A small fleet operator outside Dubuque called us last spring with a question we hear almost weekly: should he buy used or new when it comes to automotive two post lifts? He runs eleven service vans and two flatbeds, does his own brakes, suspension, and enough alignment prep work that he wanted a proper bay instead of jack stands on a gravel apron. He had a line on a fifteen-year-old asymmetric machine from a closing dealership two counties over, and he had a quote from us on a brand-new 10,000 lb clearfloor unit. The Two Configurations We Put Side by Side

Configuration A was the used machine: an older asymmetric two-post, 10,000 lb rated, overhead style, with a set of arms that had clearly been dragged across concrete for a decade. The seller wanted a number that looked like a bargain until you started adding to it. Configuration B was a new Rotary SPO12 clearfloor at 12,000 lb, ordered through us with a full install, anchors, and a factory warranty. On paper the used unit was roughly a third of the delivered cost of the new one. That gap is what makes used equipment tempting, and we never tell someone their instinct is wrong for looking.

What we did instead was build a line-item sheet. For the used lift we added a teardown inspection, two replacement cables because the originals showed birdcaging near the sheaves, new arm restraint gears, a full hydraulic fluid flush, four new equalizer sheave bearings, a set of adapter pads, and freight on a drop-deck trailer from the seller’s location. We also added the labor to pull the old anchors and re-drill, since the bolt pattern would not line up with his existing slab layout. By the time that sheet was finished, the used machine had climbed to about sixty percent of the new lift’s delivered price. It still had no warranty, no serial-verified capacity documentation, and no guarantee the columns had never been struck by a forklift.

Why Alignment Work Changes the Math

A shop doing brake jobs and oil changes can tolerate a lift that is a little tired. A shop doing alignment prep cannot. Even though a two-post is not an alignment rack, the fleet operator in Dubuque was pulling tie rod ends, replacing control arm bushings, and setting ride height before sending vehicles to a rack down the road. Every one of those tasks depends on the vehicle sitting square and stable, and on the arms holding position under load while a tech leans on a breaker bar. Pins elongate, restraint teeth round over, and the pads compress until the rubber is hard as a hockey puck. On a used machine those parts are all consumables you inherit at the end of their life. On a new machine they are covered and, more importantly, they are matched to the manufacturer’s engineering. We told him plainly: if his work was seasonal storage and light maintenance, the used unit made sense. Because he was doing suspension and steering work that fed directly into alignment jobs, we recommended he weight reliability heavily. He agreed, and that shifted the decision before we ever talked about warranty terms.

What a Used Lift Actually Needs Before It Lifts Anything

We inspect a fair number of secondhand lifts every year, and there is a standard punch list. Cables get replaced, full stop — we do not care how they look, because internal corrosion does not announce itself and cable is cheap compared to the alternative. Hydraulic hoses over ten years old get replaced. The cylinder gets checked for rod pitting and seal weep; if the chrome is scored, the cylinder either gets rebuilt or swapped. Sheave bearings get spun by hand and replaced if there is any roughness. Locks get cycled by hand a dozen times to confirm they drop clean into every position.

Then there is the paperwork problem. ALI certification does not transfer meaningfully to a machine with no records, and if a used lift has been modified — welded arm extensions, non-factory adapters, a swapped power unit with the wrong pressure relief setting — you have a machine that no longer matches any published capacity. We have walked into shops where someone welded a plate onto an arm and cheerfully told us the lift now handles bigger trucks. It does not. Concrete, Ceiling, and the Constraints Nobody Mentions

The Dubuque shop had a slab poured in the early nineties, and nobody knew the thickness or the mix. We cored it. Four and a quarter inches of unreinforced concrete over compacted fill — enough for a 10,000 lb lift only if we cut and poured new anchor pads. That is a real cost, usually a few hundred dollars per column plus a cure wait of a week or more before we can torque anchors to spec. It is also non-negotiable. We have seen anchors pull a cone of concrete straight out of a thin slab with a vehicle in the air, and it is not something you get to be casual about.

Ceiling height was the second constraint. His building had a fourteen-foot clear span, which is generous, but the overhead used lift needed its crossbar at a specific height and his door track ran right through that plane. That single detail — door track versus crossbar — is what pushed him toward the new machine as much as anything on the cost sheet. The Decision Framework We Gave Him

We use a simple four-question filter with anyone weighing used against new. One: how many vehicles per week go in the air? Under five, used is defensible. Over fifteen, buy new and stop thinking about it. Two: is the lift a revenue center or a convenience? If a down lift means turning away paying work, downtime cost swamps the purchase savings within a year. Three: can you source parts for the used model? Orphaned brands from defunct manufacturers are the worst trap in this market — the machine works fine until one proprietary sheave fails and there is nothing to buy.

Four: what is your risk tolerance for the unknown? Used automotive two post lifts carry a permanent question mark about their history. Columns that were struck, welds that were repaired, a power unit that was run low on fluid for two years — none of that is visible from a photo in a listing. Six months later the only thing he has called us about was ordering a second set of adapter pads. That is the outcome we want.

When Used Actually Wins

We are not anti-used, and it would be dishonest to write this article as if new is always right. A hobbyist restoring a Chevelle in a heated pole barn, lifting one vehicle a month, does not need a warranty on a machine that will see two hundred cycles in its remaining life. We have installed plenty of good secondhand equipment for those customers and slept fine. The key is buying from a known brand with parts availability — a Rotary or Challenger from a shop that closed, with visible serial plates, service records if you are lucky, and no visible column damage.

What makes used work is refurbishment discipline. Budget thirty to forty percent of the purchase price for parts and labor before the lift ever holds a vehicle, and treat that money as part of the price rather than a surprise. If the total still comes in well under new, and the model has a healthy parts supply chain, you have made a good buy. If the seller will not let you inspect it under power, walk away.
