Most of the calls we get about automotive two post lifts for home shops start the same way: somebody is standing in a half-finished pole building with a phone in one hand and a tape measure in the other. Last winter it was a guy near the Iowa-Missouri border putting up a 30×40 building with twelve-foot sidewalls. He wanted to stop crawling around on a creeper to change differential fluid, and he wanted to do it before the concrete guys came back in the spring. That timing was the smartest thing about his project. Almost everything that goes wrong with a home lift install is something that was decided months earlier — slab thickness, ceiling height, where the door track runs, where the panel sits. This is the checklist we run through with people at that stage.

Step One: Pour the Slab for the Lift You Want

If your building is not built yet, you are in the best possible position and you should not waste it. A standard residential garage pour is often four inches, sometimes less at the edges, and frequently over questionable base prep. That is marginal for a two-post column even when it technically meets a manufacturer minimum. Our standard advice to anyone still in the planning stage is to spec a minimum of six inches of 3,000 PSI concrete across the whole bay area, on compacted base, with rebar or a heavy mesh. The cost difference on a 30×40 building is real but modest, and it buys you options for the next thirty years.

Pay attention to control joints too. Anchors need to land a specified distance away from any joint or slab edge, and it is remarkably easy to end up with a joint running exactly where a column base wants to sit. Tell your concrete contractor roughly where the columns will go and ask them to lay out joints around that footprint. Also skip in-floor heat directly under the intended column locations, or at minimum get an accurate as-built drawing of the tubing runs — we have had to abandon planned positions because nobody could tell us where the PEX was. A few of our customers have drilled through a heat loop. It is a bad afternoon. Getting the slab right is the cheapest insurance available on automotive two post lifts.

Ceiling Height and the Clearfloor vs Baseplate Decision

Twelve-foot sidewalls sound generous until you account for the truss chord, the door track, lights, and the overhead crossbar on a clearfloor lift. Most clearfloor two-post designs want somewhere in the neighborhood of twelve feet of clear ceiling to fully raise a tall vehicle with the overhead beam and shutoff bar in place. If you have less, or if a garage door opener rail runs down the middle of the bay, a baseplate design becomes the practical answer — the hoses and equalization cables run through a channel across the floor instead of overhead.

Baseplate columns get a bad reputation from people who have tripped over the floor channel or dragged a transmission jack across it. In a home shop that objection is mostly overblown. The channel is low, it is protected, and you learn where it is in about a day. The real tradeoff is that a baseplate unit puts more bending load into the columns because the top is not tied together, so anchoring and slab quality matter even more. We spec baseplate models for home builds constantly and they work fine. What we will not do is put a clearfloor overhead unit in a building where the crossbar has to be mounted low enough that you can only raise a car halfway. Measure from finished floor to the lowest obstruction in the bay, write that number down, and give it to us before you shop. It determines half the decision on automotive two post lifts in a home garage.

Capacity: Why 9,000 lb Is Usually the Wrong Answer

Weekend mechanics almost always underestimate what they will end up lifting. The reasoning goes: my heaviest vehicle is a 6,000 lb truck, so a 9,000 lb column has plenty of margin. Then two years later a friend’s diesel needs a clutch, or you buy a three-quarter-ton to pull a trailer, or a project car shows up with a full frame and an iron block. The gap between a 9,000 and a 10,000 lb column is small on the invoice and large in the real world.

Capacity is also not the only number. Rated capacity assumes a balanced load distributed across four arms. Trucks with heavy front ends, or a vehicle you have partially disassembled, load unevenly. Arm capacity ratings, adapter height, and pad reach all matter as much as the headline figure. For a home shop that will see anything from a lowered coupe to a full-size pickup, we generally point people at a 10,000 or 12,000 lb unit with three-stage front arms and a set of stackable adapters. Three-stage arms reach in short for low sports cars and extend out for long-wheelbase trucks, which is exactly the range a hobbyist deals with. Differential Service Is the Use Case That Sells People

The customer near the border told us the thing that finally pushed him over the line was differential fluid. He was doing gear oil changes on a truck and a Jeep on ramps, with a pump bottle and a drain pan wedged in beside his head, and getting a face full of stinking 75W-90 every time. On a two-post, the axle is at chest height, the pan sits on a rolling stand, the fill plug is right in front of you, and the whole job takes twenty minutes instead of an hour of contortion.

That is the general pattern with a two-post. It does not make hard jobs easy so much as it makes annoying jobs quick. Exhaust work, transmission pans, fuel filters on a diesel, brake lines, shocks, front-end work — all of it goes from a project you dread to something you knock out on a Saturday morning. Because the wheels hang free, a two-post also does things a four-post simply cannot without extra hardware: suspension work, brake jobs, wheel bearings, anything that requires the wheel off. That freedom is the entire argument for automotive two post lifts over drive-on designs for people who actually turn wrenches. The tradeoff is that you cannot park a car on it for storage the way you can on a four-post, and setting the arms correctly takes a minute of attention every single time. If you want both capabilities in one building, plan for both bays now rather than trying to retrofit later.

Power, Air, and Lighting: Sequence These Before Drywall

Nearly every home lift power unit runs on 220V single-phase, typically drawing on a 25 or 30 amp circuit depending on the motor. Get that circuit run to the correct column before the walls close up. Which column matters — the power unit mounts on one side, and if you put the receptacle on the wrong wall you are living with a cord across the bay forever. Ask us or check the manual for the specific model before the electrician shows up, and if you are still undecided, have them run to both sides. Wire is cheap during construction and expensive after.

While the electrician is there, think about lighting. Overhead fixtures directly above the bay get blocked by the vehicle once it is in the air, which is exactly when you need light. Fixtures mounted on the side walls at roughly ten feet throw light up under a raised car far better. Plan air lines the same way — a drop near each column beats dragging a hose from a corner compressor. And leave clearance around the columns. A common mistake in a 30×40 is planning the bay tight against a wall, then discovering you cannot swing an arm or open a door. We want roughly three feet of working space outside each column. New, Used, and What a Realistic Budget Looks Like

People ask us constantly whether they should hunt for a used column on marketplace listings. Sometimes yes. A ten-year-old mainstream-brand unit from a shop that closed, with the manual, all the arms, and no modifications, can be a genuinely good buy. What makes it a bad buy is everything we usually find instead: missing arm pins, a cable somebody spliced, no data plate, arms from a different model, and a seller who has no idea what the anchor situation was. Add the cost of new cables, an anchor kit, a cylinder reseal, and hauling, and the bargain shrinks fast.

For budgeting, think in tiers rather than a single number. Entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 lb columns from the value brands occupy the lowest tier. Mid-tier gets you better arm designs, heavier steel, and a real parts pipeline. The top tier is commercial-grade equipment built for daily cycling, which is more machine than most home shops need but which holds value well.
