The best argument we’ve ever heard for automotive two post lifts came from a collector in West Des Moines who owned six cars and could only comfortably work on none of them. So he added a two-post in the next bay, and we installed it on a cold February morning. Why a Collector Adds a Two-Post Next to a Four-Post

Four-post lifts are storage machines. Drive on, raise, park another car underneath, walk away. They’re stable, they’re forgiving about slab thickness, and they don’t require you to know where the pinch welds are. What they’re bad at is wheels-free access and unobstructed underbody work. The runways sit directly under the rockers, which is exactly where you want to be standing when you’re wrestling a rusty exhaust hanger or lining up a driveshaft yoke. You can add a rolling jack and get partway there, but you’re still working around two steel rails.

Our West Des Moines customer figured this out the hard way while replacing a mid-pipe on a British roadster. He spent an hour of a two-hour job just repositioning himself. That’s when he called about automotive two post lifts. His shop was a 40×40 with a level slab and 13-foot sidewalls, which is close to ideal — enough ceiling for an overhead model and enough width that the columns didn’t crowd the four-post next door. The pitch we made was simple: keep the four-post for storage, add a two-post for work, and stop trying to make one machine do both jobs. That’s the layout most serious collectors end up at, and it’s cheaper than one giant compromise.

Brand History Matters More Than the Spec Sheet

He did his homework before calling us, and he did it the right way — he researched companies, not products. Rotary has been building lifts in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s and effectively invented the automotive hydraulic lift; their two-post line has a documented parts history going back decades. Challenger has built a strong commercial reputation and a service network that actually answers the phone. What he avoided, deliberately, was the rotating cast of import brands that appear on marketplace listings under a new name every few years. We get calls constantly from people who bought one of those and now need a lock release cable or an equalizer sheave, and the answer is often that no such part exists in any catalog. That’s the whole ballgame. A two-post column set is a simple machine — steel, cable, a cylinder, and some latches. It doesn’t wear out so much as it needs specific replaceable pieces. If those pieces can’t be sourced in year twelve, the lift is scrap regardless of how well it was welded. Install Day: February, Concrete, and a Level Check

Install went about as smoothly as they go, which mostly comes down to prep. His slab was a known quantity — six inches, well-cured, poured flat with only a slight pitch. We laid out the column positions, checked the bay width against the four-post to make sure both could be used simultaneously, and drilled. Anchor work in good concrete is satisfying; anchor work in questionable concrete is where installs go sideways, which is why we ask about the pour before we ever load a truck.

The pieces that took the longest weren’t the columns. Routing and tensioning the equalizer cables so both carriages hit the same lock at the same time is a fussy job, and getting it right on day one prevents a decade of uneven lifting and premature cable wear. Then there was electrical — his panel was on the wrong wall and he’d needed an electrician to run a dedicated 220V circuit before we arrived. That’s the single most common scheduling delay we hit, and we now ask about it on the first call. By early afternoon we’d cycled the unit empty a dozen times, bled the cylinder, load-tested it with his heaviest car, and walked him through the daily and monthly checks. He put a vehicle in the air himself before we left the driveway, which is how we like to end an install.

The First Exhaust Job: What Actually Changed

Three weeks later he called just to tell us about the exhaust job. Same roadster, different section of pipe. On the four-post it had been a contortionist exercise. On the two-post, wheels hanging free and the whole underbody open from bumper to bumper, he had the system down in under an hour with a helper. He mentioned two things specifically. First, being able to walk the full length of the car without stepping over a runway completely changed how he worked — he wasn’t setting the sawzall down and picking it back up twelve times.

Second, wheels-free mattered more than he expected for driveline work. Pulling a driveshaft means the rear needs to rotate freely to line up the flange bolts, and on a four-post the wheels are planted. With the suspension hanging, he could spin the shaft by hand and index it in seconds. That combination — open underbody plus free-hanging suspension — is the functional case for automotive two post lifts over anything else in a hobby shop. It’s not about capacity or top speed. It’s about where the steel isn’t. Month Eleven: The Parts Call

Eleven months in, he called about a noise. Slight chirp from one column near the top of travel. We had him look at the sheave at the top of the carriage — the cable was tracking fine, but the pin needed grease, which is a five-minute fix and one of the three maintenance items we hand every customer on install day. That’s it. That was the whole crisis.

But the call itself is why we tell this story. He read us the model and serial off the data plate, we pulled up the exact parts diagram for his unit, and inside of ninety seconds we knew which sheave, which pin, and which grease. Compare that to the calls where somebody describes a lift with a sticker that fell off and a manufacturer that doesn’t return email. We keep cables, cylinders, sheaves, latch hardware, and lock release cables on the shelf for the brands we support, and we can usually get a part moving same-day. That pipeline is what turns a twenty-year asset into a thirty-year one. When people ask us why we’re picky about which automotive two post lifts we’ll sell and stand behind, the answer is that we’re the ones who have to answer the phone in year eleven, and we’d rather have a good answer.

Storage Plus Service: How to Lay Out the Shop

If you’re a collector planning a building rather than retrofitting one, plan for both machines from the start. Put the four-post where the door alignment is best for drive-on convenience and where you can stack two cars without blocking traffic. Put the two-post where you have the most walking room on both sides and the best light — you’ll be standing under it, not just parking on it. Twelve feet of bay width is workable; fourteen is comfortable. Fourteen-foot sidewalls let you run an overhead two-post and still raise a truck fully.

Think about the slab in zones. The four-post is more forgiving; the two-post is where you want your thickest, best-cured concrete and no seams within the anchor footprint. Run the 220V circuits during construction, not after — pulling wire through finished drywall costs more than the wire. And plan drainage away from the two-post columns, because water pooling at the base is how anchors and column bases start rusting in an Iowa winter. Our West Des Moines customer got most of this right by accident because his pole building was overbuilt. Not everybody gets that lucky, so we walk the site first when we can. A twenty-minute conversation before the concrete truck arrives has saved more projects than any part we’ve ever shipped, and it costs nothing but a phone call.

What We’d Tell Any Collector Starting Out

Buy for the work you actually do, not the work you imagine. If most of your Saturdays involve exhaust, driveline, brakes, and suspension, wheels-free access is worth more than any accessory. If most of your Saturdays involve parking cars you don’t drive in winter, storage geometry wins. Most collectors with more than three vehicles eventually need both, and adding the second lift later is fine as long as you left space for it.

Then buy the brand with the longest paper trail you can afford. Certification, published parts diagrams, and a distributor who stocks wear items are worth more than a lower sticker, and the difference shows up around year eight. Get the install done right — level columns, equalized cables, torqued anchors, load-tested — and then do the ten minutes of monthly maintenance that keeps everything boring. That’s the entire recipe. We’ve been doing this long enough across central Iowa to know that the lifts still working after twenty-five years aren’t the ones that were babied; they’re the ones that were spec’d correctly, installed correctly, and had parts available when they needed them.
