A guy on acreage west of Waukee called us in February with a question we get more than you’d think: could he do front-end alignment work on one of the automotive two post lifts he’d been looking at online? He’d bought a well-used one at a farm auction, dragged it home behind a skid loader, and wanted to know what it would take to make it useful for the toe-and-camber work he was tired of paying town rates for. The honest answer took twenty minutes and covered two topics — what a two-post can and can’t do for alignment, and whether the leaking cylinder on his column was worth rebuilding. Here’s that conversation, expanded into a checklist.

The Alignment Question, Answered Straight
Let’s clear this up first because it drives everything else. A two-post lift is not an alignment rack. Alignment requires the suspension loaded at ride height on a flat, level, repeatable surface with slip plates up front and turn plates that let the wheels move. A two-post picks the vehicle up by the frame or pinch welds and lets the suspension hang. You cannot set toe on hanging suspension and expect it to read the same on the ground.
What you can absolutely do on a two-post is everything that surrounds an alignment. Tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings, sway bar links, rack boots, strut assemblies, wheel bearings, and steering gear — all of it is far easier at chest height than on your back. In a farm shop, that’s usually where the real value is anyway, because worn front-end components are what threw the alignment out in the first place. Plenty of the Waukee-area shops we serve use their two-post for the parts replacement and then send the truck to a rack for the final numbers. If you want alignment in-house, the correct answer is a four-post alignment rack or a scissor alignment lift with built-in slip plates and rear slide plates — different equipment, different budget, and something we can quote separately. Buying a two-post expecting it to do alignment is the mistake we’re trying to save you from.
Sizing Your Waukee Shop Before You Buy Anything
Waukee and the surrounding Dallas County acreages have a lot of newer pole buildings, and that’s mostly good news. Newer slabs tend to be poured properly, but the sidewall heights vary wildly — we’ve measured everything from a tight 10-foot clear to a 16-foot open truss. That number determines whether you’re looking at an overhead crossbeam design or a baseplate model. Overhead is cleaner underfoot and generally what a professional shop chooses; baseplate keeps you under a low ceiling at the cost of a floor channel.
Measure the true clear height to the lowest obstruction — a truss chord, a light fixture, a garage door track in the open position — not the sidewall. Then measure bay width. Automotive two post lifts want roughly 12 feet of width minimum for comfortable door swing, and 14 is nicer. Depth should be at least 24 feet so you can walk around the front and back of a crew cab. Check where the overhead door track sits when it’s up, because that’s the single most common surprise on installation day in a residential-style shop. Also plan your electrical: 220V single-phase on a dedicated 30-amp circuit is typical, and the power unit should sit on the column nearest your breaker panel. Finally, verify concrete thickness by drilling a test hole at each anchor location. Four to six inches of 3,000 PSI concrete cured at least 28 days is the standard requirement, and being within a foot of a control joint or slab edge is a problem worth solving before delivery, not after.
Capacity, Arm Style and the Trucks You Actually Fix
The Waukee caller had a half-ton, a three-quarter-ton with a plow mount, and a neighbor’s dually that showed up regularly. That’s a classic farm-shop mix and it pushed him past the 10,000 lb tier. Our rule of thumb: 9,000 to 10,000 lb handles cars, half-tons and most standard three-quarter-tons; 12,000 lb is where you should be if duallies, plow trucks or loaded service bodies come through; 15,000 lb and above is for light medium-duty. Buying one tier up costs meaningfully less than buying a second lift later.
Arm configuration matters just as much as the capacity plate. Low-profile front arms are worth specifying if you’ll ever put a lowered car or a sports car on it — standard arms simply won’t slide under the rocker on some vehicles. Three-stage front arms give you reach for short-wheelbase vehicles and telescope back for long ones. For truck work, factor in stackable truck adapters that add four to six inches of pad height so you can reach frame rails without the arm pads hitting the running boards. Symmetric column layouts handle long wheelbases better; asymmetric rotates the columns and sets the vehicle back so doors open clear, which is what you want if you’re climbing in and out of a cab checking steering. Hydraulic Cylinder Seals: Why They Leak and When to Care
Now the part the Waukee caller really wanted to hear about. Every two-post has one or two hydraulic cylinders doing the actual lifting, and the seals inside them are consumables. A rod seal keeps fluid from weeping out past the polished rod. A piston seal keeps fluid from bypassing internally. A wiper keeps grit off the rod. Over ten or fifteen years, seals harden, take a set, and start to pass fluid.
