A car lift changes what a hobby garage can actually do, and nowhere is that clearer than in a northwest Iowa collector’s shop where four or five vehicles rotate through the winter. We got the first call in late fall: a 30×40 pole building, twelve-foot sidewalls, a slab poured a few years back, and a small stable of driver-quality classics that all needed something. The immediate job on his list was an oil pan gasket on a small-block that had been marking its territory on clean concrete for two seasons. He’d been doing it on ramps and a creeper, and he was done with that. What follows is roughly a year of that ownership, start to finish, because the questions he asked are the same ones we field every week from Sioux County to Story County.

Why the Oil Pan Job Drove the Whole Decision
Every buyer has one job in their head that pushes them over the edge. For this owner it was an oil pan gasket. If you’ve ever done one on jack stands, you know the problem isn’t the bolts — it’s the geometry. You need the pan to drop straight down, you need clearance to swing a crossmember out of the way on some chassis, and you need to be under the engine bay with both arms free and your head at a workable angle. Twelve inches of stand height gives you none of that. You end up with the pan wedged against the crossmember, oil down your sleeve, and a gasket that gets pinched on reinstall because you couldn’t see the mating surface.
On a two-post, that same job takes the vehicle to chest height. The pan drops, you can actually clean the block rail with a scraper and a rag instead of by feel, and you torque the fasteners in sequence while looking at them. He told us the first pan he did after install took about a third of the time of the last one he’d done on stands — and it didn’t leak. That’s the honest argument for a lift in a collector garage. It isn’t luxury. It’s the difference between doing a job right and doing it well enough to regret later. Once he had it, the list of deferred repairs got shorter fast.
Overhead vs Baseplate: The Real Trade-Off
This was the longest conversation we had with him, and it deserves the time. An overhead two-post runs the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a crossbar at the top of the columns. A baseplate model runs them through a channel across the floor between the posts. Both are safe, both are common, and both are sold by every major manufacturer. The choice is almost entirely about your building.
His pole barn had twelve-foot sidewalls with a truss above, which is comfortable for an overhead configuration on most passenger-car-height columns. Overhead is what we recommend when the ceiling allows it, because the floor stays completely clear — you roll a transmission jack, a floor jack, or a parts cart straight through without stepping over anything. Baseplate makes sense when you have a low ceiling, an open truss you don’t want to fight, or a door track in the way. The trade is that low crossover channel: it’s only an inch or two tall, but you feel it every time a caster hits it, and if you’re rolling heavy equipment daily it becomes a nuisance. There’s also the overhead shut-off bar, which stops the carriage before the roof of a tall vehicle contacts the crossbar. On a collector garage where a van or a lifted pickup might occasionally come in, that matters. We walked his building with a tape measure and a laser before anyone signed anything, and that’s the step most online buyers skip.
The Slab: What We Check Before Anchoring
Concrete is where home installs go wrong, and it’s the part nobody wants to hear about. A two-post needs a minimum thickness and a minimum compressive strength under each column, and the manufacturer publishes both in the manual. Typical passenger-capacity units want four inches of properly cured concrete at a minimum, and many specify more. Age matters too — green concrete under 28 days won’t hold an anchor at spec no matter how thick it is.
His slab was five years old and the contractor had run it four inches with fiber mesh, which is fine on paper. We still core-tested and probed for the control joints, because a post anchored within a few inches of a joint or a slab edge is a post that can crack out its own footing over a couple of years. In his case one column landed close enough to a joint that we shifted the whole layout about fourteen inches toward the center bay. That cost nothing on install day and saved a repair later. When a slab genuinely won’t work, the fix is cutting out a section and pouring footing pads to spec — usually a day of work plus cure time, and worth every hour. We’ve been called to Indiana and Florida over the years to fix owner-installed lifts that never sat level because the anchors pulled or the slab dished under load, and unwinding that is far more expensive than getting it right the first morning.
Install Day in a 30×40 Pole Building
Install went in a single day. The columns came off the trailer, we set the baseplates to the chalk lines, and drilled anchors with a rotary hammer while a second tech ran the power drop. His building had a 220 circuit already on the wall for a compressor, which sped things up considerably — most collector shops we visit need an electrician for a day either before or after us, and scheduling that ahead saves a return trip.
The parts people underestimate are shimming and cable tension. Columns almost never sit dead plumb on a real-world slab, so you shim under the base until both posts read true in two directions, then re-torque the anchors. After that comes the equalization cable adjustment — the cables aren’t lifting anything, they keep the two carriages traveling together, and they need to be tensioned evenly and rechecked after the first several cycles because they stretch during break-in. We ran his unit up and down a dozen times empty, then loaded it with his heaviest vehicle and cycled it again. Arm restraints got checked, the safety locks got listened to in both directions, and we walked him through the manual override on the lock bar. Total time on site was about seven hours including the walkthrough. He was doing brake work that same weekend.
Capacity, Storage, and the 7,000 lb Question
He asked the question we hear constantly: is 7,000 pounds enough? For passenger vehicles in a collector garage, yes — comfortably. A full-size sedan runs under 4,500 pounds, most half-ton pickups land between 5,000 and 6,000, and the classics in his rotation were all under three tons. Capacity is only half the answer though. The other half is arm reach and carriage travel, because a long-wheelbase car needs arms that can extend to the correct pinch weld points without the front tires hanging off into space.
Storage was his second use case — one vehicle parked up, one underneath. That’s where we pushed back a little. A two-post will hold a car indefinitely on its locks, and plenty of people do it, but you lose the ability to work under it and you’re using both bays for one purpose. If long-term stacking is the real goal, a four-post with drive-on runways is the better tool: easier to load, no pinch-weld hunting, and rolling jacks bring the wheels free when you need suspension access. What the First Year of Maintenance Actually Looked Like
Twelve months in, the maintenance log on his car lift is short and boring, which is exactly what you want. Month one: recheck anchor torque and cable tension after break-in. That’s the single most-skipped step in home ownership and the one that causes the most drift between the two carriages. Month three: he found a weep at a hose fitting, snugged it, and it never came back. Hydraulic fittings settle; a small seep in the first season is normal and a two-minute fix.
Beyond that, it’s grease on the arm pivots and the carriage slide blocks, a monthly look at the cables for broken strands or corrosion, and a quick function test of the lock engagement every time before he goes underneath. He tops the reservoir once a year and changes the fluid on the schedule in the manual. The thing that goes wrong most on neglected units is the hydraulic cylinder — we’ve taken urgent calls from owners with a vehicle stranded in the air and a cylinder pouring fluid, and in almost every case there was a slow leak ignored for months first. What We’d Tell the Next Northwest Iowa Buyer
Measure before you shop. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, slab thickness and age, distance to the nearest control joint, and where your electrical is. Those four numbers determine which lift you can buy, and they eliminate most of the internet’s bad advice in one pass. If your ceiling is under about eleven feet clear, look hard at baseplate. If you’ve got a pole building with truss clearance, overhead is worth it for the clean floor alone.
Buy capacity you’ll actually use rather than the biggest number available — a heavier-rated unit costs more, weighs more, and does nothing extra for a garage full of passenger cars. Buy from someone who will answer the phone in three years when you need a cable, a lock pawl, or a cylinder, because those are wear parts and every lift eventually needs one.
