Start With Budget, Not With Brand
Almost every shopper we talk to starts in the wrong place. They pick a brand because a friend has one, then try to force the budget to match. Flip that. Decide what you can actually spend on the installed package — lift, freight, install labor, and any concrete work — and the field narrows itself immediately. In broad tiers: entry-level baseplate units in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range sit at the bottom, mid-tier clear-floor overhead models in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range sit in the middle, and premium American-built commercial columns with 12,000 lb or higher capacity sit at the top. Each tier is a genuinely different product, not just a different sticker.
What you get as you move up is duty cycle and parts availability, not lifting height. A budget column will raise a Camaro just as high as a premium one. The difference shows up at year six, when a carriage slider is worn and you need a replacement. An asymmetric unit rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and uses shorter front arms, setting the car back so doors open freely. The third option — Rotary calls theirs versymmetric — lets you load either way, which is the most flexible choice if your vehicle mix swings from Miatas to F-250s. Where it gets confusing is the import market, where model names like “9LC” get reused across multiple factories with different steel gauges and different cylinder suppliers. We had a shopper up north set on a 9LC-designated unit with a firm budget in the low four figures, no install needed. That’s a legitimate choice for a light-duty home shop. It is not the same product as a 10,000 lb commercial column, even if the capacity sticker says something similar.
