Why Slab Thickness Comes Before the Lift Decision
Every above ground lift anchors into concrete, and every anchor is only as strong as the slab around it. For a typical 9,000 to 10,000 lb capacity two-post lift, we want to see at least 4 inches of concrete, poured with a real 3,000 to 3,500 PSI mix, and cured for a minimum of 28 days before anchoring. A lot of Sioux City area garages, especially older pole buildings and detached shops built decades ago, were poured thinner than that because nobody planned for a lift when they built them. That’s not a dealbreaker, but it does change which lift you can safely run.
We’ve walked into more than a few Siouxland garages where the slab was 3 inches of unreinforced concrete over sand fill, and the homeowner had already bought a lift online before calling us.
