A weekend hobbyist in Council Bluffs emailed us photos of his garage last winter with one sentence: “Will a car lift automotive setup fit in here?” Two photos, no measurements. We’ve gotten some version of that message a few hundred times, and the honest answer is always the same — maybe, and here’s the list of things we need to know before either of us spends money. He was replacing shocks and control arms on a ’90s pickup and a daily driver, tired of doing it on jack stands on a cold floor. He ended up with a mid-rise scissor unit and he’s thrilled. But the path there was a checklist, not a shopping cart. This is that checklist.

Step One: Measure Ceiling Height Three Different Ways

Nearly every home garage disappointment starts with a bad ceiling measurement. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest permanent obstruction, not to the peak. In a typical Council Bluffs attached garage that means measuring to the bottom of the garage door track, the bottom of the opener rail, the bottom of any truss chord, and the bottom of light fixtures or the door spring bar. The lowest of those is your real working height. Write down all four numbers.

Then do the math for the vehicle. Your shock and suspension work needs the wheels hanging free, so a two-post or mid-rise needs to raise the frame roughly 48 to 60 inches to put you at comfortable working height. Add the vehicle’s overall height. A 74-inch tall pickup lifted 50 inches needs 124 inches — over 10 feet — plus clearance above. That’s why most garages with 9 or 10 foot ceilings end up with either a four-post at partial height, or a mid-rise scissor that lifts 40 to 48 inches and works beautifully for suspension jobs. When we spec a car lift automotive package for a residential garage, ceiling height is the first constraint we solve for and everything else follows from it.

Step Two: Find Out What Your Slab Really Is

Home garage slabs in western Iowa are typically poured 4 inches thick at 3,000 to 3,500 PSI, which is exactly the minimum most residential two-post and mid-rise lifts specify. “Exactly the minimum” and “probably fine” are not the same sentence. Slabs get thin at the edges, they get poured over soft fill, and in older houses they were sometimes poured 3 inches with no reinforcement at all. Anchoring a lift into 3 inches of unreinforced concrete is how you get a column that walks under load.

How to check without guessing: if there’s an expansion joint or a cracked edge you can see, measure the thickness there. If not, drill a small test hole with a hammer drill and a masonry bit and note the depth when it breaks through — you’ll feel the change. Do it in the two spots the columns will land, not in the middle of the bay. Also check the slab is level; more than about a quarter inch of variance across the column footprint means shimming, and shims stack up fast on a sloped garage floor poured toward the door for drainage. If the slab fails spec, your options are a new footing pour (cut, dig, rebar, pour, cure 28 days) or a lift type that doesn’t require anchoring at all. A four-post is freestanding and doesn’t need anchors on most residential models, which makes it the practical answer for a lot of marginal slabs. That flexibility is one of the underrated advantages in car lift automotive planning for older homes.

Step Three: Power, Panel Capacity, and the Extension Cord Question

Most home garage lifts ship with a 208–230V single-phase power unit, though a fair number of BendPak and Atlas residential models are available in 115V. The 115V versions are convenient and slower. Either way, the lift needs its own dedicated circuit — not shared with the compressor, not shared with the freezer, and never on an extension cord. Undersized wire means voltage drop, voltage drop means the motor pulls extra current, and extra current cooks windings.

Before you order, open your panel and count. Do you have two adjacent open slots for a 240V double-pole breaker? Is the panel a 100-amp service with an electric range and a dryer already on it, or a 200-amp with headroom? A licensed electrician in the Council Bluffs area will typically quote a few hundred dollars for a dedicated 30-amp 240V run in an attached garage with a nearby panel, and considerably more if the panel is on the far side of the house or needs upgrading. Get that quote before you buy the lift, not after. One more thing people miss: the power unit needs to sit where you can reach it and where a fluid leak won’t run under something you care about, and the manual disconnect should be within sight of the unit. Plan the location, not just the circuit. It’s a fifteen-minute conversation that prevents a second electrician visit.

Step Four: Door Swing, Vehicle Path, and Working Room

Paper-plan the bay before you drill anything. On a two-post you need roughly 12 to 13 feet of width between columns and enough space on both sides to open a car door fully at full height — because you will be climbing in and out to check ride height and torque suspension bolts. On a mid-rise scissor you need less width but you need clearance to walk both long sides. On a four-post you need runway length plus room to walk the ends.

Then check the vertical door path. If you have a sectional overhead door, the panels swing up and travel back along the track, and the top panel’s arc will hit a lift column or a raised vehicle if you didn’t account for it. High-lift track conversions and jackshaft openers solve this and are worth pricing out — a jackshaft opener mounted beside the door instead of on a center rail gives back six or more inches of usable ceiling in the middle of the bay, which is often exactly the difference between fits and doesn’t. Also think about how you’ll get the vehicle onto the lift. Approach angle matters on a mid-rise or a four-post ramp if you’re working on anything lowered. And think about what happens the other 340 days a year: if the lift lives where you park, a four-post that stores a second vehicle underneath earns its footprint. A two-post gives you unobstructed access to the whole underside, which is better for suspension and shock work specifically. Most hobbyists we talk to want both and have to pick one.

Step Five: Match the Car Lift Automotive Type to the Actual Work

Suspension and shock replacement has a specific requirement: the wheels need to hang free and you need clear access to the strut towers, control arms, and lower mounts. That points at a two-post or a mid-rise scissor with drive-over frame contact, not a drive-on four-post where the tires sit on runways and the suspension stays loaded. You can do shocks on a four-post with a rolling bridge jack, and plenty of people do — but you’re adding a jack to the budget and working around it.

For a Council Bluffs garage with a 9 or 10 foot ceiling and a 4-inch slab, the mid-rise scissor is often the honest recommendation. It lifts 40 to 48 inches, which is enough to sit on a stool and work on a strut comfortably, it needs modest ceiling clearance, most models anchor with four to six anchors or sit on a portable frame, and it tucks flat against the wall when you’re done. The tradeoff is you lose access to the middle of the vehicle where the lift structure sits, so exhaust and transmission work gets awkward. If your ceiling is 11 feet or better and the slab checks out, a residential two-post is the more capable machine and worth the extra prep. What matters is picking based on the jobs you actually do, not the jobs you imagine doing. We’d rather sell you the right car lift automotive setup once than the wrong one twice.

Step Six: The Site Survey and What We Actually Look At

When we come out — or when you send us photos and measurements for a remote review — here’s the list we run. Floor-to-lowest-obstruction height at four points. Slab thickness and any visible cracking or heaving. Bay width and depth. Overhead door type, track style, and opener location. Panel location, service size, and open slots. Floor slope and drain location. Access route from the driveway to the bay for getting the crate in. And what vehicles are going on it, by year and model, so we can check weight distribution and adapter needs.

Photos that help: one from the back corner of the garage showing the whole bay, one straight up at the ceiling structure, one of the open panel, one of the door track and opener, and one of the driveway approach. Include a tape measure in the frame where you can. That’s usually enough for us to give you a straight answer on the phone in ten minutes, including what won’t work and why.
