Why Alignment Work Changes the Warranty Conversation
A shop doing mostly brakes and oil changes puts a very different load profile on a two post than a shop doing alignment and suspension work on three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks. Alignment means the vehicle sits up for forty-five minutes to two hours at a time while somebody is under it with a pry bar, torquing cam bolts and fighting rusted adjusting sleeves. That’s sustained static load plus lateral input on the arms. It’s not abusive — it’s normal shop work — but it’s the kind of duty cycle that finds a marginal weld or a cheap arm restraint gear inside the first year.
That’s why we push eastern Nebraska truck shops toward the heavier end of the catalog even when the math says they don’t need it. What a 2 Post Car Lift Warranty Actually Covers
Most commercial-grade two post lifts from the brands we stock carry a five-year structural warranty on the columns, carriages, and arms, with one to two years on hydraulic and electrical components. That split matters more than the headline number. Structural coverage is broad and rarely disputed — if a carriage cracks or a column deflects, that’s a clear claim. Component coverage is narrower and time-limited, and it’s where most shops get surprised. Power units, cylinders, hoses, solenoids, and limit switches typically fall in the shorter window.
What’s almost never covered: cables and chains, hydraulic fluid, arm pads, rubber blocks, and anything classified as a wear item. Those are consumables, the same as brake pads on a truck. We’ve had shop owners genuinely angry that a stretched equalizer cable at eighteen months wasn’t a warranty item, and we understand the frustration — but a cable is designed to stretch and be adjusted. Also excluded on essentially every unit: damage from improper installation, inadequate concrete, and lack of documented maintenance. That last one is the quiet killer. If you can’t show that somebody greased the carriage slides and checked the cable tension, a manufacturer can and will lean on the maintenance exclusion. How a Claim Actually Moves From Phone Call to Parts on the Dock
Here’s the workflow we run when a shop calls with a failure. First, we get the model and serial off the column data plate — not the box, not the invoice, the plate. Second, we get photos and a description of the symptom. Third, and this is the step shops skip, we diagnose before we file. What warranty does not cover is labor, in almost every case. The manufacturer sends the part; you pay for the hands. Budget for that. A half-day service call is a real number, and it’s the part shops forget when they assume warranty means free.
Concrete, Anchors, and the Exclusion Nobody Reads
Every two post warranty we’ve ever read has language voiding coverage for installation on inadequate concrete. Manufacturers generally want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and for higher-capacity units the spec climbs to five or six inches. A guy in northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less.” That “maybe less” is the whole ballgame. We core-drill or use a slab scanner before anchoring anything, because we’re not interested in bolting an 11,000 lb machine to a guess.
Thin slabs, cracked slabs, and slabs poured over soft fill all show up the same way: anchor pullout under load, usually within the first year. When that happens, the manufacturer looks at the failure, sees the anchor bolt cone of concrete that came out with it, and closes the file. That’s not the lift failing — that’s the floor failing. The fix is either a saw-cut and pour of proper footing pads under each column, which is a day of concrete work and a week of cure, or a new slab section entirely. We’d rather quote that up front than get called back. When we install a 2 post car lift, we document slab thickness and anchor torque in writing and hand a copy to the shop. If a claim ever comes up, that documentation is what keeps the conversation about the lift instead of about the floor.
The Cost Breakdown: Lift, Freight, Install, and Concrete
Shops want a single number, and we understand why, but a two post project has four separate line items and pretending otherwise sets everybody up for a bad conversation. The lift itself, for a commercial-grade 10,000 to 12,000 lb clearfloor unit from a brand we’d put our name on, lands in the mid four figures. Baseplate models often run a few hundred less because you’re not paying for the overhead beam assembly, though you trade away floor clearance. Heavy-duty units in the 15,000 to 18,000 lb range for truck work step up into the high four figures and beyond.
Freight is the line item that surprises people. A two post ships as two long columns plus arms and hardware on a pallet — call it 1,800 to 2,400 lbs of freight to eastern Nebraska, and LTL rates on oversized pallets are not cheap. If you’ve got a forklift and a dock, you save on liftgate and inside delivery. Install runs a day for a crew, sometimes a day and a half if the slab needs work or the power drop isn’t in place. Then there’s electrical — most single-phase 220V units need a dedicated circuit, and if your panel is on the far wall, that’s an electrician’s half-day. Concrete work, if needed, is its own quote. All in, a properly installed commercial 2 post car lift on good concrete is typically 25 to 40 percent above the sticker price of the equipment alone.
Clearfloor Versus Baseplate for Truck Shop Duty
For alignment and heavy suspension work, we lean clearfloor almost every time. Nothing between the columns means you can roll a transmission jack, a floor jack, or a wheel dolly straight through without lifting it over a crossbar. When you’re pulling a rear axle or fighting a leaf spring pack, that unobstructed floor is worth real money in labor hours. The tradeoff is overhead: clearfloor needs the beam, and the beam eats ceiling height. On a 12,000 lb unit you’re typically looking at a total height in the twelve-and-a-half to thirteen-foot range depending on model and column extension.
Baseplate makes sense when ceiling is the hard constraint. We had a customer in North Dakota with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit, a 6,000 lb heaviest vehicle, and a tight budget — clearfloor simply wasn’t going to fit, so baseplate was the answer. The crossover plate is low enough to roll most equipment over, though a transmission jack will hang up on it. Warranty coverage is functionally identical between the two configurations, so this is purely a fit-and-workflow decision. Where it does touch warranty: baseplate units route hydraulic line and cable through the floor plate, and if a shop drives over that plate with a loaded forklift repeatedly, the resulting damage is on the shop, not the manufacturer. Truck shops with heavy floor traffic should think hard about that before choosing baseplate to save a few hundred dollars up front.
Keeping Coverage Alive: Inspection, Records, and the ALI Angle
The single best thing a shop can do to protect its warranty position is get on an annual inspection cadence and keep the paperwork. ALI-certified lift inspection is an industry standard, and in a lot of cases your liability insurance carrier already expects it. An annual inspection catches stretched cables, worn arm restraint gears, cracked anchor pads, and low fluid before any of them become a failure — and it creates a paper trail that shuts down the maintenance exclusion argument before it starts.
