When a municipal fleet manager in Marion called us about adding a 2 post car lift to a shop that already had two four-posts and a pit, the question wasn’t really about capacity. It was about clearance. His crew pulls transmissions out of squad cars, pickups, and a couple of one-ton service trucks, and the existing bays forced techs to work around crossmembers and runways every time a transmission jack came out. We walked the building with him, tape measure and flashlight in hand, and by the end of that hour we had a lift model, a column orientation, and a door-swing fix nobody had thought about. This article is that walkthrough — the safety-first version, in the order we actually do it.

Start With the Ceiling, Not the Capacity

Almost every buyer we talk to leads with capacity. Ten thousand pounds, twelve, fourteen. Capacity matters, but it’s rarely the constraint — the ceiling is. A clearfloor overhead lift needs room for the columns, the overhead beam, the shutoff bar, and then enough space above all of that to actually get a vehicle up to a working height. In the Marion shop we measured 13 feet 2 inches to the bottom of the joists in the bay he wanted, which is comfortable. But three feet away, a run of conduit and a unit heater dropped effective clearance to about 11 feet 8 inches. That’s the number that governs, not the joist height.

We see this constantly. A homeowner in Ankeny told us he had “11 to 12 foot ceilings” and wanted a two-post; a customer in North Dakota had a hard 139-inch max height and needed a baseplate model because an overhead simply would not fit. Once effective clearance drops below roughly 12 feet, a baseplate design usually becomes the honest answer — the crossmember runs along the floor instead of over your head, so total lift height is limited only by the columns. You give up a clean floor between the posts, and you have to be deliberate about routing that floor plate so nobody trips or drags a transmission jack over it. But you gain vehicle height, and on a fleet job where techs are standing under a truck for two hours, that trade is usually worth making.

Door Swing: The Detail That Bites Municipal Shops

Ceiling clearance gets discussed. Door swing almost never does, and it’s the thing that turns a good layout into a daily annoyance. In Marion, the bay’s overhead door track ran within about 14 inches of where the driver-side column wanted to sit. The door itself cleared — barely — but the door’s counterbalance spring assembly and the operator arm did not. When the door came down, it passed through the exact volume the lift arms would occupy in their stowed position.

The fix was not exotic: we shifted the lift centerline about 20 inches toward the interior wall and rotated the whole footprint so the columns sat behind the door track rather than under it. That change cost him a little drive-through width on one side, which is why we then talked about asymmetric versus symmetric arm configuration. Beyond overhead doors, watch personnel doors, electrical panel swing — code requires clear working space in front of a panel and a lift column parked there will fail inspection — and the swing of the vehicle’s own doors once it’s on the arms. A patrol car with a full center console and a computer mount needs the driver’s door to open at least 45 degrees to let a tech in and out at ride height. Measure that before you set anchors, because after the anchors are in, your options narrow fast.

Concrete: The Only Part You Can’t Fake

Anchors do not hold a lift up. Concrete holds a lift up; anchors just connect the two. Most two-post lifts in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many manufacturers want more — six inches is a safer target, and heavier-capacity units go up from there. We’ve had callers tell us their slab is “about five inches, maybe less.” That “maybe less” is the whole ballgame.

Before we install, we core or at minimum drill a test hole and measure. If the slab is thin, cracked, or sitting on poorly compacted fill, the fix is a poured footing pad — typically a section cut out, excavated, and replaced with properly reinforced concrete sized to the manufacturer’s spec. In a municipal shop that also means checking what’s in the slab: radiant heat tubing, trench drains, and conduit runs all live in floors like that one, and hitting a PEX loop with a rotary hammer is a bad afternoon. We pulled the original slab drawings from the city’s facilities file before we drilled anything. If drawings don’t exist, a GPR scan costs a fraction of a repair. Curing time matters too — fresh footing concrete needs to reach design strength before it sees anchor torque, which usually means waiting rather than rushing the install a week early.

Why Transmission Work Changes the Spec

A shop that does brakes and tires can live with almost any two-post. A shop that drops transmissions cannot. Transmission service means a jack rolling in under the vehicle, a heavy assembly coming down at an awkward angle, and a tech spending real time overhead with both hands occupied. That pushes several decisions.

