Most people shopping automotive two post lifts for a home garage start in the wrong place — they start with capacity, and capacity is almost never what stops the project. We got a call from a homeowner outside Waukee who wanted to pull the oil pan gasket on a project car and was tired of doing it on jack stands with a creeper and a droplight. He’d already picked a model. What he hadn’t checked was that his detached shop was fed by a single 30-amp subpanel that was already running a compressor, a welder, and the lights. That’s the conversation this guide is built around: the things a first-time buyer doesn’t know to ask until an installer is standing in the driveway with a truck.

Start With the Job, Not the Spec Sheet
An oil pan gasket is a good example of why the intended job drives the purchase. That repair needs the car high enough that you can stand under it comfortably, needs the crossmember area accessible, and needs the vehicle stable for hours while you scrape, clean, and re-seal. A four-post with a rolling jack can do it but you’re fighting the runways. A mid-rise scissor gets you off the floor but not to standing height. A two-post gives you a clean, open underside and full standing room, which is exactly why it’s the default for real repair work.
The tradeoff is that it demands more from the building. Four-post units sit on the slab and spread load across a wide footprint. Two-post columns concentrate everything into anchor bolts pulling against concrete, and they need vertical space for the vehicle plus the structure above it. So the honest framing for a first-time buyer is this: if you’re mostly storing cars, look at four-post. If you’re doing brake jobs, exhaust, suspension, transmissions, and oil pan gaskets, you want a two-post and you should build the rest of the project around that decision. Almost every home shop owner we talk to who bought storage-first ends up wishing they’d bought repair-first.
Electrical: The Single-Phase Reality in a Home Shop
Here’s where most home projects stall. Nearly all residential-market two-post equipment ships with a 220-volt single-phase power unit, typically a 2 to 3 horsepower motor drawing roughly 20 to 25 amps at startup. That means a dedicated 220V circuit — usually 30 amp, on its own breaker, with the right wire gauge for the run length. Not shared with the welder. Not tapped off the compressor circuit.
The wrinkle in detached garages and pole buildings is the feeder. A shop fed by a 60-amp subpanel might technically have room, but if the compressor kicks on while the lift is rising you’ll see voltage sag, and a motor running under-voltage runs hot and dies early. Long feeder runs make it worse — 150 feet of undersized wire from the house panel to a shop is one of the most common problems we find. We tell people to have an electrician size the feeder before ordering anything. Some manufacturers offer 110-volt power units for lighter home models, and they work, but they’re slow and they pull hard on startup. Three-phase is standard in commercial shops and is generally not an option at a house without a rotary phase converter, which adds cost and complexity. Get the electrical answered first and the rest of the project goes smoothly.
Concrete: Four Inches Is the Floor, Not the Target
Anchor bolts hold the columns down, and concrete holds the anchor bolts. Most manufacturers of automotive two post lifts specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, unreinforced, with the slab cured at least 28 days. Read that as a minimum, not a recommendation. We prefer to see five or six inches under a two-post, and in new construction we tell people to pour a thickened pad in the lift bay while the forms are still up — it’s cheap then and expensive later.
A homeowner in northern Missouri called us with a slab he thought was about five inches but might be less, and that uncertainty is extremely common. Nobody remembers what their 1998 pole barn was poured to. The fix is straightforward: drill a test hole in an inconspicuous spot, or core a small sample. It takes ten minutes and it tells you whether you’re anchoring or whether you need to cut and pour a pad. Also watch for radiant floor heat. If there’s PEX in that slab, you cannot drill blind — we’ve seen it hit, and a flooded garage floor is a bad day. Post-tension cable slabs are the other hard stop. Know what’s in your concrete before a bit touches it.
Ceiling Height, Overhead Bars, and Garage Doors
Ceiling height determines configuration more than anything else. An overhead-style two-post puts a crossbar with the shutoff switch between the columns at the top, and standard versions want roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling. A 30×40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls — a very common Iowa home shop — is right at the edge, and whether it works depends on truss depth, lighting, and whether you’ve got a door opener in the way.
Baseplate models move the connection to the floor and can fit under 10 to 11 feet, sometimes less with a low-ceiling variant. The cost is a bar you step over all day and slightly restricted drive-through. For most home garages doing repair work, that’s an easy trade. The other measurement people forget is the garage door track and opener. A raised sectional door can eat a foot of usable height right where you need it, and the opener rail often sits dead center in the bay. We’ve relocated more openers than we can count. Measure from finished floor to the lowest permanent obstruction, not to the peak, and give us that number when you call. Also check your door opening width — you need to get the vehicle in with the arms swung clear, which is tighter than people expect in a two-car garage.
Capacity, Arms, and Low-Profile Vehicles
For a home shop working on passenger cars and light trucks, a 9,000 or 10,000 lb unit covers essentially everything you’ll ever put on it. We hear “my heaviest vehicle is 6,000 pounds” constantly, and the honest answer is that 10,000 lb is still the right buy — the price gap is small, the extra margin costs nothing in daily use, and it protects resale if you sell the shop.
Arm configuration matters more than the number on the plate. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and use shorter front arms, which lets you open the car doors — a genuine quality-of-life difference when you’re getting in and out to check something during a gasket job. Symmetric designs center the vehicle and handle long-wheelbase trucks better. Three-stage front arms reach farther under low, wide vehicles, and if you’re working on anything with a low front air dam or a lowered suspension, that’s the option to get. Low-profile arm and pad kits are worth the small upcharge for a first-time buyer who doesn’t yet know what they’ll be lifting in five years. New Versus Used: What We Tell First-Time Buyers
Plenty of home shoppers ask about used equipment, and we won’t talk anyone out of a good used machine. But there are rules. Buy a brand with a live parts channel — for home-market work that means BendPak or Atlas, and for anything commercial-grade coming out of a shop, Rotary or Challenger. If you can’t buy cables, arm restraint gears, and cylinder seals for it in five years, it’s scrap with a long lead time.
Inspect the cables at the sheaves, look at the carriage for rust and elongation at the pin holes, check the arm restraints for rounded teeth, and look at the columns where they meet the floor for corrosion. Budget for a full rebuild kit and professional installation on top of the purchase price, because a used unit almost always needs cables and seals. When a buyer tells us they’re trying to stay near the low four figures for the equipment, we’re upfront: at that number you’re shopping the bottom of the new market or a used unit that will need work. Automotive two post lifts are one of the few things in a garage where the cheap option can genuinely hurt somebody, so we’d rather see a buyer wait a season and buy right than get something in the bay this month.
Installation, Inspection, and What Happens on Day One
A professional install on a home two-post typically runs most of a day. We unload and stage the columns, lay out the bay to the manufacturer’s spec, verify the floor is level within tolerance, drill and set anchors, plumb the columns, run and tension the cables, hook up hydraulics and power, bleed the system, and then cycle it repeatedly under load while checking lock engagement at every position. Then we torque the anchors, shim where the slab isn’t flat, and walk the owner through daily operation and the safety checks.
Some buyers install their own, and it’s genuinely doable if you’re mechanically competent, have a way to stand the columns safely, and read the manual twice. What we ask is that you don’t skip the load testing and the anchor torque check after the first thirty days — anchors seat and need re-torquing, and that step gets skipped constantly. After that, the maintenance on automotive two post lifts is light: grease the carriage slides, check cable tension and equalization a couple times a year, watch for hydraulic weeping, and inspect the arm restraints.
