Automotive two post lifts change the way a car collector works, and we watched that happen up close over the last twelve months with a customer outside Council Bluffs who keeps six vehicles in a heated shop and does every bit of his own exhaust and driveline work. When he called us he had been rolling under cars on a creeper for eighteen years, chasing header bolts on a small-block with a mirror and a prayer. We handled the site survey, the anchoring, the wiring coordination, and the first annual service. This is what that first year actually looked like — the good, the surprises, and the cable inspection habits we drilled into him from day one so his equipment outlives the cars sitting on it.

The Shop He Started With, and Why a Two-Post Won
His building is a 32×48 insulated shop with a 12-foot sidewall and a 14-foot overhead door on the gable end. Concrete was poured in 2016 at a nominal five inches with fiber mesh, which sounded fine until we cored it and found four and a quarter inches in the bay he wanted. That mattered. We ended up cutting two three-by-three pads, pouring 4,000 PSI mix eight inches deep, and waiting the full cure before anchoring. That single decision is the difference between a lift that stands for twenty years and one that walks its base plate over time.
He had considered a four-post for storage, and honestly a four-post would have been the easier install. But his real use case was exhaust and driveline work — dropping a driveshaft, cutting and rewelding a mid-pipe, pulling a transmission crossmember. Runways get in the way of all of that. A clear-floor two-post opens the entire underside of the car with nothing between you and the tunnel. We told him what we tell everyone in that position: if you spend more time under the car than looking at it, the two-post is the right call. Storage is a bonus you buy separately with a four-post later.
Choosing Capacity, Column Style, and Arm Configuration
His heaviest vehicle is a three-quarter-ton pickup at roughly 6,800 pounds loaded, and the collection runs down to a 2,400-pound roadster. A 10,000-pound asymmetric model covered everything with margin. We steered him away from oversizing. People assume more capacity is always better, but a 15,000-pound unit has taller columns, wider arm spread, and a footprint that would have eaten his walkway. Capacity should follow your heaviest realistic vehicle plus a comfortable buffer, not your ego.
Ceiling height decided the column style. At 12 feet clear he could run an overhead-style crossbar, which is generally the more economical configuration and keeps the floor completely clean. Had he been at ten feet, we would have gone baseplate, and we would have talked through the floor plate as a trip and rolling-toolbox hazard. Arms were the other conversation. Low-profile front arms with three-stage telescoping were non-negotiable for the roadster, which sits with about four inches of pinch-weld clearance. Standard arms would have meant driving up on ramps every single time, and a lift you have to fight is a lift you stop using. We also spec’d taller stackable adapters for the pickup so the arms clear the rocker trim without contortions.
Installation Week: What Actually Happened
Install day on a residential shop is not the same as a dealership. There is no forklift, no dock, and usually no second set of hands. Our crew brought a gantry and a pallet jack, unloaded the columns, and set them with the truck-side column against the wall to preserve his walk-around space. Anchoring came first, then plumb, then the equalization cables and hydraulic lines. Total time on site was under a day, plus the return trip for final adjustment after the concrete pads had another week under them.
The part he did not expect was electrical. Most automotive two post lifts in a home shop run a 220V single-phase power unit, and his shop had one 220 circuit already committed to a welder. We coordinated with a local electrician for a dedicated 30-amp circuit terminated within reach of the column, because power unit motors do not like sharing with an inverter welder mid-cycle. We also set the overhead shutoff bar so the crossbar stops the lift before a roof rack or antenna finds his ceiling joists. That bar has already saved him once, on a wagon with a factory shark fin he forgot about. Small detail, big save.
Month Three: Exhaust and Driveline Work at Chest Height
The first real test was a full stainless exhaust on the pickup. On the ground that is a two-weekend job with a jack, four stands, and a sore back. On the lift he had it cut, fit, tacked, and hung in an afternoon. He told us the thing that surprised him most was not the speed — it was the quality of his own work. When you can stand upright and see both hangers at once, your welds get straight and your alignment gets honest.
Driveline work sold him even harder. Pulling a two-piece driveshaft with a center support bearing means holding weight, keeping the yoke indexed, and getting a socket on a carrier bolt that lives six inches from a frame rail. With the truck at chest height and a transmission jack rolled under, that job stopped being a wrestling match. He also started catching things he never would have found — a torn CV boot, a weeping pinion seal, a rusted-through hanger on the roadster’s resonator. That is the underrated benefit of automotive two post lifts in a collector shop. You are not just fixing what broke, you are seeing what is about to.
Cable Inspection: The Habit We Made Him Build
Every two-post has equalization cables that keep the carriages level. They do not lift the car — the hydraulic cylinders do that — but if a cable fails, one side drops out of sync and the load shifts. That is the failure mode nobody wants to experience. So on handover we walked him through a monthly visual and an annual hands-on inspection, and we wrote it on a laminated card zip-tied to the column.
The monthly check takes four minutes. Run the carriages to mid-height, then look at the cable where it exits each sheave and where it terminates at the threaded stud. You are hunting for broken strands, sometimes called meathooks, plus kinks, flat spots, corrosion bleeding orange out of the lay, and any sheave that is grooved, seized, or wobbling. Then drop the lift to the ground and check that both carriages land within a quarter inch of each other. Uneven landing is the earliest signal that a cable has stretched or a nut has backed off. The annual is deeper: we tension both cables to spec, verify the slack-cable safety trips, inspect the sheave pins, and lubricate with a penetrating cable lube rather than heavy grease, which just traps grit. Broken strands anywhere, a kink you can feel, or corrosion at the swage means replacement — and cables get replaced in pairs, always.
The First Annual Service and What We Found
We came back at the eleven-month mark. Cables were in good shape, which is what we expected in a heated, dry shop with one attentive owner. Tension had relaxed slightly on the offside, roughly what you get from initial constructional stretch as the strands seat, so we re-tensioned both and reset the lock ladder engagement. Anchor bolts got torque-checked; two were a few foot-pounds light, which is completely normal after a year of load cycles. Hydraulic fluid was down about half an inch in the reservoir with no external leak — that is fluid finding its way into cylinder volume as the seals bed in, not a problem.
What did need attention was the arm restraint gear on the passenger-side rear arm. The pins had worn a flat spot from repeated engagement and were not seating crisply. We replaced them from stock, and that is the case we always make for buying from a distributor that carries parts rather than a mail-order box. Wear items on automotive two post lifts are cheap and available if you know what you need. They become a three-week ordeal if you are trying to identify a pin from a blurry photo. We also topped the reservoir, cleaned the lowering valve screen, and cycled the unit twenty times under load to confirm both carriages moved together.

Three things. First, core your concrete before you shop. Nearly every problem we solve on residential installs traces back to a slab that was thinner or weaker than the owner believed. A core sample is inexpensive and it either confirms your plan or saves you from a very expensive mistake. Second, buy the arms you actually need. Low-profile telescoping arms and a good set of adapters cost a fraction of the lift and determine whether you use the thing every weekend or once a quarter. Third, treat cable inspection as maintenance, not paranoia. Four minutes a month is the cheapest insurance in your shop.
