Myth: All Four Post Lifts Run on the Same Voltage

If your building only has single phase service and you order the wrong motor, you’re either paying for a phase converter or eating a re-order.

For an EV specialty shop doing brake service and rotor swaps on heavier vehicles all day, higher-capacity commercial models are usually the right call, and those are exactly the units most likely to come in three phase. Before you order anything, get your actual amperage and phase available at the panel from your electrician, then match the lift’s specific motor spec sheet against that number. Don’t assume based on what a shop down the street runs, because their building’s service and yours may not match at all.

Myth: EV Weight Doesn’t Change Your Lift Requirements

EVs are heavier than their gas counterparts because of battery pack weight, and that changes more than just capacity math. Weight distribution on EVs skews differently too, often more centered and lower, which is actually fine for a four post platform lift but still needs to be accounted for when you’re picking rated capacity. A shop that specs a lift based on gas sedan weights and then starts servicing EV sedans and crossovers can end up right at the edge of rated capacity instead of comfortably under it.

Even in a newer commercial building with plenty of overall service capacity, running a lift motor off a shared circuit with other shop equipment is asking for nuisance trips and voltage drop issues. Compressors, welders, and other high-draw equipment sharing a circuit with a lift motor can cause it to underperform or trip breakers mid-cycle, which is a bad time for a vehicle to be stuck between positions.

It’s a small added cost during construction and a genuinely serious problem to fix after drywall and finished floors are in.
