A restoration shop owner in northeast Iowa called us with a budget number and nothing else: he had roughly four thousand dollars set aside, a 1968 Mustang project on jack stands, and a steady side business doing oil changes and fluid service for neighbors and farm trucks. He wanted to know which of the automotive two post lifts on the market he could actually get for that money, and whether his 1990s shop floor would hold one. That call is the reason we built the decision tree below. It walks the same path we walk with every caller, in order, from budget through slab through capacity through arm configuration — because skipping steps is how people end up with a lift they can’t safely anchor.

Step One: Be Honest About the Budget Tier

Everything downstream depends on this, so start here. In our experience there are three practical tiers. The entry tier gets you a 9,000 to 10,000 pound baseplate or clearfloor unit from a value brand — think Atlas or an entry BendPak — with a basic power unit, standard arms, and no install. The mid tier steps into heavier steel, better lock design, three-stage front arms, and often a longer warranty. The top tier is commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger, built for a shop that will cycle it thousands of times a year for two decades.

The restoration owner’s four-thousand-dollar number lands squarely in the entry tier, and that is fine — we are not going to pretend otherwise or upsell someone doing oil changes and fluid service on their own project cars. What we will say is that the entry tier assumes you are doing your own install, your slab already meets spec, and your ceiling accommodates a stock overhead. If any of those three assumptions break, the cost jumps and the tier changes. We have quoted plenty of folks who thought they were buying an entry-tier lift and discovered the concrete work cost more than the equipment. Getting real about the budget first means the rest of the decision tree either confirms your number or tells you early that it needs to move.

Step Two: Measure the Slab Before You Shop

This is the branch that stops the most projects. Nearly every 10,000 pound two post requires at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured a minimum of 28 days, and higher-capacity models want more. Northeast Iowa has a lot of older pole buildings and shop additions where the slab was poured to whatever depth the crew felt like that day. We have measured floors at three inches and we have measured floors at seven.

Rebar and mesh matter almost as much as depth. A four-inch slab with a proper grid of rebar on chairs and a compacted base under it will hold anchors far better than a five-inch slab poured over soft fill with no reinforcement. That said, rebar creates its own problem: when you hammer-drill anchor holes and hit a bar, you either move the hole or you core through, and moving the hole can push you out of the manufacturer’s anchor pattern. This is why we scan or core before drilling on any install where the slab history is unknown. One caller in Missouri told us his concrete was “about five inches, maybe less” — that “maybe less” is exactly the phrase that means core it. If your slab fails the check, your realistic paths are cutting and pouring two engineered pads or switching to a four-post that spreads load across a bigger footprint without anchoring at all.

Step Three: Capacity, and Why Restoration Shops Underbuy

Restoration guys almost always underestimate. A finished 1968 Mustang weighs around 3,200 pounds, so a 9,000 pound lift sounds like triple the margin you need. Then a customer shows up with a K5 Blazer project, or a 1976 Suburban, or a farm neighbor asks if you can do a fluid service on a three-quarter-ton diesel, and suddenly you are eyeballing a 7,800 pound truck on a 9,000 pound lift with the weight distributed badly.

Our rule of thumb: take the heaviest vehicle you can imagine touching in the next ten years, add 20 percent, and buy the next capacity tier up from that. For most one-man restoration and general service shops that means 10,000 or 12,000 pounds, and the step from 10K to 12K in most product lines is a modest price difference for meaningfully heavier columns, arms, and cables. Where 15,000 and 18,000 pound automotive two post lifts start making sense is when duallies, box trucks, or shuttle vans are regular customers. If that is your world, also plan for wider column spacing and taller overall height. We would rather talk you into one extra capacity tier now than sell you a cable set every eighteen months because you are running the equipment at 95 percent of rating all day.

Step Four: Overhead or Baseplate

Now measure ceiling height to the lowest obstruction — trusses, lights, garage door tracks, the open position of a sectional door. Most clearfloor overhead automotive two post lifts need somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 to 13 feet, and some need more. A caller in North Dakota had a hard 139-inch maximum, which is about 11 feet 7 inches, and that immediately eliminated every overhead model on his short list. He needed a baseplate.

The tradeoff is straightforward. Overhead designs give you a clean, uninterrupted floor, which restoration shops love when they are rolling engine hoists, creepers, and transmission jacks around all day. Baseplate designs put a low steel plate between the columns carrying the hydraulic hose and equalization cables, so you gain unlimited overhead clearance but you have a small ridge to roll over. Some people hate it; most stop noticing it in a month. Baseplate also tends to be a little easier for a DIY install because you are not lifting a heavy crossbeam into position by yourself. If your building has a low sidewall — the 12-foot pole-barn walls we see constantly across northeast Iowa — baseplate is usually the answer. Step Five: Arm Configuration and Low-Profile Reality

Symmetric or asymmetric is the last big fork. Symmetric puts columns square to each other with equal-length arms, centers the vehicle between the posts, and gives excellent stability for trucks and long-wheelbase vehicles — but the doors open into the columns on a sedan. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses shorter front arms, moving the vehicle rearward so doors clear. Most general repair shops prefer asymmetric. Restoration shops are split, because they want door access on a coupe but also want to lift heavy old iron.

For the northeast Iowa restoration owner we recommended an asymmetric configuration with three-stage front arms and low-profile arm pads. That combination matters if you touch anything slammed, and a lot of restoration and custom work sits low. Three-stage arms telescope shorter for a Mustang and longer for a pickup, which is the flexibility a mixed-vehicle shop needs. Also budget for adapters: truck adapter extensions, frame-cradle pads, and stackable rubber blocks. People spend thousands on automotive two post lifts and then try to lift a unibody classic on the bare steel pads, which chews up rockers. A hundred dollars of correct adapters saves a customer’s paint and your reputation. Ask us what adapters ship standard with the model you are considering, because it varies a lot between brands.

Step Six: Install It Yourself or Have Us Do It

Plenty of buyers tell us up front they do not want install, and we respect that — a mechanically capable person with a forklift or a skid steer, a rotary hammer, a torque wrench, and a helper can absolutely set a two post. If that is you, do these things: verify slab depth first, plumb and shim the columns properly, torque anchors to the exact spec in the manual with a calibrated wrench, route the equalization cables per the diagram without kinks, bleed the cylinders fully, and load-test with a real vehicle before you trust it.
Where DIY installs go wrong is shimming and anchor torque. We have been called out to shops where the carriages bound up halfway through travel because the columns were a degree out of plumb, and to others where anchors were finger-tight in oversized holes.
