Install day: what a first-time collector actually sees
Install day started at seven in the morning with a 26-foot box truck that could not make the last turn into a residential driveway. That is normal for a residential four-post install — we plan for it, and our crew brought a pallet jack and a set of straps to walk the crates the last 60 feet down the driveway. By nine the columns were staged, by eleven the runways were on, and by two in the afternoon the collector had rolled his first vehicle onto the deck and we were walking him through the safety lock sequence.
What the collector did not expect was how much the noise level changed once the pump was running. A hydraulic pack under load in an enclosed garage is loud in a way you do not appreciate from a YouTube video, and we typically recommend a rubber pad under the pump if the garage doubles as a listening space or a home office is anywhere nearby. Nothing on the piece was defective — that is just how these units run — and it settled into the background quickly once he got used to it. By the end of install day he had his first vehicle parked overhead, his second parked underneath, and the ceiling clearance he measured with a laser worked out to within an inch of what we quoted.
Choosing capacity and length for stacked storage
The most-overlooked spec on a residential four-post is length. Manufacturers publish a runway length and a max wheelbase, and those numbers can differ by 30 inches from one brand to the next on units that look identical from ten feet away. Our collector was storing a mid-1990s station wagon on top of a modern crossover, and the wagon’s wheelbase pushed us to a 187-inch runway instead of the standard 172-inch — which mattered when it came time to close his overhead door with both vehicles parked.
Capacity was the easier call. He was storing 4,500 pounds up top and 4,200 pounds below, so a 9,000-pound four-post from BendPak, Atlas, or the storage side of the Rotary line all penciled. We steered him toward a 9,000-pound piece with the extended length because he mentioned that his next purchase might be a longer Suburban-class vehicle, and building headroom into capacity is cheaper than trading up two years later. The trade-in market for used four-posts is real, but a collector who buys the right size the first time skips a full round of freight, install, and disposal costs — which typically add up to 20 percent of what the equipment cost in the first place.
Setting up for annual safety inspections above the lift
Iowa does not require an annual state safety inspection on personal vehicles, but a collector who ships cars to buyers in states that do — or who runs vintage vehicles that need periodic mechanical inspection — ends up with the same checklist as a shop. Brake pad thickness, exhaust leaks, ball joint play, and tie-rod wear are all easier to see from below with a vehicle up on runways than from a floor jack in a driveway. Our collector spent his first spring pulling each of his six vehicles up in rotation and running a 45-minute inspection on each one before the driving season.
Working on a four-post storage lift is slightly different from a shop four-post because the runways are not always drilled for jacking points. On the model he bought, we specced a rolling bridge jack that fits between the runways, and that jack made the difference between annual maintenance being possible and being frustrating. A collector who plans on doing more than eyeballing needs to budget for that bridge jack on day one — it is a mid-three to low-four figure accessory that pays for itself the first time you rotate tires on all four wheels without breaking a rib on the runway. Skipping it and improvising with a floor jack under a raised deck is not something we would ever recommend.
What broke in year one on a stored-vehicle car lift
Not much broke, and that is the honest answer we give first-time collectors. Over twelve months on a well-maintained storage hoist, the only real maintenance was topping off the hydraulic reservoir once at the six-month mark and greasing the slider blocks quarterly. The equalization cables held tension, the locks engaged clean every cycle, and the electrical held with no drama. Storage duty is generally easier on a hoist than shop duty because the piece spends most of its life either fully up on locks or fully down, with very few in-between cycles.
Where the collector did have a minor scare was in month four, when the emergency-lower valve stuck slightly on one of the safety locks. A five-minute call to us, a check on his part, and a light spray of the manufacturer-approved lubricant fixed it — no warranty claim, no downtime. That kind of small issue is what a good installer prevents from becoming a real problem. Our recommendation for any storage-duty owner is to run through a full up-and-down cycle at least once a month even when no vehicle is on the runways, just to keep the seals wet and the locks moving. Storage-only equipment that sits still for six months at a stretch is what develops seal leaks by year three.
Resale and trade-in value on quality four-posts
Four-post storage lifts hold their value better than almost any garage equipment we deal with — better than compressors, better than tire machines, and definitely better than lighting or shelving. A four-year-old BendPak, Atlas, or Rotary-branded four-post in central Iowa will trade for roughly two-thirds to eighty percent of its original delivered price if the equipment was installed clean and the paperwork is intact. That resale floor is what makes buying quality up front financially rational even for a collector who might sell in five years.
The trade-in side of the equation is where we occasionally take pieces on. When a customer is upgrading capacity or moving to a two-post for active service work, we will sometimes credit a used four-post against the new equipment and route the old piece to another buyer in our region. The paperwork the original installer generated on day one — anchor torque, slab spec, level readings — is what makes that trade smooth. Storage layout that pays off in year two
By the end of year one, the collector had reshuffled his garage three times, and the final layout was different from what he sketched before install. He had originally planned to keep the four-post on the north wall with a tool bench across from it, but the swing radius of the overhead door and the length of the loaded runways made the south wall a better fit. The lesson we take away from those conversations is that garage layout is not a spreadsheet problem — it is a physical one, and the best layout usually reveals itself after the equipment has been in the space for a few weeks.
The other layout decision that paid off was leaving a full lane between the passenger side of the four-post and the wall. Twenty-four inches sounds like a lot on a plan drawing, but with tool cabinets and the bridge jack in the mix, that gap eats down fast. Our recommendation for any collector planning a first install is to mask off the actual footprint of the lift plus a walkable perimeter on the concrete before pouring any anchors — and to leave that mask in place for at least a week of normal garage traffic. What looks fine on paper is often a squeeze in practice, and moving anchors after they are set is not a project anyone wants to run twice.
When to add a second car lift versus a bigger garage
Twelve months in, the collector is thinking about a second bay — but not a second lift in the same footprint. He is looking at a two-post next to the four-post for active service work rather than storage, which is a smart order to build the garage in. A four-post stores the fleet, and a two-post gets used for the actual wrenching once the collector is serious about doing his own maintenance. That combination handles roughly 90 percent of what he wants to do himself, and it defers a bigger garage build for another five years.
The alternative — a bigger garage instead of a second car lift — is the right answer for a collector who is genuinely running out of storage capacity rather than tool capacity.
