A collector near Marion called us in late winter with a problem that sounds simple until you start measuring: he wanted a car lift in a shop he already owned, he wanted to stack two vehicles on it, and he wanted enough working room underneath to pull wheels and check brake lines before the annual inspection season hit. His building had a finished concrete floor, a tall sidewall, and an overhead door that swung up into exactly the space where the top of a raised vehicle wanted to be. That last detail is the one nobody thinks about until the tracks are bolted down. Here is how his first year went, from the tape measure to the first service call.

Why He Wanted a Lift in the First Place

He owns five vehicles and drives two of them. The other three sit for months at a time, which means flat-spotted tires, weeping brake cylinders, and mice looking for insulation. Every spring he pulls each one out, gets it road-legal, and takes it in for the annual state inspection that his out-of-state registrations require. That process used to happen on jack stands in a cold building, one corner at a time, and it took entire weekends.

The math that finally sold him wasn’t about labor, though. It was about square footage. His building had exactly enough floor for four cars parked side by side, and he had five. Stacking two of them on a single footprint gave him back a full bay, and that bay is where he now does the inspection prep. Underneath a raised vehicle he can reach the exhaust hangers, the fuel lines, the parking brake cables, and the frame rails where rust hides. Everything that fails an inspection lives under the car, and getting eyes on all of it at once instead of one jack stand at a time changed how thorough the work actually was. He told us the first spring he found two problems he had been driving past for years.

Measuring Ceiling Height Before You Order a Car Lift

Here is the arithmetic we walk every homeowner through. Take your true ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Subtract the height of the tallest vehicle you plan to park on the runways. Then subtract the runway height of the equipment itself, usually somewhere between eight and eleven inches depending on the model and whether you are adding drip trays. What’s left is your headroom for the vehicle stored underneath, and it needs to be more than the height of that lower vehicle plus a few inches of comfort.

His building had twelve-foot sidewalls, which sounds generous. But the lowest point in his shop wasn’t the sidewall, it was a run of conduit and a set of fluorescent fixtures at about eleven feet two inches. That’s the number that mattered. A sedan on top at roughly fifty-five inches plus ten inches of runway left him about sixty-nine inches of clear space below, enough for a low sports car but not enough for the pickup he originally wanted down there. We rearranged the plan: pickup on the floor in a regular bay, two low cars sharing the lift. If he had ordered based on the sidewall number he would have been disappointed on install day, and that conversation is a lot cheaper to have on the phone than after the crate arrives.

The Overhead Door Swing Problem

Sectional overhead doors don’t go straight up. They curve back along horizontal tracks that run several feet into the building, usually at a height just above the door opening. Anything you raise into that path will meet the door. We have seen more than one customer discover this by putting a fresh dent in a door panel or by bending a track.

In this case the tracks ran about nine feet ten inches above the slab, roughly eight feet back from the opening. That effectively divided his shop into two zones: a front zone where nothing could be raised above the track line, and a rear zone with the full eleven-foot-plus clearance. The lift went in the rear zone, oriented so the raised vehicle sat entirely behind the door tracks. We also confirmed the door opener rail and the light fixtures cleared the runway path when the lift went to full height with a vehicle on it. Standard-lift doors are the usual troublemaker. High-lift conversions and jackshaft openers give you back a lot of ceiling, and if you are planning a build from scratch, spec that door before you pour the floor. Concrete, Anchors, and Why a Four-Post Is Forgiving

Two-post equipment puts every bit of load into a handful of anchor bolts in two small footprints. That means your slab thickness and concrete strength are not negotiable. Four-post equipment spreads the load across four base plates and, in most storage applications, doesn’t require anchoring at all for the manufacturer’s warranty, though we usually anchor anyway for peace of mind and to keep the frame from walking over years of drive-on, drive-off use.

His slab was a typical pole-building pour, four inches with no documented rebar and no thickened footings under the interior. That’s a real limitation. For a two-post we would have wanted to cut and pour anchor pads, which adds days and dust to the project. For the four-post storage unit we went ahead as-is. We did a hammer test and a couple of core checks in the intended footprint, confirmed the pour was consistent, and shimmed the bases to bring all four columns into level within manufacturer tolerance. Level matters more than people expect. A frame that sits out of level will bind the cables, wear one side of the sheaves faster than the other, and eventually trip the slack-cable safety at random. We spend real time on that step because it prevents most of the service calls we would otherwise be making a year later.

Loading Cars for Long-Term Storage

Storage is a different job than service, and the habits are different. Vehicles that sit for six months need their weight on the runways in a way that doesn’t distort tires and doesn’t put constant load on a single hydraulic circuit. On a four-post, the safety locks carry the load once you lower onto them, not the cylinder, so the correct procedure is always to raise past your working height and settle onto the nearest lock position. We tell every customer the same thing: if you can hear the locks click into place and see all four engaged, you are on steel. If you are floating on hydraulics, you are one seep away from a slow descent.

For his collection we set up a rotation. The car that goes up is the one that won’t move for the longest stretch, and it goes up on jack stands placed on the runways under the frame so the suspension hangs and the tires unload. Drip trays under the drivetrain keep the vehicle below clean. Battery tenders route through a cord reel on the ceiling rather than draped over a runway edge. And once a month he raises and lowers the empty setup through its full travel to keep the cylinder seals wet and the cables moving in the sheaves. Equipment that sits unused fails more often than equipment that gets cycled.

Inspection Prep: What the Lift Actually Changed

Annual state inspections vary by jurisdiction, but the failure list is remarkably consistent: brake condition, exhaust leaks and hanger integrity, steering and suspension play, tire condition, frame rust, and lighting. Five of those six are best judged from underneath with the wheels off the ground and the suspension unloaded. That is exactly what this equipment gives you, and it is the single biggest reason a collector benefits from one even if he never turns a wrench professionally.

His first inspection season with the lift went differently than the years before. He was able to put each vehicle up, spin every wheel by hand to feel for dragging pads, grab tie rods and check for play, run a light along the entire exhaust, and photograph the frame rails for his own records. He caught a cracked exhaust hanger and a torn CV boot before the shop did, fixed both himself in an afternoon, and passed all three inspections on the first visit. He also stopped hauling vehicles to a shop just to get them in the air, which was costing him a trailer trip and a favor every time. The First Service Call, Nine Months In

Nine months after install he called about a lift that stopped about three feet from the floor on the way down and refused to go further. That symptom sounds alarming and is almost always mundane: one lock had not fully retracted, so the carriage was resting on a lock dog on one column while the other three released. On a cable-equalized four-post, an air-actuated lock system that loses pressure on one cylinder will do exactly this. In his case a fitting on the rear column had backed off a quarter turn and was bleeding air.

We reseated the fitting, cycled the system a dozen times, and rechecked cable tension while we were in there. Cables stretch during the first year of use more than at any other point in their life, and equalizing them is routine first-year maintenance, not a defect. We also greased the sheave pins, checked the fluid level, and wiped the cylinder rod. Total visit was under two hours. That is the kind of call we would rather make than the one where somebody has a vehicle stuck in the air with a leaking cylinder and no idea what brand the equipment is, which happens more often than you would think. If you own a car lift and you can’t name the manufacturer or find the serial tag, take five minutes and photograph it now.
