A quick-lube franchise operator in western Illinois called us last spring about adding a 2 post car lift to a bay that had been used for oil changes and nothing else for eleven years. The pitch from corporate was simple: start selling wheel bearing service, brake work, and suspension jobs instead of watching those tickets drive down the road to the shop three blocks over. The equipment decision took about twenty minutes. The concrete question took three weeks, a core sample, and a phone call with a structural engineer. Why Wheel Bearing Work Changes the Lift Math
Oil changes don’t need much. A drive-on pit or even a set of ramps gets a tech under a car long enough to pull a plug and spin a filter. Wheel bearing service is a different animal entirely. You need the wheel free and spinning, the hub accessible at chest height, and enough room to swing a slide hammer or set up a press without banging your knuckles on a crossmember. That means the wheels have to hang, which means a frame-engaging lift, which for a single-bay conversion almost always means two posts.
The operator we worked with in western Illinois had run the numbers on ticket value and found that a single front wheel bearing job billed out at roughly six to eight times an oil change, with parts margin on top. Three of those a week would cover the equipment inside a year. What he hadn’t accounted for was cycle count. A quick-lube bay runs a lot of vehicles, and if you’re raising and lowering forty times a day for inspections on top of the actual repair work, you’re putting commercial-duty wear on the carriage, cables, and hydraulic cylinder. We steered him away from the cheapest thing on the market and toward a Rotary SPOA10 — not because it lifts more, but because the cable and sheave assembly on that platform is built for the duty cycle a franchise bay actually sees. Buying light on a high-cycle install is how you end up replacing cables in eighteen months.
Slab Thickness: The Number Everybody Guesses Wrong
Almost every customer tells us their concrete is four inches. Almost nobody has measured. What they usually have is a slab that was poured four inches at the middle and thinned to three and a quarter near the drain, or a slab that’s six inches thick but sitting on unconsolidated fill that will let an anchor pull a cone of concrete out under load. Manufacturer specs for a standard 10,000 lb two post lift generally call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with no cracks within the anchor footprint.
The way to know is to core it. A one-inch core drill and a tape measure will tell you thickness and give you a look at the aggregate, and a competent concrete contractor will do it for a couple hundred dollars in an afternoon. In the western Illinois shop, the core came back at four and three-eighths inches at the driver’s side column location and three and seven-eighths at the passenger side, which is a common finding in older commercial slabs that were floated toward a floor drain. That half-inch difference is the whole ballgame. We could anchor one column to spec and not the other. Rebar, Wire Mesh, and Post-Tension Cable
What’s inside the slab matters as much as how thick it is. Rebar on twelve- or eighteen-inch centers is your friend structurally, but it’s an obstacle when you’re setting anchors — hitting a bar with a rotary hammer means either moving the hole or cutting the bar, and cutting structural rebar in a slab that’s carrying your column load is not a decision to make casually. We carry rebar scanners on service trucks for exactly this reason. Ten minutes of scanning saves an hour of frustration and a compromised anchor.
Wire mesh is the more common find in slabs poured from the 1970s through the 1990s, and honestly it’s less of an issue. Mesh sits too high or too low to do much and your carbide bit will chew through it. The real red flag is post-tension cable, which shows up in newer commercial construction and occasionally in residential garage slabs in subdivisions built after 2000. Drilling into a post-tension cable is dangerous and expensive, and it can compromise the structural integrity of the entire pour. If you have any reason to think your slab is post-tensioned — check the original construction documents, or look for a stamped warning near the garage door — stop and call us before anybody puts a drill to the floor. There are baseplate designs and surface-mount options that change the calculus, but that conversation has to happen up front.
When the Slab Fails: Cut and Pour Costs
The western Illinois shop ended up cutting two pads. Not the whole bay — that’s the mistake people assume they have to make. We laid out the column locations, marked footings roughly five feet by five feet by twelve inches deep under each post, and had a local concrete crew saw-cut, break out, tie new rebar into the existing slab with epoxy dowels, and pour 4,000 PSI mix. Two pads, both columns anchored into fresh concrete that exceeded spec by a wide margin.