First, working height. You want the bellhousing at a height where a tech isn’t hunched or reaching overhead at full extension, and that argues for the tallest safe lift height your building allows — which loops right back to the ceiling discussion. Second, clear floor. A baseplate crossmember and a transmission jack are not friends; if transmission work is the primary use and clearance allows an overhead unit, take the overhead. Third, arm configuration and pad height. Drop-end arms with telescoping screw pads let you get under a lowered squad car’s pinch welds and also reach a one-ton’s frame rails without stacking blocks. Fourth, lock spacing. Cheap lifts have coarse lock positions; on a fleet job you want fine increments so the tech can set the vehicle exactly where the jack geometry works rather than at whatever height the locks happen to offer. We ended up specifying a 12,000 lb clearfloor unit in Marion — above the heaviest vehicle by a real margin, with the arm package built for mixed sedan and light-truck work.

Reading the Safety Systems on a 2 Post Car Lift

Every buyer should be able to name the safety systems on their own equipment. On a modern two-post there are four you care about. The mechanical locks in each column are the primary system — spring-loaded latches that engage automatically as the carriage rises and hold the load without hydraulic pressure. The equalization system, whether cable or chain, keeps the two carriages within a tolerance of each other so the vehicle can’t rack sideways. The overhead shutoff bar (or on baseplate models, a limit switch) stops travel before the vehicle contacts the ceiling. And the single-point safety release lets one person disengage both locks from one position, so nobody is reaching between a raised vehicle and a column.

What we teach every fleet crew: lower onto the locks before you work. Get the vehicle up, then lower it an inch until you hear both latches seat. Hydraulics are for moving, locks are for holding. Then walk the arms — all four restraints pinned, all four pads square on a manufacturer-approved lift point. Check the equalizer for slack, fraying, or a stretched chain at least monthly, and get the whole unit inspected annually by someone qualified. ANSI/ALI ALCTV lift inspection standards exist for a reason, and in a municipal setting an inspection record is also your defense if something ever goes wrong. We leave a laminated inspection card on every install for exactly that.

Power, Air, and What the Electrician Needs to Know Early

Two things stall two-post installs more than anything else: concrete and power. The power side is easy to solve if you handle it before the truck shows up. Most 10,000 to 12,000 lb units ship with a single-phase 208/230V motor drawing enough current to need its own 20 or 30 amp circuit with a disconnect within sight. Some commercial models are available in three-phase, which is worth taking if your building already has it — three-phase motors run cooler and last longer under duty cycle.

Where you put the power unit matters. It bolts to one column, and whichever side you choose becomes the “operator side” for the life of the installation. In Marion, the natural spot put the control handle facing away from the shop’s main walkway, meaning a tech would have to walk around the vehicle to lower it. We flipped it. Small decision, made once, that a crew feels every single day for fifteen years. Air matters too on some models — certain lock releases and some optional accessories are air-actuated, so having a drop near the operator column beats running a hose across the bay. Plan for a filter and a moisture trap; Iowa summers put a lot of water in a shop air line, and water in an air-actuated lock cylinder is corrosion waiting to happen. When a Two-Post Isn’t the Right Call

We sell two-posts, and we’ll still tell you when you shouldn’t buy one. If your primary work is alignments, a two-post is the wrong tool — you want a four-post or a scissor alignment rack with slip plates and turnplates. If your fleet includes vehicles above your lift’s rating, don’t round in your favor; a 14,000 lb unit or mobile column set may be the honest answer, and we’ve talked plenty of shops up a tier and plenty of others down one. If you need to store vehicles stacked, that’s a four-post job. And if your slab genuinely can’t be improved — say a floor over a basement or an occupied space below — mobile columns may be the only safe path.

For the Marion shop, the two-post was clearly right: mixed sedans and light trucks, heavy driveline work, techs who need unobstructed access to the underside, and a slab that tested at a solid six inches. Total install came in below what they’d budgeted, mostly because we didn’t have to touch the concrete. That’s the value of the walkthrough — the measuring is free, and it’s the cheapest hour anybody spends on the whole project.
