Picking a car lift gets a lot easier when you stop shopping and start working through a decision tree. A crew chief for a dirt-track team out of Waterloo called us in the middle of a season with a specific problem: he was pulling oil pans on a small-block between Friday and Saturday nights, doing it on jack stands on a cold concrete floor, and losing hours he did not have. He wanted equipment. What he did not have was clarity on budget tier, capacity, configuration, or whether his converted machine shed would even accept the thing. So we walked it in order — money first, then work, then building — and by the end of a twenty-minute phone call the answer was obvious.

Step One: Set the Budget Tier Before Anything Else

Everybody wants to start with specs. Start with money instead, because budget eliminates whole branches of the tree instantly and saves you from falling in love with equipment you are not going to buy. We think in three broad tiers. The entry tier is a mid-rise scissor or a light-duty portable — under a couple thousand dollars in equipment, DIY-installable, limited rise, and honestly fine for a lot of hobby work. The middle tier is a proper 9,000 to 10,000 lb frame-engaging or drive-on unit from a name brand, professionally installed, landing in the four-figure to low five-figure range all-in depending on freight and electrical.

The top tier is commercial-grade — heavier capacity, ALI certification, inground or specialty configurations, and installation work that may include concrete. For a racing operation, that top tier is usually overkill unless you are also running a customer business out of the same building. The crew chief’s number was mid-tier, and he was open to financing, which changes the conversation. We offer terms on most installs, and a lot of shops find that spreading equipment across twelve months is what turns a someday purchase into a this-month purchase. Worth saying plainly: do not stretch to the top tier and skip the concrete work or the electrical to afford it. A well-installed mid-tier unit outlives a badly installed premium one every single time. Budget includes the install, not just the box on the truck.

Step Two: Define the Work, Not the Vehicle

Next branch: what are you actually doing under there? This is where most people give a vague answer and end up with the wrong configuration. Oil pan gasket work is a specific job with specific demands. You need the engine bay accessible, you need room to drop a pan past a crossmember or steering rack, sometimes you need to support the engine from above while the pan comes out, and you need to be standing upright with both hands free for a long stretch of time.

That last part matters more than anyone admits. A pan gasket on a race motor is not a ten-minute job — it is scraping, cleaning, sealing, and torquing in sequence, and doing it with your head tipped back under a car sitting three feet off the floor will make you hate your own shop. So the work definition pushed hard toward full rise, wheels-free, frame-engaging. A drive-on four-post was technically capable but wrong for this job: the runways sit right where you want to be working, and the tires stay loaded so anything suspension-adjacent becomes awkward. A mid-rise scissor gets you maybe four feet, which is a kneeling job, not a standing one. Once he described the actual sequence of pulling a pan, the tree narrowed to a two-post before we said a word about his building. Capacity was never a factor — a race car and trailer-queen street car weigh nothing next to what these lifts are rated for.

Step Three: Measure the Ceiling — All Three Numbers

Now the building gets a vote, and this is where the tree usually prunes itself hard. There are three ceiling numbers, not one. First is the finished ceiling or the underside of the deck. Second is the lowest structural member — a truss bottom chord, a purlin, a glulam beam. Third is the lowest thing hanging: light fixtures, a gas heater, a sprinkler line, conduit, a garage door opener rail. That third number is the one that actually governs, and it is almost always lower than people quote you.

The Waterloo shop measured 13 feet 2 inches to the deck, which sounds generous. Truss bottoms sat at 12 feet 6 inches. But a radiant tube heater ran the length of one wall at 10 feet 9 inches, and the door opener rail hung at 10 feet 1 inch down the center of the bay. That opener rail was the real ceiling until we relocated it, which is a half-hour job with a jackshaft conversion or a simple side-mount reposition. Once it was out of the way, 12 feet 6 inches of clear structure is plenty for a standard overhead two-post with full rise, and a race car with a roof height around four feet leaves enormous working headroom. That is the ideal case. Most of the buildings we survey are not that generous, and a car lift purchase gets shaped by the tightest number in the room. Step Four: Check Door Swing Against Column Position

Door swing is the step everybody skips and the one that generates the most regret. A sectional overhead door does not disappear when it opens — it folds up and tracks back horizontally into the ceiling space of the bay. A roll-up gathers on a barrel above the header. Either way, there is a volume of space over the front of your bay that is occupied only when the door is open, which is exactly when you are not looking at it.

Here is the check we run. Close the door. Mark your intended column positions in chalk. Open the door fully and slowly, and drop a plumb bob from the furthest rearward point the door or barrel reaches. Mark that. The distance between your header and that mark is a no-build zone for any overhead crossbeam, and it also constrains column placement if the track hardware hangs low. At the Waterloo shop the door tracked back 9 feet 4 inches from the opening — a long way, and enough that the overhead crossbeam had to sit behind it. That set the column position, which in turn set how far a car had to drive in before the arms would reach the pinch welds. Fine in a deep bay. In a 24-foot-deep bay, that same 9 feet can force a baseplate configuration instead. This is the exact reason we take a tape to a building before quoting a car lift rather than trusting a phone description.

Step Five: Verify the Slab, Then Commit

The last gate before ordering is concrete. A two-post transfers its entire load into a handful of anchors, and the anchor spec on most 10,000 lb units calls for four to five inches of cured concrete at 3,000 PSI minimum, with adequate distance to any slab edge, joint, or trench. Pole buildings and converted machine sheds around northeast Iowa are a mixed bag — we have cored four inches of good mix in a 1980s shed and three inches of gravel-heavy pour in a building finished last decade.

Coring is cheap and it is the only honest answer. If the slab comes up short, the fix is cutting out a pad and pouring footings, which is a day of work and a real line item but far better than discovering the problem when an anchor pulls under load. The Waterloo building came back at just over five inches, clean mix, no joints near the column locations. We ordered, installed, commissioned, and had him pulling a pan the following weekend standing straight up. He told us later the first thing he noticed was not the time savings but that he stopped dreading the job. That is the actual return on a car lift for a small operation — the work you were avoiding becomes the work you just do. Where the Tree Ends and We Pick Up

Run those five steps in order — budget tier, actual work, three ceiling numbers, door swing, slab verification — and you will arrive at a short list of one or two models instead of a catalog full of options. That is the whole point of a decision tree: it is not about finding the best equipment in the abstract, it is about eliminating everything that cannot work in your building for your job at your number.