Symptoms come in two flavors. External leaks are obvious — fluid streaking down the column, a puddle under the base, a reservoir that needs topping every few months. Internal bypass is sneakier: the lift raises fine but slowly settles when loaded, or one column drifts down relative to the other overnight. Drift is the one that matters. If a loaded vehicle creeps down on its own, that cylinder needs attention now, and in the meantime you set the mechanical locks every single time — which you should be doing anyway. Contaminated or wrong hydraulic fluid is the leading cause of premature seal failure. Farm shops sometimes top off with whatever hydraulic oil is on the shelf for the tractor, and tractor fluid additives can attack lift seal compounds. Use what the manual specifies, usually an AW-32 or AW-46 anti-wear hydraulic oil or an approved ATF, and keep the reservoir clean. A little rust pitting on the cylinder rod will shred a fresh seal in weeks, so inspect the rod before you rebuild anything.
Rebuild Kits Versus Replacement Cylinders
When a cylinder starts weeping, you have three paths, and the right one depends on the rod. Path one is a seal kit. For most Rotary and Challenger cylinders, and for a good number of other brands, a kit with rod seal, piston seal, wiper and O-rings is inexpensive — typically under a couple hundred dollars — and a competent person can do the job in an afternoon with the lift fully lowered and depressurized. Path two is a complete replacement cylinder, which runs several hundred to over a thousand depending on bore, stroke and brand, but eliminates any question about rod condition.
Path three, and the one we recommend most often for older equipment, is a hybrid: pull the cylinder, inspect the rod and bore, and decide with the parts in your hands. If the rod is smooth and the bore is clean, seal it and put it back. If the rod is pitted, scored or slightly bent, a new seal will fail fast and you’re better off replacing outright. Bring the old cylinder or at minimum clear photos of the data plate, the rod end, and a tape measure across the bore. We size seal kits by bore diameter, rod diameter and stroke, and a photo saves everyone a week of guessing. While the cylinder is out, replace the equalization cables if they’re original — you already have the lift apart, cables are cheap relative to labor, and stretched cables are the other half of most sync complaints.
Buying Used: What to Inspect at the Auction
A lot of the farm shops around Waukee buy used, and we’re not against it — we just want you to buy the right used one. Before money changes hands, photograph the data plate. Brand, model and serial number tell us whether parts are still available, and that single question decides whether a cheap lift is a bargain or a boat anchor. Some 1990s and 2000s import brands have no parts pipeline whatsoever, and a $1,500 lift you can’t get a lock latch for is worth exactly scrap value.
Then inspect the physical condition. Look at the equalization cables where they wrap the sheaves — broken strands, kinks and rust mean immediate replacement. Check the carriage slide blocks for wear and the columns for gouging, which indicates the carriages have been running metal-on-metal. Cycle the locks by hand if you can; latch teeth that are rounded over are a safety item, not a cosmetic one. Look for base plate cracks and elongated anchor holes, which suggest the previous installation was loose or the concrete was inadequate. Check the arm restraint gears — worn ones let arms swing under load. Finally, ask whether it’s overhead or baseplate and whether all the hardware, arms and adapters are present, because sourcing a missing arm assembly can cost more than the lift did. Maintenance, Inspection and Getting Help Fast
Once it’s anchored and running, the maintenance load on a two-post is light but non-negotiable. Daily, before the first vehicle: glance at the cables, confirm both locks click on the same notch, look for fluid on the floor. Monthly: grease the carriage slide blocks and the arm pivot pins per the manual, check anchor bolt torque, and inspect arm restraints. Annually: hydraulic fluid level and condition, cable tension adjustment, and a full ANSI/ALI-style inspection by a qualified inspector. That last one is a requirement in commercial settings and just plain good practice on a private farm shop where nobody else is watching.
The single habit that prevents the most damage is simple: always lower onto the mechanical locks before working under a vehicle. Hydraulics hold a load; locks hold it safely. Never rely on the cylinder alone, no matter how new the seals are. Beyond that, keep the reservoir topped with the correct fluid, keep grit off the columns, and don’t ignore a small leak — the seal kit is cheap, the emergency service call in the middle of a busy week is not.
