An RV and trailer service shop out near the Iowa-Nebraska border called us in early spring with a problem that sounds like a good problem: they had more seasonal storage customers than floor space, and they wanted to stack vehicles for the winter while still servicing them. They also had a specific request that we do not hear as often as we should — they wanted an ALI Gold certified auto lift and nothing else. A year later we went back for the annual inspection, sat down with the owner, and went through what worked, what surprised them, and what they would change. This is that review, written honestly, including the parts that were not perfect.

Why they insisted on ALI Gold
The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program administered through an accredited lab. A certified model has been tested to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard for load capacity, structural integrity, lowering speed, and safety device function, and the manufacturer’s plant is audited on an ongoing basis. The Gold label is the one you see on the certification plate. It is not marketing copy — it means an outside body loaded that design past its rating and watched what happened.
This shop’s owner had spent years in a commercial fleet operation where OSHA and their insurance carrier both asked about certification during audits. He had also seen an uncertified import unit at another business shear a lock pin under a loaded box truck. Nobody was hurt, but the vehicle dropped four inches onto the secondary lock and that was enough. When he opened his own place he made certification a hard line. We agreed with him, and it is worth saying plainly: an ALI certified auto lift is not automatically better built in every dimension than every uncertified unit, but it is the only category where somebody outside the factory has verified the claims on the spec sheet. For a shop storing customer RVs and boats overhead for six months at a time, that verification is not a luxury. Insurance underwriters in Iowa and Nebraska increasingly ask.
Sizing for seasonal vehicle storage
Storage duty is a different problem than service duty, and a lot of buyers get this wrong. For service, you care about lift speed, arm reach, and how quickly you can get a wheel off. For seasonal vehicle storage you care about static load duration, runway length, ceiling clearance, and whether the deck will hold a vehicle at height for months without any hydraulic creep. Four-post is almost always the right architecture for storage because the vehicle sits on its own tires on runways and the mechanical locks carry the load, not the cylinders.
This shop parks a mix of half-ton pickups, small travel trailers on their own axles, and one restored convertible that a customer treats like family. We specified a 12,000 lb four-post with extended 200-inch runways and a 14-foot ceiling requirement, and we added a rolling bridge jack so they could still do brake and bearing work on whatever was on the top deck. That last decision was the one they thanked us for most. Originally they were going to buy a pure storage model without jack rails and just use the unit as a parking shelf. We pushed back, because in our experience a storage bay always ends up doing service work eventually. Six months in they were pulling wheels on the top deck for winterization inspections. If we had sold them the cheaper configuration, they would have been buying a second setup by now.
Install week on a border-town slab
The building was a converted implement dealership with a slab that had been poured in sections over three decades. We cored in five places and found thicknesses from four and a half to nearly seven inches. The section where we wanted the lift was the newest and thickest, which was luck rather than planning, and it tested well above the manufacturer minimum for compressive strength.
Four-post installs are generally friendlier than two-post because the load spreads across four base plates and anchor requirements are less punishing, but level matters more. If the four columns are not within tolerance of each other, the runways twist and the cables load unevenly, which shortens cable life dramatically. We shimmed all four bases and checked diagonals until the deck read flat in both directions. Then we ran the unit through a full cycle empty, then loaded, then measured lock engagement at every latch position on all four columns. Total install was two days including electrical coordination for the 220v circuit — and yes, you need 220 for a commercial four-post, which is the question we field more than any other. We also spent an hour on the safety training that the certification program expects: lock operation, the correct lowering sequence, what to do if one corner hangs, and the daily visual walkaround. The owner made his two techs sign the training log, which we appreciated more than he probably realized.
Month three: the one real problem
In late summer they called with a complaint that the deck was drifting down about a quarter inch overnight when a vehicle sat at full height. That is exactly the kind of report we want, and exactly the kind that gets ignored at shops that never got trained. Drift on a four-post is almost never the cylinder failing catastrophically — it is usually a seal weeping, a fitting loosening, or the operator parking on the cylinder instead of setting the locks.
It was the third one. The tech was raising the vehicle to the height he wanted and stopping there, rather than raising past the nearest latch and lowering onto the locks. On a properly used four-post, the mechanical latches carry the static load and the hydraulic system does nothing while the vehicle sits. We re-trained, added a laminated card at the control station, and the drift stopped completely. We did also find a slightly damp fitting at the cylinder base, which we tightened and rechecked at the next visit. Total cost to the customer: nothing, because it was a training issue and we cover that. We tell every buyer that most auto lift service calls in the first year are usage questions, not hardware failures. That is not a criticism of anybody. Equipment this size has habits you have to learn, and the shops that ask early are the ones whose cables last a decade.
The twelve-month ALI annual inspection
The ALI standard calls for a documented annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and your insurance carrier may require it whether you like it or not. We went out at the eleven-month mark. The inspection covers anchor torque on all four bases, cable condition at every sheave and termination, lock and latch function at each position, hydraulic system integrity, runway and crossmember structure, hose and fitting condition, and control station and electrical function. We also load test.
Results after a hard first year: cables showed normal seating stretch and needed a synchronization adjustment, which took fifteen minutes. One anchor on the northeast column had backed off slightly and was retorqued. The hydraulic fluid was still clean and we topped it off rather than replacing it. All sixteen latch positions engaged crisply. The rolling jack needed grease at the pivot and one caster replaced, which is a wear item we stock. Everything else passed without comment. Total parts and labor for the inspection and the small repairs came in at a few hundred dollars, and the shop now has a signed inspection record in their file for the next insurance review. That documentation is quietly one of the biggest practical benefits of buying a certified auto lift from a distributor who also does service — the paper trail exists because somebody qualified created it, not because you photocopied a manual. What a year of storage revenue actually looked like
The business case is simple and it surprised even the owner. Before the install, their winter storage capacity was limited by floor footprint. A four-post doubled the footprint of one bay by stacking, and it did it in a way that let them charge a premium for the covered indoor spot on the upper deck. They filled both positions from October through April with no marketing beyond a note to existing customers.
Beyond storage fees, they picked up service work they would not have had. A vehicle sitting in your building for six months is a vehicle you can inspect, and winterization plus spring recommissioning turned into a package they sell now. Bearings, brakes, tires, fluid service — all of it easier when the unit is already at working height on a bay they control. The owner’s estimate was that the equipment paid for itself somewhere in month nine, counting storage revenue and incremental service tickets together, and that does not include the labor hours saved on jobs that used to require jacking. We are not going to promise those numbers to everybody, because a shop in a market without RV and boat storage demand will see something completely different. But if you have seasonal storage customers turning you away for lack of room, the payback math on a four-post is usually more favorable than people assume before they run it.
Would we specify the same setup again
Yes, with two adjustments. First, we would go longer on the runways from the start. They are at 200 inches and there have been a handful of times a longer trailer or a crew-cab dually with a bumper hitch would have benefited from another foot. Runway length is cheap when you order it and impossible to add later. Second, we would have quoted a caster kit in the original package. They asked about mobility in month eight, once they realized they occasionally wanted to shift the whole unit to clear a corner of the shop, and retrofitting is doable but it is a job.
What we would not change: the certification requirement, the four-post architecture for storage duty, the rolling jack, and the decision to core the slab before ordering. Every one of those was money spent up front that avoided a bigger bill later.
