A car lift automotive purchase looks simple on a spec sheet and complicated the moment you stand in your own garage with a tape measure. We hear it constantly from collectors around Council Bluffs and the Missouri River corridor: three or four vehicles stored under covers, one of them always needing exhaust work or a driveline inspection, and a concrete floor that has never seen anything heavier than a floor jack. This article walks through a full first year of ownership for one of those collectors — from the phone call about bay layout, through the anchor holes, to the first real service job with the car up in the air and the exhaust hangers finally within reach.

The Phone Call: Storage First, Service Second

The collector who called us had a detached three-car garage in Council Bluffs, a 10-foot ceiling at the low point of the trusses, and four vehicles: two 1960s muscle cars, a modern pickup, and a project that had not run in six years. His first question was about stacking — could he park one over another and reclaim a bay? His second question, which turned out to be the more important one, was whether he could actually work under a stored car. Those are two different design problems, and they pull the layout in opposite directions.

Storage wants the runways low and the drive-on approach short. Service wants maximum rise and open access to the underside. A 4-post handles both if you accept a tradeoff: you get a solid drive-on platform and honest storage duty, but the runways sit under the rocker panels, so exhaust and driveline work happens between them rather than in wide-open space. We walked him through that limitation on the phone before we quoted anything, because a collector who expects a two-post’s open-center access from a 4-post will be disappointed on day one. He decided the storage function mattered more, and we built the layout around it.

Measuring the Bay Before Anything Ships

We do not ship a lift into a garage we have not measured, and neither should any dealer you buy from. In this garage the constraint list ran long: 10-foot ceiling at the truss, a garage door opener rail hanging dead center in the bay he wanted, a service panel on the north wall, and a floor drain that sloped toward the middle. Every one of those items moves the lift.

The opener came out first and got replaced with a wall-mount jackshaft unit, which bought back about eight inches of usable headroom in the center of the bay. We shifted the lift 14 inches off the wall so the driver’s door could open fully at the top of travel — that is a detail people forget, and it turns a pleasant garage into an annoying one. The floor drain slope meant we shimmed the columns; a 4-post is more forgiving of slope than a two-post because the runways self-level to the carriage, but the base plates still need full contact. We also mapped the ceiling for the highest point of the tallest vehicle when raised: pickup roof height plus runway rise plus a two-inch safety margin. That number, not the manufacturer’s spec sheet, decides whether a car lift automotive install actually clears.

Concrete: What We Found Under the Slab

The garage was poured in the early 1990s and the owner had no paperwork on it. We cored a test hole in an inconspicuous corner and measured 4.25 inches of concrete over compacted fill. That is thin for a 4-post rated near 9,000 pounds, and it is exactly the kind of thing that never shows up until an anchor pulls under load two years later.

The fix was not dramatic. Because a 4-post distributes load across four base plates rather than concentrating overturning moment into two columns, the anchoring demand is far lower than a two-post’s. We used the manufacturer’s specified wedge anchors at reduced embedment on three columns and cut a small pad replacement under the fourth, where the core sample showed a void from settled fill. Total added cost landed in the low four figures — less than most people fear and far less than a full slab tear-out. We tell every homeowner the same thing: get the concrete answer first. A car lift automotive package is only as good as the four square feet of floor under each post, and no amount of steel quality compensates for a slab that flexes. Iowa freeze-thaw cycles are hard on garage floors, and a 30-year-old pour in Council Bluffs deserves a look before you trust it with a car overhead.

Layout for Exhaust and Driveline Access

Here is where the first-year reality showed up. Three months in, he pulled the project car onto the runways to replace a rusted exhaust from the headers back — a full system, hangers, tailpipes, the works. That job taught him more about bay layout than any brochure.

Working exhaust on a 4-post means you are reaching around and between the runways, not under an open floor. The single change that made the biggest difference was mounting the rolling bridge jack correctly and learning to reposition it mid-job instead of fighting around it. Second was lighting: he added two 4-foot LED strips mounted to the ceiling joists on either side of the lift, aimed inward, plus a magnetic work light that sticks to the runway underside. Third was clearance on both long sides — we had left 34 inches on one side and 52 on the other, and he told us later he wished we had split it evenly. Driveline work is even more sensitive; dropping a driveshaft or pulling a transmission crossmember requires room to swing a three-foot bar, and that room has to exist on the side where the transmission tunnel actually is. The First Real Service Job

The exhaust replacement took him a weekend and a half, and the debrief was useful. He raised the car to roughly 58 inches of runway height — not full rise — because sitting on a rolling stool at that height beat standing hunched at 72 inches. That is a workflow discovery nobody tells you about: full rise is for walking under, mid-rise is for sitting under, and most exhaust and driveline work is sitting work.

He also found the limits of his air setup. A 20-gallon pancake compressor could not keep up with an impact wrench on eight rusted exhaust clamp bolts, so he upgraded to a 60-gallon vertical unit and ran hard line along the wall to a reel above the lift. The reel above the lift matters more than the compressor size, honestly — dragging a hose across runways is how you knock the rolling jack out of position. By the end of the job he had also added a small parts cart that rolls under one runway, a magnetic tray on the column, and a whiteboard for torque specs. None of that came in the crate. All of it came from one weekend of actually using the equipment, which is why we tell first-time buyers that year one is a layout experiment, not a finished shop.

Maintenance and the 12-Month Check

We came back at the one-year mark for a service call, and it was mostly good news. Cables were within tolerance, the hydraulic cylinder showed no weeping at the rod seal, and the lock ladders engaged cleanly on all four columns. What needed attention: two cable sheaves were dry and starting to squeal, the equalizer cables had stretched enough to put the runways about 3/8 inch out of level, and the power unit reservoir was a half quart low.

Cable stretch in year one is normal and expected. New aircraft cable seats itself into the sheaves and the fittings settle, and a single adjustment usually holds for years afterward. Ignoring it is the problem — uneven runways load one cable harder than the other three, and that is how a five-year cable becomes a two-year cable. We re-tensioned, greased the sheaves and the lock latch pivots, topped the reservoir with the correct AW-32 hydraulic oil, and cycled the lift a dozen times to purge air. Total visit, under two hours. What We’d Do Differently on the Next Install

If we ran that job again, three things change. First, even side clearance — 43 and 43 instead of 34 and 52. The wide side gets used for tool carts and the narrow side gets cursed at. Second, we would have run the lift power on its own 20-amp circuit from the start instead of sharing with the shop outlets; a compressor kicking on while the lift is rising causes a voltage sag that makes the motor grumble. Third, we would have pre-planned the drip trays and the caster kit.

The caster kit is the one homeowners underestimate. A 4-post on casters can be rolled out of the bay entirely for a big project, or rotated 90 degrees for a summer of driveway work, and that flexibility is worth more in a three-car garage than any single feature on the spec sheet. It only works if the floor is flat and the doorway is wide enough, both of which we would verify during the initial measure rather than after. Beyond that, the install held up well and the owner has used it far more than he expected — which is the pattern with almost every collector we work with.
