What the photos did not show was a data tag, a serial number, or any indication of who built it. That is the first red flag we teach people to look for. If a seller cannot tell you the manufacturer and model, you are not buying a machine — you are buying a pile of steel that may or may not have parts support in five years.
We asked him to get three things before driving out: a clear photo of the serial tag, a photo of the cables where they wrap the sheaves at all four corners, and a video of the unit going up and down empty with the audio on. He got two of the three. The cable photo showed broken strands — what the industry calls birdcaging — on one corner. That alone is a full cable set plus labor, and on an unidentified brand, sourcing four matched cables of the exact length becomes a custom fabrication job. Add a probable seal kit, unknown safety lock condition, disassembly, transport, and reassembly, and the bargain evaporated. He walked. That is not an argument against every used lift, but it is why we ask the same questions every time somebody calls about one.
Our Actual Used vs New Framework
We are not lift snobs. We service plenty of secondhand equipment and we have helped collectors buy used units that turned out great. The framework we use has four gates, and a candidate has to pass all four. Gate one is identification: known manufacturer, legible serial, and parts still available. Gate two is structural integrity: no cracked welds at the column base or the crossmember ends, no significant corrosion at the base plates, no bent runways. Gate three is wear items: cables, sheaves, safety locks, and the cylinder. Every one of those is replaceable, but you have to price them into the deal before you buy, not after.
Gate four is provenance and paperwork. Was it professionally installed? Is there any service history? Was it ever certified? For a collector storing valuable vehicles, that last gate matters more than the money saved. It came in November. He called and said the lift was going up fine but hesitating and clunking on the way down, and one corner seemed to drop last.
