Branch One: What Is Your Real Budget, Including Install?
The first fork is not the purchase price — it is the delivered, installed, working price. Shop owners compare a used sticker against a new sticker and forget that the used number is the beginning of a list. A used two-post pulled from a closing shop needs disassembly, a truck, a crane or forklift on both ends, new anchor bolts, likely new cables, possibly new lock assemblies, hydraulic hoses, seals, and a certified inspection before you put a customer’s car on it. Add that up honestly and a great deal on paper often lands within a few hundred dollars of a new mid-tier unit with a warranty.
Where used genuinely wins is when the equipment is local, still standing, still functional, and you can watch it cycle under load before money changes hands. For his shop the answer was mixed. Restoration work means vehicles sit up for days at a time, which is actually gentle duty — fewer cycles, more static hold. But he also does general daily maintenance for a small regular customer base, which means brake jobs, exhaust, fluid service, and tire rotations several times a day. That combination pushed him toward buying new for the primary bay and considering used for a secondary storage or teardown bay. Check sheaves for grooving, lock ladders for cracked or bent teeth, and arm pins and restraint gears for slop. Slop in the arms is not always fatal, but it is a bargaining point.
Then look at the things people hide. Pull the power unit cover and look at the reservoir fluid — milky means water, dark and burnt means overheated. Check for weeping at the cylinder rod seals and around every hose fitting. Look at the base plates for rust jacking and, critically, look at the anchor holes and the concrete they came out of. If a column was bolted to a cracked floor, the column may have been loaded off-axis for years. Finally, ask for the manufacturer, model, and serial number and call us before you buy. Every anchor gets torqued to spec, every safety lock gets verified at every position, cable tension gets set, and the unit gets cycled under load before anyone works under it. For a commercial shop, an annual inspection to ANSI/ALI standards is the standard of care regardless of whether the equipment was bought new or used, and insurance carriers increasingly ask about it. Budget for that from day one rather than discovering it during a claim.
