An RV and trailer service shop on the northeast side of Cedar Rapids bought their first commercial auto lift in the fall of 2023, and by the following fall they had learned every lesson we usually try to teach people in advance. Most of those lessons were electrical. They had a big building, decent concrete, and a service manager who knew trailers cold — but the panel in that building was a 200-amp single-phase service feeding a welder, two compressors, and a paint booth fan, and nobody had done the math. This is the story of that first year, from the day the freight truck showed up to the first annual inspection, told the way it actually happened so you can skip the parts that hurt.

Week One: The Question Everybody Asks Too Late
“Do I need 220V?” is probably the single most common question that lands in our inbox, and it almost always arrives after the equipment has already been ordered. The short answer for commercial equipment is yes. Nearly every two-post and four-post power unit we sell runs on 208-230V, and the standard configuration is single phase on a dedicated 30-amp circuit. There are 115V power units out there, mostly on the light-duty and home-garage side, but they’re slow, they draw hard on startup, and we don’t recommend them for a shop that’s cycling a lift twenty times a day.
The Cedar Rapids shop had 220V available in the building — that part was fine. What they didn’t have was a spare double-pole breaker slot, or enough headroom in the service to add one without load-shedding something else. Their electrician found this out on a Tuesday, three days before the scheduled install. We rescheduled, they added a small subpanel fed off the main, and the delay cost them about a week and a service call. Every bit of that was avoidable with a fifteen-minute panel photo sent to us in advance. We ask for that photo on every quote now, partly because of this job. Single Phase vs Three Phase: When It’s Worth Chasing
If your building already has three-phase service, order the three-phase power unit. It’s usually a no-cost or low-cost option at time of purchase, the motor runs cooler, it draws less current per leg, and the rise time is typically a couple seconds faster. Over a decade of daily cycles that adds up in both motor life and technician patience. Three-phase units also tend to have simpler, more durable starters.
If you don’t have three-phase, do not go chase it just for a lift. Bringing three-phase to a building that doesn’t have it means dealing with the utility, and in the Cedar Rapids area that has run anywhere from a few thousand dollars to genuinely eye-watering depending on how far the nearest transformer is. A rotary phase converter is an option some shops use, and it works, but it adds a box to maintain and it’s usually only worth it if you’ve got a lathe or a big compressor that also wants three phase. For a single lift, a single-phase power unit on a properly sized 30-amp circuit does the job every day without complaint. The shop in this story went single phase, and a year in, the motor has given them zero trouble. What they did do was oversize the wire slightly on a long run, which was the right call.
Install Day: What Actually Happened
Install went in over one long day. We core-tested the slab first — six inches, well over the 3,000 PSI minimum, poured in 2016 with rebar, which is about as good as it gets in an Iowa service building. Columns went up, anchors torqued to spec, arms hung, cables routed and tensioned, hydraulic hose run, fluid added, and then the part everybody forgets: bleeding the system and cycling the lift a dozen times empty before a vehicle ever touches it.
The surprise on install day was the overhead door. Their bay door track swung back into the space where the crossbeam wanted to sit, which we’d caught during the site visit, so we’d already positioned the columns eighteen inches further into the bay than the shop originally sketched. That shifted the whole layout and meant the air drop they’d already plumbed was in the wrong place. Minor, but it’s the kind of thing that turns into an argument if it’s discovered by surprise. This is the entire argument for a real site visit instead of a phone quote. We measured, we adjusted, and the door still clears with a full-size van in the air. Months Two Through Six: Daily Maintenance Reality
An RV and trailer shop is a strange duty cycle for a two-post. A lot of what comes through the door is too long, too heavy, or too oddly balanced for a standard automotive setup — a 24-foot enclosed trailer isn’t going on a two-post at all. What the shop found was that the equipment earned its keep on the tow vehicles: brake jobs on three-quarter-ton pickups, bearing repacks on the trucks pulling the trailers, exhaust and driveline work, and a steady stream of oil changes and inspections on the customer’s daily drivers.
They cycled it far more than they expected — averaging north of fifteen lifts a day by month four. That’s real duty. At that rate, hydraulic fluid level checks stop being an annual thing and become a monthly thing, and the arm restraint gears see enough engagement that you can hear when one starts to get lazy. They also learned to stop parking the shop vacuum in the swing path. Small operational stuff, but the first six months of ownership are mostly about building habits. The single best habit they built was checking the lock latches audibly on every raise — you should hear all four click, and if you don’t, something needs attention before the next vehicle. That one habit has probably prevented more incidents in Iowa shops than any inspection program.
The Electrical Problem That Showed Up in Month Eight
In late spring, the lift started stalling partway up with heavier trucks on it. Motor would run, pressure would build, and then it would just quit climbing. Their first assumption was a hydraulic problem — bad seals, air in the system, weak pump. Reasonable guess, wrong guess.
What we found was voltage drop. The subpanel their electrician had added was fed with conductors sized for the breaker rating but the run from the main was long, and when the paint booth fan and a compressor kicked in simultaneously, the voltage at the power unit sagged low enough that the motor couldn’t develop full torque under load. The motor was fine. The pump was fine. The wire was undersized for the distance. They pulled a heavier gauge conductor on that run and the problem vanished permanently. This is one of the most common false alarms we get called out for, and it’s worth knowing about: if your lift is slow or stalling only when other equipment runs, or only on hot afternoons, measure voltage at the power unit under load before you start replacing hydraulic parts. Year One Inspection: What We Found on This Auto Lift
At twelve months we came back for the annual inspection, which ALI recommends for every unit in commercial service and which most insurance carriers will ask about eventually. Everything structural was clean. Anchors held torque. Columns were plumb within tolerance. Cylinders were dry with no weeping at the rod seals.
Two findings. First, the equalization cables had stretched — normal for the first year, especially at that duty cycle — and the carriages were out of level by close to an inch. Fifteen minutes of adjustment fixed it, but left alone for another year that becomes uneven loading and premature sheave wear. Second, one arm restraint gear was worn enough that engagement felt vague. We replaced it out of stock. Total visit was under two hours. That’s what a healthy first year looks like on a well-installed auto lift: nothing dramatic, two adjustments, back to work. The shops that get in trouble are the ones that skip year one entirely and then discover a frayed cable in year four.
