A collector in Marion called us in the spring with four cars, a heated shop, and a problem most enthusiasts eventually run into: he was out of floor space and tired of crawling under a jack stand to chase a pull on his restored coupe. We spent a year working with him — quoting, installing, checking in, and eventually doing his first real service call. February: The Quote Conversation That Changed the Plan

He came to us wanting a two-post. That is almost always the first instinct — two-posts are what people picture when they picture a shop. But once we asked what he actually did in the building, the picture shifted. He wanted to store a car up and park another underneath through the winter. He wanted to set toe and camber himself on a car he had just rebuilt the front suspension on. And he only had 11 feet 6 inches of clear height under the light fixtures.

Those three facts pointed hard at a four-post. Storage is what four-posts do best, the alignment-capable versions come with turnplate pockets and slip plates already cut into the runways, and a four-post does not require you to bolt into concrete the way a two-post does, which mattered because his slab was an unknown quantity from a 1990s pour. We talked through the tradeoff: a four-post is worse for brake and suspension work because the wheels stay loaded, which is why we spec’d a rolling bridge jack with it. That added to the quote, but it turned a storage rack into a genuine service platform. He also asked about a mid-rise scissor as a supplement, and we told him honestly that with a bridge jack he probably would not need one for a few years. Sell someone less than they asked for and they trust the next thing you say.

April: Install Day and the Things That Always Come Up

Freight arrived on a Tuesday. A four-post ships heavy and long, and even in a Marion driveway with good access, you want either a liftgate or equipment on site. We were there when the truck came, which we recommend for anyone taking delivery — inspecting for shipping damage before you sign matters, because once you sign clean, a bent runway becomes your problem.

Assembly on a four-post is mostly a day of careful work: set the columns, run the cables over the sheaves, level everything, fill and bleed. The two things that always come up are floor level and cable tension. His shop floor sloped about three-quarters of an inch across the footprint, which is completely normal for a slab poured with drainage in mind and completely unacceptable for alignment work. We shimmed under the column base plates until the runways read dead level on a precision level in both directions. That shimming step is what separates a rack you can align on from a rack you can only store on. The second item was cable tension. Four cables have to share load evenly or the platform racks and the safety locks engage unevenly. We set them, cycled the unit a dozen times, and set them again — because new cable stretches. We told him to expect to readjust at thirty days, and we wrote it on the manual. That single note saved him a service call later.

May Through August: Break-In and Learning the Machine

The first summer is mostly learning habits. He called twice in the first month, both times with questions that are completely normal for a new owner. The first was a slow drift — the platform settling a quarter inch overnight with a car parked up. That is almost always either air still in the system or the check valve seating on debris, and in his case a couple more full-travel bleed cycles cleared it. The second call was about noise from the sheaves, which turned out to be exactly what it usually is: dry cable. A little cable lube and it went quiet.

He also learned the discipline that makes an auto lift last. Always lower onto the mechanical locks rather than leaving a load on hydraulics. Never leave the unit parked at a random height with a car on it for weeks. Check the fluid with the platform all the way down. Sweep the runways before you drive on, because a stone under a tire on an alignment rack throws your readings. Around July he did his first full alignment — a straightforward toe-and-camber setup on the coupe — and reported that having the car at chest height changed the job from an ordeal into an afternoon. That is the intangible return that never shows up in a cost-of-ownership table but is the actual reason people buy this equipment.

October: The Thirty-Day Adjustment We Warned Him About

He was late on it, which is typical, but he did call. By fall the cables had stretched enough that one corner sat noticeably low and the locks were not all dropping into the same ladder rung. This is the single most common first-year issue on a four-post and it is not a defect — it is break-in. Wire rope elongates under initial load, and every manufacturer expects it.

We could have driven out, but we walked him through it on the phone in about fifteen minutes because he was comfortable with a wrench. Raise the platform, engage locks, take the load off the cables, adjust the take-up nuts a flat or two at a time on the low corners, cycle, recheck. Verify all four locks engage simultaneously by listening — they should click as one sound, not four. He got it dialed and re-leveled the runways with a straightedge afterward. That call cost him nothing and cost us fifteen minutes, and it is the kind of thing we would rather do than sell a trip charge. Where we do insist on being physically present is anything involving the hydraulic system under load, safety lock components, or a suspected structural issue. January: First Real Service Visit and What It Found

We did his first paid annual inspection about ten months after install. It took under an hour and it found three things, none of them alarming. The cables had settled again slightly and got a final adjustment — after the second round they generally stabilize for years. The hydraulic fluid was a touch low from the bleeding earlier in the year and got topped off. And one lock ladder had a small burr from a rough engagement that we filed smooth so the latch would not wear a groove.

That is a typical year-one inspection on well-installed equipment: three small findings, an hour of labor, and a report that says everything is within spec. Compare that to what we find on units that have gone five years without anyone looking at them — frayed cable strands at the swage, latches packed with dust that will not fully engage, cylinder weeping onto the floor, anchor nuts backed off. The inspection is not upselling. It is the cheapest line item in twenty years of ownership and it is the one that determines whether year fifteen is a cable set or a scrapped machine. Every auto lift we service on an annual schedule outlives the ones we only see when something breaks, and it is not close.

The Twenty-Year Number, Now That We Have a Baseline

With one full year of data, here is the realistic projection we gave him. Year zero was the equipment, freight, bridge jack, shimming, and installation labor — the biggest single number, and the only one most buyers think about. Years one through seven should be an annual inspection, a jug of hydraulic fluid every few years, and cable lube. Genuinely small money.

Somewhere in the eight-to-fifteen window, on a home-duty cycle, expect a full cable set. On his four-post that is four cables plus sheave inspection, and it is a half-day job. Somewhere in the same window, expect the cylinder to need a seal kit — Iowa shops that go cold in winter and warm in summer are hard on seals. Power unit motors sometimes make it thirty years and sometimes fail at twelve; budget for one repair or replacement across the span. Add miscellaneous hardware, a lock ladder or slider here and there, and a couple of unscheduled service calls. Totaled across twenty years, that maintenance figure lands well under half the original purchase price on a brand with real parts support — and the equipment still has resale value at the end. The variable that wrecks the math is buying something with no parts channel.
