and most misunderstood service items on a two-post. We drove down, adjusted it in under an hour, and then spent longer than that talking through when cables need adjusting versus replacing. This article is that conversation, plus the decision tree we use with buyers.

What Equalizer Cables Actually Do

People assume the cables on a two-post are lifting the car. They are not. On the overwhelming majority of designs, hydraulic cylinders do the lifting and the cables exist purely to keep the two carriages traveling at the same rate. They cross over the top of the columns on an overhead unit or run through a floor channel on a baseplate model, tied to each carriage so that if one side tries to rise faster, the cable pulls the other along. That is the entire job — synchronization, not load bearing.

Understanding that changes how you think about wear. A stretched cable does not mean the lift is about to drop a car; the hydraulics and the mechanical safety locks handle that. What a stretched cable means is that your carriages are out of sync, your locks are engaging at different heights, and the vehicle is sitting slightly off-level. Left alone long enough, that off-level condition puts side loads on the carriage slide blocks, chews up the column liners, and eventually starts binding. The crew chief’s unit had done exactly that: about a quarter inch of carriage differential, worn slide blocks on one side, and a hydraulic system working harder than it should. The cable was the symptom, but by the time we got there it had become the cause of a second problem too. Catching that early is the whole point of an inspection habit.

How Often to Inspect, and What You Are Looking For

Our baseline recommendation for a shop or a race team running an inspection schedule: visual check monthly, hands-on check quarterly, full documented inspection annually. A hobbyist lifting a car a few times a month can stretch that, but we would still want eyes on the cables every season change. Iowa garages swing from humid summers to below-zero winters, and condensation on unpainted wire rope is a real corrosion driver.

The visual check takes two minutes. Run the lift to mid-height, look at the full visible length of each cable, and hunt for broken strands, kinks, flat spots, rust bloom, or birdcaging where the strands have loosened and spread. Any broken wire is a replace signal — not a monitor-it signal. Industry practice generally treats a few broken wires in one lay length as condemnation criteria, and on a device holding a vehicle over your head we round down aggressively. Also check the sheaves the cable rides over. A grooved, seized, or wobbling sheave will saw through a brand-new cable faster than years of normal use. The hands-on check adds cable tension: with the lift fully lowered and the locks disengaged, both cables should have similar tension and neither should be slack enough to slap. If you can pluck one like a guitar string and the other feels dead, you have a synchronization problem on your 2 post car lift that needs an adjustment before the next lift cycle.

Adjust or Replace? The Honest Answer

New cables stretch. That is not a defect, it is how wire rope behaves — the strands seat against each other under load and the assembly loses a little length. On a fresh install we tell customers to expect an adjustment within the first few months and then settling into a much slower rate. Adjustment is simple: the cables terminate in threaded rods with nuts, and you take up slack evenly on both sides until the carriages match and the locks click in unison.

Replace instead of adjust when any of these are true. You have run out of thread on the adjuster — that means the cable has stretched past its serviceable range. You see any broken strand anywhere on the run. You find corrosion pitting rather than surface rust. The cable has a kink or a flattened section from being crushed by a dropped part or a jack stand. Or the cable is simply old — we consider a decade a reasonable planning horizon for a heavily used commercial unit even with no visible defects, because fatigue accumulates invisibly. The southeast Iowa team we mentioned ended up replacing both cables at the end of that season rather than adjusting a third time. Cables are one of the cheapest components on the entire machine and always get replaced in pairs, never singly. Mismatched cable age on a 2 post car lift is asking for the same problem again in six months.

Decision Tree Step One: Start With Your Budget Reality

Now the buying side. When somebody calls us about a two-post, the first fork in the tree is money, because it eliminates half the options immediately and there is no point pretending otherwise. We hear “around four thousand” and “around five thousand” constantly, and those numbers do buy a legitimate 10,000 lb unit from a reputable manufacturer. What they generally do not buy is a 10,000 lb unit plus freight, plus a certified install, plus anchors, plus truck adapters, plus a concrete cut-out if your slab is thin.

So step one is to separate the equipment budget from the project budget. A hobbyist in New York called us wanting a two-post for restoring an old car with a 14-foot ceiling and eight inches of concrete, no forklift on site, and a clear preference for nothing expensive. That is an easy project — good ceiling, good floor, modest requirements — and the equipment budget is basically the whole budget. A shop with 4.5 inches of questionable concrete, a 16-foot door, a loft on one side, and a wall on the other is a different animal, and the honest quote includes site work. We would rather tell somebody up front that their project is a certain tier than sell them a lift that sits in a crate while they figure out the floor. If the number is tight, the right move is often a lower-capacity, higher-quality unit rather than a high-capacity budget one.

Decision Tree Step Two: Ceiling Height and Overhead Obstructions

The second fork is vertical space, and it is the one people measure wrong most often. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the path of the lift, not to the peak of the ceiling. Garage door tracks, opener rails, unit heaters, light fixtures, and exposed trusses all count. We have had customers report a 14-foot ceiling and then discover a door track at 10’2″ running exactly where the overhead beam wanted to go.

With genuine clearance of roughly 12 feet or more, a clear-floor overhead model is our default. Nothing crosses the drive-through, cleanup is easier, and the automatic shutoff bar protects tall vehicles. Between about 10.5 and 12 feet, it depends on the specific model’s overall height and whether you need full rise for the vehicles you work on. Below that, or where a mezzanine or loft blocks one side, baseplate is the answer. Baseplate two-posts put the equalizer cables and hydraulic hose in a low floor channel — you drive over a small ramp, and you accept that the channel takes some abuse. In exchange you fit under an obstruction that would otherwise disqualify a 2 post car lift entirely. For a race team working out of a converted pole barn, baseplate is frequently the only realistic configuration, and there is nothing second-class about it.

Decision Tree Step Three: Symmetric, Asymmetric, and Capacity

Third fork: how the vehicle sits between the columns. Symmetric two-posts center the vehicle with columns directly opposite each other and arms of equal length. They handle heavy, long vehicles well and distribute weight evenly, but door clearance is tight because the driver’s door lands right at the column. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and use shorter front arms, positioning the vehicle rearward so doors open into open space. For a shop where techs get in and out of cars constantly, asymmetric wins. For a crew chief lifting a long dually hauler alongside a race car, symmetric or a versatile-configuration model makes more sense.

Capacity is the last piece and the easiest to get wrong in the cheap direction. Ten thousand pounds covers essentially every passenger car, most half-ton pickups, and typical light trucks. Twelve thousand gives you margin for three-quarter-ton trucks and loaded vans. Fourteen thousand and up moves into serious commercial territory. Our rule is to size for the heaviest vehicle you will realistically ever put on it, then add margin, because capacity you did not buy is the most expensive thing in the shop.
