A building with 12-foot walls doesn’t automatically mean 12 feet of usable clearance once you account for the lift’s own height, the vehicle height, and a safety margin above that. The columns sit independently, which some technicians prefer for stability during heavier pulling or breaker-bar work.
The floor-level cross tube, when present, is the main compromise. It’s a step-over, and if you’re rolling heavy tool carts or a low creeper across the floor constantly, you’ll learn its location fast. Most owners adjust within a week. We’ve also installed baseplate models with the connecting cable routed overhead specifically to avoid this, which is worth asking about if floor clearance matters to your workflow.
Concrete, Anchoring, and What Northern Missouri Buildings Need
Regardless of configuration, a car lift is only as good as what it’s bolted to. Pole barn slabs vary wildly in thickness, and we’ve seen everything from a proper 5-6 inch reinforced pour down to thinner slabs poured without much thought toward future equipment loads. Before we finalize any install in northern Missouri or here in Iowa, we ask about slab thickness, whether rebar or mesh was used, and the age and condition of the concrete.
A thin or unreinforced slab doesn’t necessarily rule out installation, but it changes which anchors we use and sometimes limits which lift capacity we’ll recommend. It’s far cheaper to add four extra inches of concrete now than to cut and repour later.

A collector storing passenger vehicles around 7,000 pounds or less has a lot of solid options in both overhead and baseplate styles, but capacity shouldn’t be chosen right at the edge of what you own today. Trucks, SUVs, and future purchases tend to creep heavier than the car that prompted the original purchase. We generally recommend building in headroom rather than buying to the exact curb weight of your current fleet.