Cost-wise, expect footing work like that to land in the low four figures for a two-post layout in most of the Midwest, depending on how far the crew has to haul spoil and whether they can get a small breaker into the bay or have to do it by hand. Add 28 days of cure time before anybody anchors anything — that’s not a suggestion, it’s chemistry, and the anchor pull-out strength you need doesn’t exist at seven days. The operator scheduled the pour for a week when he was already down a tech for vacation, which is exactly the right way to handle it. If you’re budgeting a 2 post car lift for an existing building, put a footing contingency in the number from day one. Roughly a third of the retrofits we quote need some concrete work, and the ones that need it and skip it are the ones that call us back with a leaning column.
Full Cost Breakdown, Tier by Tier
Here’s how we lay it out for customers so nobody gets surprised. The lift itself is the biggest single line but rarely more than sixty percent of the total. A well-built 10,000 lb clearfloor two post from Rotary or Challenger sits in the mid-four-figure to high-four-figure range depending on arm configuration, column height, and whether you want the shop-package extras. Baseplate models generally run a bit less than clearfloor and are the right answer when your ceiling won’t clear an overhead beam.
Freight is the line people forget. A two-post ships on a pallet at roughly 1,800 to 2,400 pounds and moves LTL to a commercial address. If you have a forklift and a dock, you’re in low three figures. If you need a liftgate and a residential delivery, that can triple. Then anchors and hardware, which the manufacturer includes but which you may need to upgrade if your concrete came back marginal. Then install labor — a straightforward install on good concrete with clear access runs a day for two techs; add time for footing coordination, electrical, or air lines. Electrical is its own line: most single-phase 220V units need a dedicated 30-amp circuit, and if your panel is on the far wall, an electrician’s invoice can rival the freight bill. Finally, ALI inspection if your state or insurer requires it. Add all of that up and a realistic all-in number for a commercial 2 post car lift install lands well north of the sticker price on the equipment — usually thirty to fifty percent above it.
Clearfloor Versus Baseplate in a Low-Ceiling Bay
Quick-lube buildings tend to have low ceilings and a lot of overhead ductwork, because nobody designed them to lift anything. The western Illinois bay measured eleven feet four inches to the lowest obstruction, which is workable but not generous. A clearfloor two post needs roughly twelve feet of clear height for a standard column with the overhead beam, and the beam has to clear the tallest vehicle at full rise — so your working number isn’t ceiling height, it’s ceiling height minus vehicle height minus rise.
Baseplate lifts solve the ceiling problem by running the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a floor plate between the columns instead of over the top. The tradeoff is a low bump strip you drive over and a slightly less clean bay floor. For a shop doing wheel bearing and brake work, that plate is a non-issue — you’re not rolling transmission jacks between the columns constantly. For a shop doing driveline work or anything requiring a floor jack to travel freely, the clearfloor is worth the ceiling headache. We ended up specifying a baseplate configuration and the operator has never mentioned the plate once. What We’d Tell a Franchise Operator Starting Over
Core the slab before you shop. Everything downstream — which model, whether you need footings, how long the project takes, what it costs — flows from that one measurement, and it’s the cheapest piece of information you’ll buy. We have watched operators sign a purchase order for equipment, take delivery, and then discover they need a month of concrete work and a 28-day cure before they can use it. That’s a lift on a pallet in the corner of the bay, taking up space and earning nothing.
Second thing: buy for cycle count, not just capacity. A 10,000 lb rating covers essentially everything a quick-lube sees, including three-quarter-ton pickups, so capacity is rarely the constraint. Duty cycle is. Cables, sheaves, latch mechanisms, and the hydraulic cylinder are the wear items, and the difference between a commercial-grade unit and a hobby-grade one shows up in year three, not year one.
